Awards: Best Ladies Footballer

January 09, 2012

Meath's Fiona Mahon
The contenders are Irene Munnelly, Kellie Allen, Fiona Mahon, Katie O'Brien and Jenny Rispin.

The fortunes of Meath ladies football improved greatly under the guidance of Paula Cunningham. The Royal ladies seniors gained promotion to Div 1 of the league, contested the Division 2 final and reached the Leinster SFC decider beating All-Ireland champions Dublin on the way. We take a look at the five main contenders for this award.

What a year 2011 was for Irene Munnelly. The St. Ultans and Meath keeper was outstanding all year for club and county. Munnelly rounded of the year in great fashion picking up an All Star award for her efforts.

Kellie Allen captain Meath minors in 2011. The talented Oldcastle player broke into the Meath senior championship team for the first time and was crucial to Oldcastle's win in the Meath IFC and their progress in the Leinster competition. Kellie featured in these awards already.

Jenny Rispin has been one of Meath's best footballers for the past five years. The Summerhill player had a huge game against Dublin in the Leinster SFC semi final and always gives 100% to the Royal cause.

Like Rispin Katie O'Brien is one of Meath's most determined players. O'Brien captained St Ultans to their first Meath SFC title in six years in 2010 and was one of the main reasons for Meath's success last year.

Fiona Mahon had a terrific year for both club and county. Mahon was nominated for an All Star award. The talented attacker was one of the Royals leading scorers in league and championship. Seneschalstown regained the Meath SFC with a comfortable final day win over Na Fianna. Fiona was named player of the match. Her performance that evening in Ashbourne was from the top drawer. Mahon scored ten points in Seneschalstown's 1-20 to 2-5 win.
