Awards: Best combination of referee and player

January 05, 2012

Boardsmill keeper and referee Stephen Masterson
The contenders for this one are Conor Ferguson, Paddy Foy, Stephen Masterson, Ciaran Flynn, Rory O'Connor and David Gough.

An unusual award this one. Hard to believe that there are still some hardy souls playing and training with their clubs but also have the time and know how to referee a game.

Conor Ferguson has become one of the top hurling referee's in the county. The Gaeil Colmcille clubman took charge of the 2011 IHC final between Boardsmill and Rathmolyon. Kells defeated Clann Na Gael to take the Meath JHC 2 title at Pairc Tailteann. Conor lined out at midfield as Gaeil Colmcille claimed the title on a 2-10 to 0-11 scoreline. When not refereeing and playing Conor also finds the time to manage various teams at the club.

Former St Pats College keeper Ciaran Flynn togged out for Seneschalstown during 2011 and was the man in the middle for numerous games in the Royal County. A regular linesman at Pairc Tailteann, Ciaran also finds the time to take charge of the scoreboard at Meath headquarters.

Rory O'Connor was one of the leading scorers for Carnaross throughout 2011. O'Connor also found the time to take charge of underage matches and finals during the year.

Clann Na Gael lost out to Gaeil Colmcille in the Junior 2 HC final at Pairc Tailteann. In goals throughout that campaign for the Athboy club was Paddy Foy. Foy has been a regular referee of hurling matches in Meath these past few years.

Stephen Masterson had a very successful year. When Boardsmill defeated Rathmolyon to win the Meath IHC title, Masterson was one of the key men to this victory. Stephen plays in goals with his club and took charge of numerous hurling match's throughout the county in 2011. He also looks after the Boardsmill pitch. The grounds are always in pristine condition on match day.

One of the best up and coming referee's in the country at the moment is Slane's David Gough. David only took up refereeing in 2008. In early 2011 he took charge of his first intercounty game, an O'Byrne Cup match and has also been the man in the middle for the SFC final replay between Summerhill and Dunshaughlin. David took charge of the 2010 IFC final between Nobber and Carnaross. When not controlling the game David is a very talented defender with his club.
