Awards: Best Intermediate Club Footballer

January 03, 2012

Gaeil Colmcille's Philly Ward makes a fine catch ahead of Moynalvey's Padraic Harnan during the Meath IFC final at Pairc Tailteann.
Contenders for this award are Philly Ward, John Donoghue, Darren Fay, Michael Hickey, Benji Smith and Michael Foley.

John Donoghue was immense for Moynalvey all through 2011. The team captain led by example and was one of the driving forces behind his side's march to Intermediate glory.

The Gaeil Colmcille club had a great 2011. Narrowly beaten by Moynalvey in the IFC decider at Pairc Tailteann, Jody Devine's charges came good to claim the Division 3 League title. Philly Ward was outstanding for the Kells' men all year and was rewarded with a call up to the Meath senior squad for the Fitzsimons Cup competition.

Darren Fay raises a few eye brows when he transfered from Trim to neighbours Dunderry at the beginning of 2011. The switch of clubs did the former All Star no harm and his displays for the Dunderry club all through the year were one of the main reasons for their march to the semi-final of the IFC.

Former Leitrim footballer Michael Foley proved a great addition to the Na Fianna Club. Foley was one of the main reasons for Na Fianna's tally of 5-44 in the group stages of the championship and with the likes of Jamie Queeney and Ollie Lewis in their ranks, they must be the favourites for this year's title.

Over the past ten year Michael Hickey has proved to be one of the best midfielders at intermediate club level. Hickey's efforts were rewarded when the club claimed the Division 2 league title with a brilliant win over Oldcastle at Carlanstown. Hickey was the best player on view that day.

Benji Smith has been one of the most under rated defenders on the Meath club scene for the past five years. Day in day out Smith has been Ballinlough's best player. The North Meath men reached the semi-final only to loose out to neighbours Gaeil Colmcille.

Our award goes to Gaeil Colmcille's Philly Ward.

Tomorrow we pick our best minor hurler.
