Replying To Viking66:  "Noone is trying to belittle Waterford. Fact is they are the least successful of the so called top tier counties. And I'd be guessing no hurling supporter would begrudge them an AI either."
Viking I am no fool. People on here talk from both sides of their mouths when it comes to Waterford. We are singled out by some for what they perceive as simulation even when receiving accidental or deliberate hits to the head. Now the latest one on here suggests that a blatant trip should be ignored because he is a Waterford player. The biggest joke of all is saying we were liked when Mullane, Ken and Dan played. Both Ken and John were called dirty players. Dan booed for no reason. The vitriol was ten times worse then. People are entitled to their opinions but at least be honest enough not to try and cloak them.
With regards the reasons for the make up of the Leinster championship. Galway left Munster because they could not win a game never mind the tittle. When we were the fifth best team we would beat them by a cricket score. Thankfully they are now a hurling force or the Leinster championship would be a sad affair. Like in the past when the only chance was Wexford or for a while Offaly to challenge Kilkenny. Hopefully Wexford can make it at least a three horse race this year. The Leinster championship has always produced good games but the competitiveness for a winner has not been there.

Leinster needs more counties to step up like Laois, Offaly, Westmeath, Carlow and Kildare. Leinster counties. Galway could then join Munster. Would make alot more sense geographically. Salthill was an almighty trek a fortnight ago with 4 children.
As regards discipline I wouldn't say Waterford would be better or worse than anyone else tbh.

I thought about bringing my sons to the Wexford Galway match in Galway and decided against it when I saw the road to Galway and how far it was"
That's simply not true, Limerick fans have always travelled in huge numbers through decades of barren years, in fact in the 90s the numbers may have been bigger than they are now.
You make a valid point about travelling with kids but will they even turn up in big numbers for the home games.

Dropped in to see what's going on.
Limerick have the same 10k supporters that every other county and anything beyond that is indeed a bandwagon.
Every county has a bandwagon, and if success goes on for a few years people can easily forget this fact.
I remember going to Wexford matches with my da in the noughties and there wasn't 8-10k Wexford people at half of them, then in 2017 when they got to a Leinster Final every Tom Dick and Harry in the county started going and 70k went to a Leinster final that year.
19,168 at the 2017 Munster Semi Final between Limerick and Clare. Semple Stadium. What happened?
I am not critical of anyone, just pointing out that no county is immune from the bandwagon despite nonsense like "Cork bring great colour" or "Wexford bring great support" spouted when these teams get a sniff of winning something.

In the 90's there was a huge following at away games in the NHL. I recall going to Wexford in the NHL early 97 and sitting with a group of Limerick fans who couldn't get tickets for the All-Ireland final the September previously. I think seeing Ciaran Carey's swashbuckling brilliance and mister reliable Gary Kirby were what drew many followers. In the 1980's it was a more hard core who travelled but still great fans. Possibly the best Limerick team prior to 2018 too. We saw Tommy Quaid (RIP) playing outfield against Kilkenny away around 1985. Games always seemed to be a huge occasion - lads packed into vans, cars, trucks if needed.

The great thing I've always found about our fans is genuine affection for Limerick. When people talk about hurling there is a genuine love for Limerick hurling. It has just always been part of the fabric of life in Limerick. I have only met one real bandwagoner in my whole life. I worked in Shannon in 1996 and a Limerick rugby head who was at no games all year/(decade?) got 2 tickets for the all Ireland final. He thought he was a legend, but was fairly brought back down to earth by Clare coworkers who told him he should be ashamed of himself and should give his tickets to the likes of 'the young fella' as they pointed at me.

A lot of people go for the podcasts etc but I'd honestly prefer to chat with & listen to fellow Limerick fans than anyone who podcasts. Far more honest opinions & not trying to sell a product.

Agree completely I remember an important league game between Limerick and Wexford in GG in 2014 as both were going for promotion from 1B and 2,800 was the attendance, was a double with the football teams from the 2 counties too. Cork are the 1 county with a consistent strong following but I think that's due to population, before someone mentions Dublin that's a different matter as in reality hurling is a non-entity to an awful lot in the capital.

