Replying To Oldtourman:  "Sorry now but Waterford met Tipp in the League, Munster and Oireachtas Finals in63 and beat them fair and square in all three. They also hurled them off the field in 59. In fact as Tipp only struggled past both Dublin And Wexford in ,61 and we're heavily beaten by an ageing Wexford team in 60, the back door system might have worked against them as well.
BTW the subcaption in JD Hickey 's (himself a Tipp man) report, in the Independent, the next morning after the 60 Final, was absolutely memorable. It said ' The Assyrian swept down like a wolf on the fold and the colors of his cohorts were a gleaming Purple and Gold,'"
Robbed so we were in 1961. My father and his brothers - one of whom had played for Dublin prior to '61 - didn't speak to their Tipp da, my grandad, for a few days. He = who had also played for Dublin in 1920s, just sat smirking over his pipe.

Little has changed ....

Replying To midlands:  "Fair enough, Daveboy, but I can't really recall any bad hits in those games. Jackie Tyrrell got away with a hefty frontal charge on Callinan in 09 that deserved a yellow card but the ref Kirwan didn't even give a free! Mick Fennelly made a big hit on Shane McGrath in 11 but it was perfectly legitimate, even by today's standards. The only big hit I can remember Tipp dishing out was in the League final in 09 - Callinan on Brian Hogan. Two big men but Callinan had the advantage and Hogan didn't see it coming. Maybe that's why Tyrrell nailed Callinan later that year! You're right, they were incredible games, although the 11 final wasn't as exciting as the other two as KK always looked like winners. The best final of all, I think, came three years later - the drawn 04 final. That game had everything, including last minute drama."
That 14 final was incredible. I was at it as a neutral. I've been to an awful lot of finals and that was one I left genuinely rattled with nerves and I was a Limerick man. Limerick left the semi final after them v kk that year in a rainstorm which again was some game considering the conditions. That was some year for Hurling. Right up there with that famous weekend un 2018 with 2 great semi finals that year also

Replying To daveboy:  "Ive tried several times Larry to explain this to you over the last few years. At this stage we will just agree to disagree. You call it deflection, whataboutery. Its the furthest thing from what I'm actually trying to say. I welcome openly the physicality the likes of hayes Flanagan hegarty gillane bring. I embrace it. Within that physicality and modern media you will get flash points where they go over the top and its highlighted. You call it thuggish. It's about physically and mentally dominating the opposition before during and after the match. Its what makes a dynasty. If you want to talk about thuggish behaviour just go and watch any decent standard hurling match anywhere in the country and you'll find it easy enough. Hegsrty will go down in time as one of if not the greatest wing forwards of all time. Unstoppable. Unmarkable. They'll say he played on the edge and will be celebrated for it. You don't like it Larry. That's your cross to bear. Gearoid will just go out the next day and hurl the same way collecting an odd medal/award on the way"
There is a difference between physicality and thuggish behaviour. Gillane, Hayes, Hegarty and now Flanagan have all committed what i would call dirty offences in the last two years, the majority of which they have gotten away with on the day.
My point is that this type of 'physicality' or 'mentality' that you are defending is not the stuff of leaders or any winning mentality designed to dominate opposition they are purely cheap shots which are a blight on the Limerick team and have the potential to seriously harm their chances of retaining the All Ireland if not addressed.
The real winning mentality was shown by the likes of Tom Morrissey and Barry Nash in the game - Tom smiled back at a Waterford player who was trying to rise him and struck the point immediately after the sending off.
Barry flirted on the edge but held his hands up for hitting Bennett on the head and again struck one of the winning points when reduced to 14.
Hegarty is an amazing hurler, gifted, but is beginning to fall into the Liam Dunne bracket you quoted earlier.

