Antrim hurling team 2011 vs. 89 team

(Oldest Posts First)

Which team was/is better anyone?
I started this thread as I believe the standard of the game has shot through the roof.
It seems to me that the present team of today if they were playing in 1989 would too have got to the all Ireland final as their skill, fitness and physicallity is so much better than the 1989 team.
I saw some clips of the 1989 final and the Tipp fowards got away with so much they wouldnt do that now.

89 team by a mile. yes the training aspect is changed now but the team in 89 had some of the best hurlers in Ireland. clute, beaver mc carry, the 2 donnelly brothers ciaran barr etc that defence was outstanding.

the team now doesnt compare. we have good defenders but lack good forwards. neil mc manus is the stand out forward in the county and we place too much on him to get all the scores.

89 team by a mile.

There is nothing to compare. 1989 team were a great team filled with some outstanding hurlers who knew how to hurl. They were big powerful men who for the size could move with great speed. Todays team wouldn't last five minutes with them. Dessie Donnelly, James and Danny McNaughton, Clute, Brian Donnelly, Humpy even Gary O'Kane then against the likes of todays pampered pets. 89 team to win by 25 points!
