Showing your hand in the McKenna cup…

Replying To HB245:  "Forde was asked and made the decision to not play, from what I have heard. Can't believe people would question a man like Vinny Corey's integrity. I highly doubt he is showing bias to his clubmen for the sake of it. McDonnell has been the second best keeper in the county for the last 5 years, which is why he's playing. He's a good keeper and we need to get behind him, as he's going to be the most critiqued 'keeper in the country this year regardless of how well he plays, simply because is not Rory Beggan."
not questioning his integrity - big fan of Vinny - just throwing it out there for debate. was always gunna be questions asked in this sense. I'm sure he wont be offended by a random person on the internet anyway... Moreso wondering who the other options are.

The most important player on any serious football team now is the goalkeeper and I won't hear otherwise so its a question worth asking.

They haven't watched too much football if that is their opinion on keepers no disrespect to either keeper but they are not the same standard. Would of said this about nearly all other club keepers even our own.

Agree with another poster there that McDonnell has been the second best in the county this last 2/3 years without a doubt. Conor Forde is definitely up there too but as someone stated it seems he has turned down the decision. After that I am really unsure where to look.

Another poster has stated that McDonnell is going to be compared to Beggan all the time, totally agree with this. Tough on McDonnell but every teams keeper in the country bar 1/2 keepers are compared to Rory. McDonnell will be getting useful advice and training from Beggan no doubt and hopefully will stand to him. Best of Luck to him.

Give Poor McDonnell a break, it was only a few short years ago Beggan had a wobbler against Kerry and now we think there is nobody like him.

With all due respect to the two lads mentioned, that's a poor take. Kirk has a good short game but simply doesn't have enough distance on his kickouts to kick over a heavy press (was exposed badly against Scotstown and Clontibret in the championship last year). As for the Truagh keeper, I believe he has moved to Australia.
The only conversation to be had as regards the goalkeeper situation are:
Darren McDonnell
Conor Forde (Supposedly is not committing)
Shane Garland (has been on panel before and is decent)
Croarkin (current sub keeper but he's only 20/21 and with the amount of spotlight on the Monaghan goalkeeping situation, I'd say it's best we protect him and keep him out of the spotlight for now).
Ironically, Cian Mohan from Scotstown is also well up there in terms of keepers in the county.

Replying To Monaghansclown:  "Can't understand how Conor Forde hasn't been pulled in, he's comfortable on the ball out the field and has brilliant kick outs and free taking. McDonnell has improved as a keeper in recent years but I don't think he is the one is Rory is gone for the whole year...."
Won't come back. Was asked. McDonnell by far the best we have. Not going to be easy to replace one of the greatest keepers of all time with 11 years inter county experience. Patience is going to be needed. The biggest transition in 20 years will take place over the next 2 years.

Replying To SouthOfTheGap:  "Before the game he announced that Michael Langan, Jason McGee, Brendan McCole, Niall O'Donnell and Eoghan Ban are "bang average". Three of them have previously been All Star nominated in the last couple of years. They hardly qualify as being in the bang average category. If you have any "bang average" all star nominations, please be sure to let me know who they are so we can debate their merits. I haven't insulted yours, please don't insult ours."
Ah jasus take it easy. You now have 2 morons instead of one in your ear. Most of us here have nothing but the height of respect for all the Donegal lads of the past 12 or 13 years. Always enjoyed the days we beat ye but were never too down when we lost to ye as we knew we had been beaten by a great team who played football and didn't resort to the dark arts. Was delighted to be in Croker in 2012 and felt devastated for ye in 2014 (the one that got away). Great memories of mixing with your supporters in Clones in 13, 14 and 15. And finally a great memory of Murphy and McFadden shaking my then 10 year old son's hand on the field in 2013 after what had to be a crushing defeat. All Stars one and all.

Completely agree patience is going to be required over the next 2/3 years… with Kelly, gallagher, Carey and possibly beggan, boyle and k hughes gone there's a lot of big boots to be filled…add in the fact that o Connell, Darren & McManus will be gone at the end of this season.. it's gives a sobbering thought of what's ahead….

Solution to the goal keeper situation is an outfield player. Unfortunately aside from McDonnell bad error for the goal yesterday. The kickout return has been very poor when a quick kick out isn't an option.

Vinny and Monaghan want to play with the Keeper coming out the field and being a link man.

Beggan kickout retention is up with the best around.

At the end of the day I feel sorry for anyone stepping into his shoes, because we are talking about a player who has revolutionised the goalkeepers position and so important to Monaghan fortunes over the years.

Ryan Farrelly & Joe Kirk both viable options as well both have been on the Monaghan senior panel in last few seasons and both respectively play football for their club out the field so be very comfortable on the ball

Both are laughable options. Cian Mohan would be the third best keeper in the county in my opinion. If Ford won't come out then the levers should be put on Cian.

Agree but I don't think Scotstown be too happy with that. They have been without Beggan for so long and so many league campaigns, Cian has held them afloat while he was away. Can't imagine they want to lose him.

It really must be considered the effect of Beggans departure on Scotstowns hopes if he signs for the NFL. Not disrespecting Mohan cause he is brilliant but he hasn't got what Rory has and unfortunately no other keeper in the county has what Rory has. is Rory is successful which I hope he is because it would be life changing for him and I wish him well, Scotstown would be weakened IMO. I am open to be corrected but I think what he does/brings to the Scotstown setup is second to none.

In terms of size and stature along with ability off the ground you are correct. We haven't really produced much from Minor or 21s in last 5/6 years

Nine years since Monaghan won Ulster so obviously not that revolutionary

Are Kieran Hughes and Conor Boyle gone for the year? Both would be big losses for squad depth

Micheal mccarville was sub-keeper in Bantys last year so maybe he could be an option for keeper…
