Absolutely shocking. A co-ordinated campaign from ex-Kerry players in the media seeking to smear the ref in question. It was shameful stuff at the time and very distasteful. Very much an attempt to win at any costs including attempting to damage the character of a man who has committed most of his life to the sport.

Oh, I had not realised that sometimes it is OK to have a referee removed. I stupidly thought there was some kind of principle involved. Aibrean (Kerry) - Posts: 366 - 18/07/2023 15:42:25 2495440 Link 1 |

Would it elicit any comment from Dublin fans if an Abbeyfeale referee working and living in Tralee was proposed to referee a Dublin/Kerry AIF ? Simple enough question. Aibrean (Kerry) - Posts: 366 - 18/07/2023 15:47:44 2495442 Link 1 |

I'd say half the workforce in Dublin, and living in Dublin, are from the country and do you think these heads are all cheering for Dublin? Gough is a staunch Meath man, steeped in Meath GAA. He's about as likely to favour Dublin as Tomás O Sé is. It was a shameful character assassination of the man, from Quirke and Fitzmaurice in particular. A dark episode in the run up to the game. It undoubtedly influenced the appointment of Conor Lane for the replay.

Firstly, what about my question? Secondly, was the Kerry ref, replaced at Dublin's insistence, not subject to a 'shameful character assignation' and a 'dark episode' ? Thirdly, same ref can't do replay. Aibrean (Kerry) - Posts: 366 - 18/07/2023 16:53:42 2495471 Link 1 |

Can you list out the grounds on which Dublin objected and the grounds on which Kerry objected? I was referring to the fact that a Munster ref was appointed for the replay to keep the Kerry hounds in the media at bay. Their vitriol clearly influenced the decision. I would say that allowing such remarks in the first place is a really poor reflection on the HS Mods. Either they haven't seen these remarks, are ignoring them or have no problem with and fully agree with them. Which is it HD Mods?

I take it you are not going to answer my question? And I naively thought it a 'simple enough' question. I don't recall Kerry objecting to anything; can't say the same for Dublin. Can you name a 'Kerry hound' in the media? Aibrean (Kerry) - Posts: 366 - 18/07/2023 21:55:08 2495515 Link 1 |

And let's not forget Pat Spillane putting pressure on the Gaa to ban Dermot Connolly with his fake "outrage" of the "assault" on the ref which got Connolly a 12 week ban and ultimately was an early career ender for one of the best footballers to ever play the game. I doubt it if the ref was steeped in Limerick GAA and was working in Kerry. I think a more accurate comparison from you would have been a top national referee from Cork steeped in Cork GAA, a member of Nemo Rangers, as Gough is with Slane, and living in Kerry. Do you think that Dublin would object to that and have the press mafia sully him in the papers? That's what Kerry did to Gough. Now perhaps you could answer my question regarding why Kerry objected and why Dublin objected. Who do you think had a strong case and who didn't?

Joxer why all this negativity. The fact is though Dublin did object to a Kerry ref and he was removed as he was a member of same club as the Laois manager Liam Kearns (who sadly died this year). A few ex Kerry players objected to Gough becausr he was a member of St Judes gaa club the same club as Kevin McMenamin. In 2016 Dubs bt Kerry by 2 pts in semi but Dubs last point came from a bad challenge by the same Kevin Mac which should have been a free in to Kerry to equalise thus meaning the fame would have gone to a replay. David Gough admitted publicly afterwards he missed it and should have given Kerry the free to equalise. Now these are facts. However for what's its worth I thought Dublin were wrong in their objection and some of the objection by ex Kerry players was wrong also. Both were wrong. Also a poster hinted Pat Spillane caused Connolly s early retirement. Well Spillane was a pundit and not on the cccc and Connolly (who was a class footballer nó doubt) won 3 more all ireland medals after that so an incorrect statement. I can't see why a minority of posters gave to turn this into a constant diiging match. Let's just enjoy the build up and hopefully these two teams will give everyone plenty of enjoyment again. Both Dublin and Kerry have a great shared history and yes there have been wrongs on both sides but there s a huge respect also especially among ex players. I always think it s wrong and harsh to compare eras as times were different and players have better training duets now etc but in this era in the final we will have some of the greatest players on he pitch from this era..In years to come when people talk of James Mccarthy David Clifford Brian Fenton and Stephen Cluxton we will realise how lucky we are. They are banes that will never be forgotten in the gaa football world. Let's embrace and enjoy and best of luck to both teams in the final.

Great post. However I think the issues being brought up more and more are through concern. Kerry have and had a very high representation in the media, good luck to them as it's a good role to get. We are talking about amateur sport here, those managing the games are obviously going to find it difficult to steer clear of the noise, be that those making venue choices, appointments or in game decisions etc. To be fair Dublin and Tyrone in particular appear to be catching on with good media representation themselves. It doesn't win All Ireland's, in an amateur world though managing the media does indirectly help and does result in some influence in my opinion, the type of influence that can just help in the closing stages of a game. The reason it is being discussed more now in my opinion is other counties also have the influence and are calling out what has been indirectly happening for years. sam1884 (UK) - Posts: 999 - 19/07/2023 14:46:09 2495656 Link 2 |

Yes indeed Kerry have had a high rep in the media as do Dublin and Kilkenny in hurling. That's what happens with successful teams and counties and in a way unfair on other counties. I was delighted to see David Tubridy of Clare get a role of pundit this year. Im just not find of this over and vack sniping at each other and Yes I've been guilty of it too. There are alot of brilliant posters on this forum and clever too but sometimes it takes a nasty spin. I mean we give out about youths straying trouble in the Hill and yet we squabbling like kids ourselves at times. Are we becoming like soccer fans which brings me to another topic. I must admit I find some posters can be very condescending of Ulster posters and questioning their Irish identity. Most of those posters from Ulster have more Irish Ness in them than alot of us down here who will fawn over English soccer teams more so than our gaa heroes. Of course we are all human and debate is healthy and of course we all go overboard at times but look at posters like Lockjaw Realdub Green and red Mesamis etc who give their view with no real nastiness etc. Now forgive me for missing loads and the majority are fine posters.

To be fair, I'd like to see Lee Keegan, Tomas O Shea and Enda Mc Ginley together.
