All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship 2023

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Its quite unbelievable that the Limerick team named to start is the exact same team that started the 2021 All Ireland final, 14 of the team that started in 2020 and 12 that started in 2018. Their squad has most definitely improved every year but it just shows the level every single one of these are at - you'd imagine a few would have slipped a little at this stage. Tough on anyone trying to break into the team.

Galway in comparison have 5 from their 2018 team and Tipp will likely have 5-6 from their 2019 team and Kilkenny will be similar.

I'd imagine those numbers are unheard of for any successful team in any sport. The hope for the rest of us is that a lot of these may finish together - albeit thats not for a good while yet - unfortunately!!

For me he's arguably the best hurler in the country. Tipp as much as anyone play 15 players in their natural positions (not completely but close to it)
Davy is the one that no one expects to do that so I'm not sure how people think he will pin Nash back. He has shown nothing in 10 years to suggest he will do that. If he plays any kind of that crazy game he played with Wexford where full backs can appear at the other end of the pitch then they're doing it against the wrong team in Limerick. I've tipped Waterford to get out of Munster but for the life of me I can't see them winning this weekend. If they went 15 on 15 I'd give them a better chance than some mad tactic Davy is going to come up with - which might cause problems for other teams but not Limerick who hold their positions in backs and midfield so well."
I agree with you entirely don't let them dictate terms push up on them mark whose nearest to you whatever make them go long fight for puckout and most of all move it out of the middle 3rd as soon as possible play the wings.

Waterford on there day can be a swashbuckling team so please don't overburden them with tactics and we might have a classic in the open spaces of Thurles.

Hopefully a feast of hurling this weekend

Replying To Shocs07:  "Hard to follow that. This idea of saving players for the other 3 matches is a bit bonkers if it turns out to be true. Firstly Limerick aren't unbeatable, secondly it's the Munster championship, and thirdly, expecting easier matches against the other 3 is hardly lightly either. I hope for Waterford's sake that every game is treated as a final"
100%. If any of the Munster teams go out with that attitude then they wont go anywhere.
All the other 4 managers are arrogant and thick enough to think they can beat Limerick so I dont see this happening. Not showing your hand in the first round? No chance - that kind of BS is gone since the league finished

I've gone for Dublin over Antrim in the prediction competition but looking at their starting 15 theres a number of names not there that really gives Antrim a huge chance in this one. I'd change my prediction if I could but I'll be certainly throwing Antrim into my accumulator this weekend along with Limerick (U20), Laois and Westemath (+18) and Wexford +6)

Replying To ExiledInWex:  "If he loses, it'll be "he was holding back". We heard this for years with Davy in Wexford "he's hiding something" only for it to be discovered that he was hiding nothing.
The best teams go out to win every game, every day.
What could Davy possibly "hide" that Paul Kinnerk wouldn't know if they meet in an All-Ireland or Munster Final? Nothing. And even if he did keep something in reserve, I don't think Davy's cunning plans keep any opponent awake at night.
Otherwise, Waterford will be lambs to the slaughter on Sunday and that can be far more damaging than anything he is hiding."
I'm not saying his tricks are always great. Or that he will pick a weaker team. He will go with his strongest team and try to win the game. Its what he did when he was down here too. Even in Walsh Cup games. I'm just saying he will have a few different little ideas, that may or may not be effective in a real game, that he won't use on Sunday.

Their age profile is only now coming into their peak for the vast majority of that team. There were at least 3 calls that were extremely close I've been told. Kiely has gone with an extremely strong team that have a huge knowledge of playing with each other.

Thats their strongest team Tiobraid. Some would argue some of those lads should've been on the Dublin team before this year.

All I am saying it would be ludicrous to play any player with a slight injury because of the games coming fast. Your probably not going to beat Limerick with any selection of the 25 panel but can do serious damage of beating anyone else. That does not mean you are not going to try with whoever goes out. Davy is not the messiah or a tablet of miracles up his sleeve but just another mercenary passing through. It is up to the players if good enough to stand up. Unfortunately we have some great players but not enough. Not against this Limerick team anyway. Maybe in an other era we would get across the line.

Davy has kind of showed his hand by the selection. Not the way I thought this would be played. None of the two young Fitzgeralds starting, Patrick or Paudie. One think for sure the forwards are not going to play as named. Maybe Bennett.

Exactly. A big part of it is the age profile of the team. The 2018 winners were a very young team in the main, many of whom are only in their supposed prime years now.
2018 wasn't a team that had been knocking on the door for years before finally getting over the line. It was a fresh young team, aside from a few older heads.

I thought the Limerick game last year took too much out of Waterford. They were determined to knock them off their pedestals, put it up to them really well but fell short. It was their best championship performance and it was all downhill after that. I think it militated against them in the other games....had they put as much focus on the Tipp, Clare, and Cork games I think they may have won 2 of them and qualified in the top 3

That's a formidable Limerick line-out for Sunday. Even the subs bench looks a bit scary for any opposition. It's hard to see Limerick lose but if Waterford play as they are capable of, and are not constrained by any silly tactics, we could have a cracker of a game. The game in Ennis is more difficult to call. Despite their disappointing league campaign, I think Clare could have a big say in this year's championship. They might not have reached their peak by Sunday but even if they lose I would expect them to improve from game to game and to get out of Munster. Tipp had a decent league but they will find it very difficult to win on Sunday. If they lose it's hard to see them qualifying, as I don't think they would have the same scope for improvement as Clare.

They were poor against Cork and absolutely terrible against Clares 2nd 15. Management has a lot to answer for for that.

And that's why Im saying they tried too hard against Limerick and should have focused more and kept something back for the Cork, Tipp, and Clare games. It was foolhardy last year to go all out to beat Limerick in Munster because last year (just like this year), there is only a possibility of beating Limerick once and if you are going to beat them you want it to be in a knock out game.

How can you try too hard in a championship match of hurling? I just have no idea what that means. Waterford didn't collapse because they performed hugely well in the Gaelic Grounds last year. They collapsed because there was clearly a spilt between the players and management. It was internal so we wouldn't know what exactly happened. The performance in ennis had nothing to do with the effort in Limerick weeks before. That was a collective lack of cohesion and desire that had clearly surfaced within the group.

That's nonsense. The Clare game was 4 weeks after the Limerick game.

Certainly you cannot ever try too hard in a KNOCK OUT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH but the bit you're not taking into account is that the provincial championships are now a LEAGUE and sometimes it can pay to pace yourself and target the matches that are MUST WIN ones!

Munster teams dont have the same luxury as leinster countys in that regard. It's knockout esp 1st 2 rounds of round Robin . You don't pick and choose

Nah, it's not a question of luxury...it's about being smart! I'll put it this way.....is there any team in Munster capable of beating Limerick TWICE in this year's championship? I don't think so (and I dont think there's many who would think that!). The most important thing for Waterford is to avoid a hammering. It's not at all a question of throwing in the towel , but if the game is going against them not to fret over it. After that they can move onto their must-win games against the other Munster teams, which will be must-win games for their opponents too.
