Awards: Best Dual Player at Club Level
December 30, 2011
Dual star Mairtin Doran
The contenders for this award are Mairtin Doran, David Raleigh, Ger O'Neill, Stephen Donoghue, Shane Crosby and Noel Kirby.
The day of the dual player at intercounty level may be coming to an end but we are happy to report that the hurler turn footballer or is it the other way around is alive and well in the Royal County. We take a look at what we think were the best in 2011.
What a year it was for Noel Kirby. Already voted by us to be the best footballer in the junior championship this year, Noel has won county junior and Leinster football honours with Ballivor and a senior hurling championship and league medal with Kildalkey.
Mairtin Doran will go down in the history books for captaining Kildalkey for the past three years and on each occasion picking up the Jubilee Cup. Doran who was part of the Meath senior football panel a few years ago was one of the main players for Ballivor and Kildalkey in this year's championship.
David Raleigh had a very busy 2011. Raleigh was involved with the Meath seniors and is one of the best forwards on the club hurling scene plying his trade with Killyon. The talented dual star is a very accomplished defender for Ballivor.
Ger O'Neill had a graet year in the Meath senior hurling jersey. Was one of the best players on the field when Kilmessan were defeated by Kildalkey in extra time in the SHC semi final and for many years now has been one of Dunsany's best forwards.
Stephen Donoghue raised the Mattie McDonnell Cup for Moynalvey and played a captains part for the club the whole year. A brilliant hurler for club and county, Donoghue was a massive loss to Kiltale in the last ten minutes of their semi final clash with O'Mahony's.
Shane Crosby played a leading role in O'Mahony's march to the senior hurling final and was captain of the junior footballers that lost to Ballivor in the championship decider. Crosby went on to star in the club's win over St Pats in the Div FL final.
Our award goes to Mairtin Doran.
On Monday we pick our Club Grounds of the Year.
