Galway V Clare

(Oldest Posts First)

Might as well get the ball rolling for this one -

I hear Honan has been advised to rest from hurling for 6 weeks so he wont be available. Here is my team:

1. Brennan - Leave him there. I would not blame his poor display against Tipp on him. He got no league games and was thrown in the deep end. Leave him now

Vaughan Dillion Cooney - This is imo the best full back line we have available

Donnellan Bugler Jim Mc - Strong powerful and good fielders which Galway dont have - Put Donnellan on Tannian

Nicky Conlon - Conlon seems to have more of an influence when played in midfield (when he has more space. Nicky certain for midfield)

I would play a 4 man center forward line with Cathal Mc and Clancy seeking the breaking ball and making runs behind the center forward line. Lynch needs to hold the center forward position and D Mc to float around him and fall back in midfield.

Conor Mc Grath and you pick from Ryan or Morey. I would like to give Morey a shot

Wud it be fair to say we know what we are going to get from Clare .... plenty of spirit and fight from the off, from a young team that are starting to find their feet after a couple of years in the wilderness... the imponderable is what we are going to get from Galway :-\

If Galway can pull out a performance like they were producing last year they will scrape through here with a couple of points to spare .. if they pull out a performance similar to their last two Leinster Championship games .. then this will be a stroll on the Salthill Prom for Clare ...

Hope its a good game and a fine day. (Salthill is a dreary place in the rain.)

ignore billy the clown from galway. I never take any pleasure in beating our neighbours. Been at your last 3 all irelands in 95 97 and 02 cheering on the banner. Hopefully galway can do it for the west now, although I wont be holding my breath!

Very disappointing from a Clare point of view, the game was effectively over after the first 15 minutes.
Our defence got cleaned out, although I thought that Cian Dillon had a good enough game.
Whatever chance we had of a comeback (or at least putting up a respectable showing) was destroyed when McInerney got the line. A completely reckless challenge.
Brennan was poor for the 2nd goal, but there wasn't much he could do about the other 3. In fairness to him he pulled off a great save at one stage.

Midfield was non-existent again. Nicky went back to play sweeper system but the Clare defence has no clue how to actually play this system. How many times was Nicky 1 on 1 with a forward when his role should have been to support any "other" defender who was 1 on 1 with a forward. Clancy once again was anonymous in midfield.

Up-front, Conlon, Lynch, McMahon & McInerney didn't make much headway.
Morey had a few good moves, while McGrath had another very good game. Had we been able to make any headway in half-forward line, then we could really have tested Galway's full-back line because they looked suspect here at times.

To be fair to Galway, they played with great intensity and looked much more settled. Their middle axis of Kavanagh/Regan/Burke-Smith/Farragher/Canning looks strong.
Damian Hayes is impossible to mark when he is on-form and gets good ball (although, his form can be a bit hit and miss).
In saying that Galway conceded 0-20 to a poor Clare team, and they have a few positions that will be well tested by better teams.
Corner backs looked in trouble at times, and Cullinane struggled big time when marking Fergal Lynch.
While Tannian was impressive, he did look very slow at times, and I remain to be convinced on Gantley & Kerins.

Best of luck to Galway for the remainder -any all-Ireland which crosses the Shannon is always to be welcomed.

Sparrow please leave as LohansRedHelmet has all the answers and he will know what has to be done, Joe Canning was pegging Clare players out over the stand in salthill the last day.
