County Hurling Team 2020

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

That was some performance today from MLR.

They dominated from start to finish with their half back line in total control.

Just too many threats in the full forward line to deal with and Chris Nolan just doesn't miss even when marked tightly. Their midfield was excellent as well with Paul Coady very strong.

The distribution from the MLR backs into the forwards was very good unlike Ballinkillen who were living on scraps and couldn't get Seán Murphy into the game.

Diarmuid Byrne and Chris Nolan the best players in the championship and Eddie Byrne in the full forward line has
to start for the county.

For Ballinkillen David English, Craig Wall and Sean Whelan kept battling and with a young team they will be back stronger in future years.

Now onto the county, get James Doyle fit and we will be a match for anybody.

Was Ruairi Dunbar injured yesterday? Either that or the team sheets I saw on gaa.ie left him out.

Not the co final we expected yesterday goal after a minute threw ballinkille and rangers had it put to bed after ten minutes.

Ballinkillen tried hard but everything they done seemed to go against them so many short passes to hand that wasn't controlled 2 touches instead of 1 to control hopefully this is only start of there journey and not there end good young players in team that will be brought on and now that they know what it is to lose on big day will hopefully come back stronger.

Wanted to mention the performance of Denis Murphy and Chris Nolan really were unmarkable yesterday to be honest and the scored 2_13 between them some of the scores really where top class and fitting for a co final.

Hard to see anyone coming close to rangers in the next couple of years where convincing winners in every game this year. Not many teams in the country can leave 4 county standard players on the bench on a co.final day and still win comfortably.

Biggest pity is not getting to see them compete in Leinster this year would have fancied them to have a strong run and maybe add to the Leinster title from before that's the standard they are now at.

Anyways congratulations to all involved well deserved win. Would anyone bet against them doing the double now.

Congrats to MLR, by far the best team in the county and nobody even got close to them in any of the games they played. Obviously, certain lads will get the plaudits (and deservedly so), but I thought Paul Coady had an excellent campaign along with Tony Lawlor & Ted Joyce. Serious team who would have taken some stopping in Leinster. The standards been set now, everyone else knows what they need to do.

Disappointed for Ballinkillen, tough day, but they can still be proud of their campaign. In 2013 a young St Mullins team took a similar beating against MLR in the final, but came back the year later and won the county title. That's what Ballinkillen will have to look towards now. Hopefully this season is on the beginning of good things for the club.

Even though there wan't too many tight games this year, I still think it was a good Championship for Carlow hurling. Bagenalstown held their own, Ballinkillen getting to the final and MLR playing a standard of hurling very few teams in Carlow have reached. St Mullins will be back next year, hopefully fully fit and Myshall will take comfort in winning the Intermediate playing some fine hurling in the process.

Sean isn't in to the best of my knowledge. Missed most of the football championship with a cracked ankle so can't see him returning to anything until next year

What happens if Antrim can't field this weekend?

Probably a walkover for Westmeath. The problem would be will they be able to field a week later against us.

It's tough on everyone at the moment but I hope the games can still be played.

Very interesting weekend of results in the McDonagh. Antrim really laid down a marker, while Kerry won as expected against Meath.

I'm not as confident about Carlow's chances of winning the McDonagh as I was at the end of August. Nearly two months since a competitive hurling game is a big worry, especially against on form Antrim. A loss this weekend wouldn't be catastrophic, but would mean they need to win out to have any hope of making the final.

Having two games under their belt will mean Antrim have to be favourites going into the Carlow game. Antrim know a win on Saturday will essentially book them a place in the final, with Meath to come and Kerry at home. However having to travel 3/4 hours down for a game at 3 on a Saturday, in the current climate, is far from ideal preparation.

Westmeath are under big pressure already and a loss against Kerry will all but knock them out of contention.

I watched the Antrim Kerry league final and the Antrim Westmeath game on Sunday. Antrim have been very impressive in both games. I feel the three point margin in the league final flattered Kerry who got a soft goal from a free but it was a decent performance from Kerry all the same but they are reliant on Shane Conway.

Westmeath's performance against Antrim was one of the worst I've seen from a Westmeath team in years. Everything was off, touch, striking, speed etc. It wasn't a good sign for Westmeath when their 38 year old selector who retired 3 years ago started at full forward. I posted after the relegation final defeat that I felt Westmeath were not impressive and it was our own shortcomings at the time which resulted in relegation so Westmeath's decline might not be as big as it seems.

Westmeath had a new goalkeeper (from Dublin) who had a poor day and from the relegation game they were missing Darragh Egerton, Shane Clavin, Killian Doyle and Liam Varley. However Antrim were missing Neil McManus with injury and other players through COVID/injuries such as James McNaughton, Conal Cunning and Michael Bradley. Ciaran Clarke who was a sub against Kerry scored 2-08 at the weekend.

Antrim's half back line of Gerard Walsh, Paddy Burke and Joe Maskey are very strong and were hughly impressive against Westmeath. This will be a key battle on Saturday.

Antrim will be favourites but hopefully the break since the league will have energised the team and we can put in a performance.

Fair play for the summary of the Westmeath game! Interesting stuff.

Looking like Chris Nolan and James Doyle won't make it for Saturday either, which are two massive loses if that is the case.