No Cork do not have a consistent strong following.. There was 26,000 at a Munster Championship match between Limerick and Cork in '96, in Pairc Ui Caoimh. If there was 6, 000 at it from Cork, it was a lot.
In 2009, I think it was 2009- it may have been 2010, Limerick and Cork played a Munster Football Final in Pairc UI Caoimh. Despite both teams going well at that time and Cork only winning narrowly, there was only 9,000 people in total at the game.

That era was truly amazing time and even back to the early seventies, with the 20,000 attendance mark regularly surpassed for ordinary League games. There was also huge at almost every Championship match the three in a row under 21 team played.

Example 1 is 27 years ago in fairness, example 2 is a different code, Cork's support in football is brutal unless there playing in Killarney or make the AI final.

Cork Footballers definitely don't have consistent following but I think it's fair to say that the Hurlers have a massive following, particularly with the lack of success over the last 15 years or so. There is between 35,000 to 40,000 expected to go to to the Cork Tipp game on Saturday night.

Parnell is full for any Dublin hurling match in championship against any of the main contenders and usually demand well exceeds supply, and is often full for league games against the big teams. But, probably around 6,000 be core support, as will be proven again tomorrow with no more than 2,000 Wexford supporters and very neutrals added to what will be dismal turnout in CP.

(The only ones complaining about the Dublin hurlers in Croker are Dubs supporters, ironically,,,,)

Maybe the Dublin manager wants to prepare the team for playing on bigger and better surfaces e.g CP or Thurles where hurling will be the determining factor.

That's probably one of the reasons for the decision but I would have thought our priority this year had to be getting out of Leinster. Having three home matches in Parnell Park, including the must-win Wexford match would have given us a fair shout of third place but it doesn't seem likely now. I'm sure Micheál Donoghue knows it'll take a few years to get Dublin up to the level of being able to challenge for the All-Ireland QFs/SFs though so perhaps he is just planning for the long term.

Wishful thinking there Viking. Apart from Offaly I can't see any of the other counties reaching the standard that's required to compete with KK on a regular basis. As for Galway joining Munster again, thanks but no thanks! Isn't Munster already too competitive!
Galway were allowed into Munster at a time when club hurling was the only thing that mattered to the Galway hurler, most of them had no interest in playing for the county and as for the idea of a Connacht team winning a Munster title that would never be allowed in Munster nor would Galway have much interest in it either.
Galway, a Connacht team, were asked to play in a province where there was fierce rivalry and a long history of inter-county hurling. Galway came in cold from the cold into a knock out competition in which all games were played in Munster under Munster rules and referees. It wasn't Munster's or Galway's fault that it didn't work, it made no sense. Unfortunately the top brass in the GAA are not known for thinking outside the box.

The reason Galway were invited into Leinster was due to the fact that Brian Cody's team had won 10 or more Leinster titles in a row and he needed to sharpen his players to compete with the likes of Cork and Tipp. I can understand why most Leinster counties weren't happy with that arrangement. When it comes to hurling Galway people would prefer to compete in a non-provincial competition. Calling it the Leinster Championship, as has been said many times is a misnomer.

Then we have Antrim who have been ploughing a lone furrow for many a year, showered with platitudes and plámás but treated abominably. People complained, rightly so, that the Limerick v Clare match was only available on GAAGO but the Antrim v Dublin match wasn't even on GAAGO!
If it's provincial then let it be provincial, get rid of the Walsh cups and other minor competitions, bring back the historical Munster and Leinster knock-out competitions and devise another competition that accommodates Galway and Antrim, a competition that's fair to all hurling counties.

He seems to have more faith in the Dublin hurlers than most of their supporters! Time will tell if it was the right call.

What I mean with the population of the county overall, yes from experience the core Dublin hurling following are as fanatical as anyone.
