The problem is, we need to start trying to play that game. Everybody else is playing it and teams will snuff out hit and hope. The game v Wexford is absolutely crucial and I just made the same point over on the Wexford board. I guess this year has to be about new faces. I wouldn't be expecting anything much this year. I think he's a bye ball for the first year and is concentrating on finding new fellas, which in fairness he already has done. Donghue from Isles in half backs is best new Dublin senior I've seen for ten years. He's putting together a potentially excellent back unit build around Eoghan. Forwards have potential but will need a lot of luck to have the main men on the pitch at the same time. Given what i've heard of him from Galway, there are other lads on last chance. Some of them age be a factor but he won't carry anyone not willing to give 100%. I'd imagine that came up in his chat with EOD who may have issues with the lack of fight shown by others on certain days. I'd be happy with a third spot as optimum probably and even if not that at least giving the other three a good game and maybe beating one of them. I think that we can target that 3rd spot, especially having Wexford at home. I don't think Wexford are as good as 2-3 years ago and the Nell is a huge advantage. I still think we can beat anybody in the Nell and if we can go to Corrigan Park and get a win I give us every chance. Having 3 home games is massive and having 2 of them v Wexford and Galway is a huge advantage. Wexford having to go to Galway and us is a tougher route. I don't see us getting a result v Kilkenny but we should target winning all the other games. Galway don't like coming to the Nell either as they found out a few years back. Like you say Barney its year 1 of a rebuild but that 3rd spot is there to be got, and possibly more. ExiledInWex (Dublin) - Posts: 569 - 20/03/2023 13:26:07 2465155 Link 0 |
I'd definitely give them a chance against Wexford. Yesterday was tame enough and Laois already had their eyes on the Westmeath game so it was a pretty meaningless affair. Not even playing one another in championship. He obviously has some idea of his starting team next month and a lot will depend on injuries so hopefully be fielding with a full hand at the business end. Third place I'd say still the target. Anything after that be a good year. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 1088 - 20/03/2023 14:08:15 2465189 Link 0 |
Why target just 3rd place? In Leinster there's been no difference in points between 4th and 2nd in either of the last 2 round robins!

To be honest I can see Dublin beating yourselves - assuming we get through what will be a serious game up in Belfast - but i honestly don't see Dublin taking either Kilkenny or Galway. therefore a third spot qualifier place against one of the Munster teams be the optimum. Hope I'm wrong obviously.

If we can beat Kilkenny and draw with Galway like we did last year why can't you beat us like you did last year? And why can't you beat them if we can? It's definitely a mental issue with yourselves, especially against Kilkenny.

It's more than mental. Dublin teams were able to match the Cats - albeit in their declining period after 2010 in all aspects of play, but last few years not even close other than the mad comeback during the lockdown. Just too far off the pace, especially up front and backs have been taken apart for lack of first touch and often suicidal short game. I do think they have potential and i think MOD can get best out of them, but maybe this be a trial year more than anything. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 1088 - 21/03/2023 17:20:19 2465578 Link 0 |
I still don't get your hang up about the Cats. Just taking Championship games into consideration even. Since we lost by 1 point to them in 2018 in Nowlan Park we haven't lost to them in 70 minutes in 4 games since. 2 wins and 2 draws. Although they won in extra time after 1 of the draws in 2021. We beat them in the 2017 Championship also. In the same time period since we beat you in 2018 we drew with you in 2019 and lost at home in 2022. We haven't beaten you since 2018. So again I ask the question- why do you think you won't beat them if it's not a mental issue?

But why though? This is a good year to catch kilkenny. Leinster is odd though. We have a great record against kilkenny but can't seem to beat Galway while ye are the opposite, and there isn't much between us. Ideally I'd like to see the 3 leinster teams go through at Galways expense like 19. Crazy we won leinster that year by only beating laois to get to the final. Incidentally the fixtures were similar to this year. We've found a couple of new players this year so fancy us to get there with a full panel to pick from. That being said, parnell Park is a huge game for both and won't be easy. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 2046 - 21/03/2023 19:24:39 2465611 Link 0 |
