Top 20 Carlow Footballers In The Last 50 Years

(Oldest Posts First)

I see an Irish Independent piece this week with their Top 20 footballers from each county in the last 50 years. Who would be our your Carlow list?

Carlovia. It seems like you've included a few players who only played a couple of years for the county.
Lots of the players you picked were totally committed to the Carlow cause.
Some on your list don't tick the right boxes

Would you not just come up with your own 20 ?

Thanks Carlovia for getting the ball rolling on this! Hard to think of 20 of the best going back all of those years.

I guess easiest way to do it is as a team.. have taken a few positional liberties, but this is the best team of Carlow players I have seen... I have only included one player from the 70s because Carlow was unbelievably bad in that decade... That was actually the nadir and when the rot set in... for reasons I won't get into right now... the best periods of the last 50 years were 84-88 (Harvey/Doyle), 95-97 (Miller), 04-05 (Dempsey/Hayes), 16-19 (O'Brien/Poacher)

2011 and 1999 stick out as good years, which petered out for different reasons.... I still think 1999 and the following years was the wasted opportunity, we had some VERY good players then... We also could have done better from 2003-05 if money had been put in at the time for a proper set up (like Leix and Westmeath had)... it's also clear we need the right man/men at the top to get things moving right... I'd have given Poacher any money he liked to stay on... sincerely.

Joe Broderick (Tinryland)

Andrew Corden (O'Hanrahan's)
Mark Brennan (Old Leighlin)
Conor Lawler (Palatine)

Cyril Hughes (Bagenalstown)
Sean Kavanagh (Rathvilly)
Jordan Morrissey (Eire Og)

Brendan Murphy (Rathvilly)
Tommy Dwyer (Tinryland)

Mark Carpenter (O'Hanrahan's)
Paddy Quirke (Naomh Eoin)
Johnny Nevin (Old Leighlin)

Paul Broderick (Tinryland)
Colm Hayden (Eire Og)
Anthony Keating (Eire Og)

A few honourable mentions to Willie Doyle, Lar Molloy, Linus Kearns, Noel Doyle, Kevin Madden, Willie Quinlan, Alan Bowe, John Brennan, Simon Rea, Willie Cullen, Brendan Hayden, Breffni Hannon, Sean Murphy, Sean Gannon and Shane Redmond.

I agree with you on the seventies and poacher. Ironically enough there's a strong connection between the 70s and current management but there the comparison ends. I don't like poacher but i do think he's the right man for the job and i hope county board try and get him back next year. Id be very concerned if we continue with present set up as it has gotten stale and the players will openly tell you this.
