U20 Championship

(Oldest Posts First)

I see the new U20 championship has turned into a bit of a farce already, 6 walkovers at the weekend, i think I counted 8 in the first two rounds of football. When you dont have county players, and everyone knows the group stages dont count for much, players treat it as a bit of joke! Either have all the county players included or go back to the system before with a back door system so teams are guaranteed two games!

At least then the matches were competitive, seems to be farce at the minute.

i can not understand the attitude of any player,at any level, who would just let their club hand a walk over.
is apathy really at that level in our clubs?do players care out the game any longer?
but i do think the c/b have a lot to answer for, cork hurling away on tg4 yesterday, and our team away in portugal.there should have been another round of club matches this weekend.the championship better justify this trip but to be fair,i think our clubs are sick to death of the setup

The county board is the clubs, so the book stops with the clubs if they are not happy put forward people who will chance things.

None of you have mentioned the actual real issues yet.

1. My club has 3 lads who are not playing anything until after the leaving cert. With most children now doing transition year, the 18/19 year olds will be the ones doing the leaving cert. College exams are also beginning to start in the next week or so. Its a busy time for students, most of whom fall within the under 20 category.
2. Under 21 used to allow clubs to pick from 21,20,19,18 and 17 year olds. So 5 age groups were eligible. Its only 4 age groups now. Basic maths will tell you that this reduces the numbers of players available to any club and therefore will lead to an increase in the number of walkovers.

The solution is simple..
1. Return to a championship of 5 age groups (16,17,18,19 and 20). Currently the 16 year old is the only player who can't play with an older age group, under 17 is their only option, they need to be allowed to play under 20.
2. Have no under 20 activity from the 15th of April until the end of the leaving cert.

Now we must remember that we lost 3 weekends earlier in the year because of unusual weather. This will not happen every year, so the problem is being exaggerated

Some good points made. I would actually move back to U21 and not include 16 year old but have it 17 to 21 year olds. But I would still go back to knockout with back door. The days of lads playing pointless games are over, its grand at underage level.

Also you are correct about not playing this late in the year due to leaving cert but in fairness with the weather it made it difficult to play earlier.

Hard luck to the lads. Performed the best of the 3 sides, much better than the minors or seniors. Two points from Ivan Meegan were absolute class. Pity the team were hamstrung by some of their best players being taken by the senior side.

unbelievabe score by meegan, good effort by the account of the supporters i heard yesterday.
it really is catch 22 for gaa, player burnout is an issue, players being pulled from 1 team to another is crucifying them.i dont think that they thought this one through though.
