I think the Kerry /Galway quarter final in 08 was around 4pm but because of the downpour and horrendous flooding it got dark early and the floodlighs had to come on for the first time ever in a gaa match. The evening game is very hard on Galway supporters and hotels and the likes are booked out dor Taylor Swift and even if lucky enough to find axcomodation one would pay through the nose for it.The gaa hierarchy never take into consideration the plight of supporters far away.

GAA know that the schedule will suppress support from the west but they are in a mad rush to finish the season. This is the real problem. Jarlath knows this and he has intimated that a change is coming in future. Fixture time will not influence result in fairness. Galway will put in a good shift and the result is not a foregone conclusion. suckvalleypaddy (Galway) - Posts: 1736 - 27/06/2024 13:14:25 2555148 Link 1 |
I agree with you regarding the mad rush to finish the season but Saturday evening quarter finals have been there for 20 years.

Out of curiosity, was that not Tyrone and Dublin in '08? The day the great Ronnie Drew died? Tyrone won 3-14 to 1-08? I may be wrong but from what I can remember the floodlights was on for throw in because of the rain, thunder and lightening

I might have a few bob on them myself. I thought that would have been priced something closer to Armagh 4/6. Not a huge pile to separate them if anything on recent form, and Ulster factor clearly counts for little as few teams go to Omagh like the Rossies and beat Tyrone. Wouldn't rule out other surprises but that's most likely to go against the book. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3531 - 27/06/2024 15:16:13 2555186 Link 0 |
Expecting Galway supporters to head to West or North Galway, some with young families, at 8pm or later on a Saturday night is unfair and inconsiderate to say the least - says a lot about the GAA's priorities.

Probably just follows to get a good laugh, like the rest of the country.

Yes seen that literally just confirmed, would hope this was outlined somewhere at start of competition.

PS this draw will take place after the Kerry Derry game live on Sunday game, which further raises peoples point of why do all other round draws be on a Monday morning at 8.30am on Radio?? macca999 (Fermanagh) - Posts: 1167 - 28/06/2024 14:21:47 2555399 Link 2 |
Derry well struggle against kerry blanket defence. Legs will be tired playing 3 weeks in a row. LimerickForLiam24 (Limerick) - Posts: 165 - 28/06/2024 15:50:33 2555425 Link 0 |
When you are allowed loose so often and still be in the Championship what on earth is the point in not allowing repeat pairings… ? They will soon end up with a Final that can't be played… The top 2 in each group should go through with an open draw 1st v 2nd from a different group regardless of whether they met before or not… They love making a complicated mess of things…

Depends on the semi finalists. Repeat pairings are avoided- repeat pairings from the group stage or provincial finals. Say for instance the 4 favourites qualify. Armagh Dublin Donegal Kerry Armagh met Donegal in the Ulster final so they would not be paired together. In that case it would be for instance: Dublin vs Armagh Kerry vs Donegal But again it all depends on who qualifies. If the four were: Armagh Dublin Donegal Derry Donegal and Armagh can't face each other. Derry couldn't face Armagh as they were paired in the group so the only matches could be: Dublin vs Armagh Derry vs Donegal These are probably the most likely outcomes. The timing of the Dublin/Galway match is a disgrace. The last train to Galway leaves at about 7:30. Both matches could have been played two hours earlier. It seems to have been scheduled to suit the Dubs fans again Rossieforever (Roscommon) - Posts: 102 - 28/06/2024 22:29:34 2555476 Link 0 |
Correct, Tyrone were scoring goals for fun, big Joe got in on the act as well. there was also flooding around Croke Park the day before for the Armagh game.

And yet its scheduling has nothing whatsoever to do with Dublin or Dublin supporters.

With the draw for the group stage of the A.I.C group stage being made before the Provincial finals- it was known that the the Connacht runners up were in the group with the Leinster winners and in the long run it would be advantageous to be in that group [Thus avoiding Dublin until the All Ireland Final] Well it has come to pass Galway meet Dublin in the Q.F. Had it been that Galway lost the Connacht Final this pairing would not be happening now. A downside of being a Provincial Champion-higher chance of meeting Dublin in a Q.F or S.F. edu (Mayo) - Posts: 102 - 29/06/2024 10:00:14 2555504 Link 0 |
