Awards time: most medals won
December 14, 2011
Derek Doran had plenty to celebrate in 2011. Meath's best hurler celebrates with Tony Fox after scoring a goal in the Meath SHC Final.
It's that time of the year again when the curtain comes down on the club and county GAA scene.
We are always busy but some still have the time to sit around twiddling their thumbs, talking about the great games played, the great players, the great scores, the bad wides or the strange refereeing decisions.
It's also a great time of the year for awards to be dished out. Our team at hoganstand.com have come up with our list. It's only our opinion and a bit of fun so don't get too hung up about them. It will give us all something to talk about until the O'Byrne Cup kicks in.
First up is the
Award for Player who won the most medals in 2011.
There are a good few contenders for this one. The dual players from Ballivor and Kildalkey had a great year. Kildalkey won the senior hurling championship and league while Ballivor took Meath and Leinster Junior football honours. Star players like Tony Fox, Sean Heavy, Sean Corrigan, Noel Kirby, Padraig Geoghegan, and the Dorans, Mairtin and Derek, played leading roles for both.
Derek Doran wins this award. The talented attacker won a Kehoe Cup medal with Meath senior hurlers, an U21 B hurling championship, senior league and senior championship with Kildalkey along with junior football championship medals at county and provincial level with Ballivor. Throw in a Man of the Match award in the senior hurling final against O'Mahonys and the Meath Senior Hurler of the Year Award and you get some idea of how good this dual player really is.
Tomorrow we have a look at the
Best display in a Ladies final.