Perhaps you know FA about hurling. There's been plenty of 'small little short' fellas, past and present, who could/can hold their own, and more against the 'big boys.
The Young Hurler of the Year for 2022 was Mikey Butler (Kilkenny). This 'small little short fella' stands 5' 6" high, but he rarely gets 'blown out of it by the big boys'."
I didn't say that all small short fellas couldn't hurl or that they'd be blown out of it by the big lads, just the Larry comes across as one, such is the persistent beating of his drum about Hegarty, even wanting the man dropped. Ludicrous suggestion! Au contraire when it comes to small hurlers. The great Fan Larkin was one of my all-time favorite players. I used to love when he used to blow Ray Cummins right out of it.

Please try to read comments in the context of which they were written, and not go and just apply them to all and every situation.

Well if you know the man, you might be able to tell us all if he was a "small little short fella who got blown out of it by the big boys", as I suspect!

And btw, All-Ireland medals in Scor figure dancing don't count! I wonder did anyone ever get sent of there for lifting their knees too high? The do-gooders/PC crowd would probably want that though!

Replying To foreveryoung:  "If Hegarty's shoulder was as bad as you are attempting to paint it, then why wasn't he issued with a straight red card by the ref? Because it was an offense that merited a yellow card, no more no less. So, please stop your nonsensical posts!

My own take, from a pure hurling perspective from someone who played the game as to why Flanagans shoulder was not a mis-timed tackle, it was a cheap shot -

Any hurler knows that when you are striking a ball you are defenceless. Your eyes are focused on hitting the ball and your body is opened up to strike. Anyone who has played the game knows that when you hit someone as they strike they are not prepared for it or in a position to defend themselves. The manner Flanagan hit Bennett is not manly or physical its taking a shot at a player who you know is not prepared for it. Its bad enough levelling a lad on the shoulder and sending him on his backside but to hit him on the jaw and then raise the elbow makes it worse. He didn't attempt to hook or block, he just saw his opportunity and took it - he deserves his ban on the back of it.

Hegarty done the exact same except with more pace so we don't actually know where he caught the waterford man.

It's like hitting a lad on the hand in an 'attempt' to block him down - realistically your hurl is about two feet away from where it should be to block a player down but you can make it look like an honest attempt if you go in hard and there is a decent clash.

Both type of tackles while making it look 'honest' are inherently dirty and seasoned hurlers know exactly what they are at.

I've never mentioned Liam dunne. He was a leader. Powerful hurler. I'm not defending what Gearoid did. I had said it was oll disciplined and ill judged. He will not look back favorably on it. After playing the game at a high enough level I sort of have a feeling what makes some of these guys be the best in the game. Also having played the game I find it offensive to call any celebrated inter County hurler a thug or coward. Any proper ex player with credibility would not use those words for lads who give it all in an amateur game. You can question some of the challenges they make but that language stinks of bitterness. Its sad language to use in my opinion.

I have never once seen you comment on any other county player that may have mistimed a challenge or lost the head for a split second. You only ever seem to comment on limericks perceived disciplinary issue . You make little or no contribution to the hurling chat or discussion and for an ex player I find that extremely curious. As I've said earlier limericks discipline record since 2018 is very good in comparison to the rest of the countys and they've plated by far the most matches in hugely intense and physical atmospheres in thar time. They've had to deal with huge intimidatory tactics, countless jabs to the reproductive area (gleeson on casey 2021 semi: Tynan on WoD 2023 league) , pulling and dragging, butt's of the hurley to thr face (duggan on finn 2022) hurley to the back x2(hayes on Flanagan) knee to the thigh while holding the head ( Liam Ryan on hayes league 2022) . The constant abuse of Aaron gillane gearoid hegarty( munster final ) last year. All these incidents and i could go on for another while are glossed over. The reality is these lads are extremely physical players. They are putting up with incessant abuse and they are not being looked after because of their perceived size and success. It is an extremely biased and defamatory narrative you are persisting on. A crusade Larry almost. For someone who's played the game and can't see this I find is extremely naive.

I always felt Liam Dunne was a much maligned hurler back then. Every team had a few and go watch a few matches from the 90's and tell me they didn't.
I also felt, as somebody who hurled in the backs in the 80's and 90's, if a back was pulling on a ball in the air the intention was to stop a forward catching the ball. A forward swinging over his head and behind him was to try to do the back, or at very least to "lay down a marker". It was something I was on the receiving end more than a few times and can say with 100% certainty that was the intent.
If a forward and a back are both pulling wildly, as both Liam Dunne and Gary Kirby did on that opening play of the 96 All-Ireland, then more the fool whoever comes out the worse. It was the way the game was played back then and anyone who played the game back then knows that was the way.

You've given your view on the Flanagan incident. I have an alternative view. If you look properly at the incident Peter casey hooks Bennett. That hook throws off Bennett and into Flanagan. Only for that intervention by casey it would have been a fair shoulder on shoulder. There was no intention on Flanagan to hit the head. If you watch the tapered 6 second clip in slow motion you'll see what you want to see. If you watch the several angles in real time you'll see something else. I will be 100% sure Flansfan won't be banned because unlike the social media driven narrative against limerick the CCCC are actually objective.

If you want to cast dispersions on certain individuals for intentional head collisions just look back on Shane Kingston on Finn 2022 league and ronan maher on Peter casey 2019 munster final. I'd like you Larry to comment with a bit of objectivity and balance as for a so called ex hurler surely you'd take the time to analyse things properly before you call people out.

So Liam Sheedy, Eddie Brennan and Jackie Tyrrell, to name a few, are wrong, but you, a Limerick man and supporter are right? Or are those three part of 'the social media driven narrative against limerick'?

It really is getting tiresome listening to the way limerick hurlers are described.ive never heard players from other counties described as thugs.i know some of our boys have gone over the top and did reckless stuff..other players in other counties have done stuff just as bad but limerick are way more high lighted.ill take all the criticism going and if we keep winning and getting on peoples nerves, the more I'll actually enjoy it..I'm pretty sure a lot of the other counties would love to be in our position..

The same sheedy that was fair dirty in his day, Eddie Brennan the saint from the 2007 final and Jackie who has put this Limerick team down every chance he gets,I'll rather listen to Tommy Walsh a top class hurler who played on the edge and is the fairest pundit around, love listening to the man.

I looked at the Flanagan incident playing it several times but ignoring any slow motion view. Changed my mind about it and would say it was reckless, a yellow card but cannot see the intent which is always difficult to mind read.
Some of the things in my humble opinion should apply.
1. Was there obvious intent in the hit to the head.
2. Did the player leave his feet. Still can be a head shot but one of the factors.
3. Was there a play involved i.e. the ball present and attempt to play it.
4. Had the receiver his helmet strap tied and if not should be issued a yellow card.
5. Was an elbow up and used to hit the other player.
6. Did the receiver duck down as the hit came in.
As I looked at it Flanagan was coming in a little bit from the side and was not eye balling and lining up Stephen for a head shot. Reckless in the sense that going in like that to tackle without a bead on the players shoulder . All the more reason why these potential red cards need to be reviewed before flashing. There is another aspect to it. There is no way a player should be allowed continue after taking a head shot. Waving a finger in front of his eyes is a joke in this day and age. The player has to go to a quiet room and be assessed for at least 10 minutes as the reaction to the hit can be delayed. Unfortunately that penalises the team further but a substitution like the blood one allowed.
Continued offenders should if assessed for head shots get 10 games suspension.

Daveboy that is funny. Tommy Walsh ? Who I think is a great character. A master of the dark arts when playing. Tipping the helmet down in the eyes of his opponent and lifting the players elbow as he was about to catch the ball. Gleeson's shenanigans with helmets you could see with a blind fold but not Tommy. Tyrell made many opponents eat his hurley . These guys have a neck like a jockey's you know what. Or they get one when they become pundits.
