But there's a reason why those teams were in the prelims in the first place, because they weren't good enough to go straight through. I've heard both arguments, a team with a 2-3 week break being "ring rusty" against a team with 2 matches in a row having "momentum" and being "sharp". You'll often hear lads coming off the back of a hard win saying that the next game can't come quick enough. You'll rarely hear them saying that they're looking forward to putting their feet up for a couple of weeks. Mayo lost against Derry for no other reason than they don't have forwards. It had nothing to do with fatigue. Year before last Mayo beat Monaghan on June 4th and hammered Kildare the following week to go though to the QFs. Armagh beat Tyrone on 5th and hammered Donegal the following week to make a QF. Both Mayo and Derry then had two week breaks before the QF and both lost. I think I'd much prefer to carry momentum than to be coming in cold.

I like the new format more than I did at the start, it benefits the provincial winners and then the winners of the group, as it should do. If there could be a rest week after the group finishes, then play the pre-lim games and then the quarter final the following weekend, it still gives the advantage to the group winner and the team coming through gets there second chance and then has to play two weekends in row which is tough. tommy132 (Mayo) - Posts: 638 - 25/06/2024 13:19:57 2554740 Link 1 |
As I say only a fool pays into a turkey shoot….. I can't account for 8k of them from Dublin… Probably enjoyed getting a rare trip away from Croke park… It definitely wasn't for the football….

I see now why they our game with Louth starting at 1.15 on Sunday, England are playing at 5pm so naturally our great national public service broadcaster want the 'Gah' over and done with earlier. Tirchonaill1 (Donegal) - Posts: 3190 - 25/06/2024 13:45:03 2554749 Link 1 |
Mayo were and are the only team who go man to man with Dublin and it's the only way to beat them. Obviously the risk with that is you'll get the odd hammering which we have against them on two or three occasions.

I've been reading all week how Mayo should have bet Dublin, and the result proves Mayo are a top team and blah blah blah.. Belclare7 (Galway) - Posts: 256 - 26/06/2024 08:36:31 2554891 Link 2 |
Two good games on the bounce against good opposition for Dublin. jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20763 - 26/06/2024 10:40:23 2554911 Link 1 |
I think that's a fair point. Also worrying from Dublin perspective how easily Derry limited Mayo scoring threat via ease of penetration against ourselves. Hopefully that's a lesson learned but I would fear for them in absence of a fit Jamsie, Gannon and Murphy.

Give it a rest belclare. Mayo didn't beat Dublin and ultimately paid the price for failing to close out a game yet again. All I see over on the Galway forum is Mayo this and Mayo that. The obsession continues, time everyone stopped talking about us. We will see where the lie of the land is after this coming weekend.

You are part of a group of small posters on here absolutely obsessed with Mayo and the coverage they get. Baffling .

Injuries to key Galway players could be a major factor Jimbo. Hopefully we get our own injured players back very soon. Our defense needs those re-reinforcements. One thing is for sure - we need to up our game.... Fionn (Dublin) - Posts: 4246 - 26/06/2024 15:42:37 2554989 Link 1 |

Hardly obsessed but I find the whole " mayo are the real deal" and " we haven't gone away" lark not to mention the " mayo roar" .. Like do many times over the years they haven't got any decent forwards and ultimately continue to pay the price. In relation to this weekend everyone in the country expects a Dublin win even ourselves.. its called been realistic.. something lacking over the border Belclare7 (Galway) - Posts: 256 - 26/06/2024 18:08:25 2555015 Link 0 |
Mayo are the England of Gaelic football, all mouth and no trousers when the chips are down. 1966, 1951, lol Any word on any retirements down there? Suppose they will wait to the week of the All Ireland final to make any announcements and their wee cheerleaders in RTE will keep Mayo in the conversation as usual. Mayo the gift that keeps on giving, the amount of enjoyment they give is off the charts, lol Tirchonaill1 (Donegal) - Posts: 3190 - 26/06/2024 19:02:53 2555026 Link 5 |
The other issue is if you are from Clifden, Leitir Mór or indeed Oilean Arainn (club of our half back Sean Mulkerrins) it is a long long trek home. I take the point on Louth but Derry in fairness were beaten 3 times so the benefit of winning your province is minimal across all facets. We are unbeaten thus far (granted we did not score heavily in the group which of course is on us) but an extra day would have been a small additional sweetener in an overall context.

Fair point - I think the timing on the Sat games needs to be re-visited by the GAA and residents in fairness. It is not as if it is every week. On the group thing - Top 2 only should qualify imo. Also, an extra 2 weeks should be added to the Inter county calendar - the penalty nonsense and 3 weeks in a row in madness could be fixed also, if the season was lengthened ever so slightly. For whatever reason one of quarter finals has been at approximately this time for years now, long predating recent changes. Indeed wasn't the classic Galway/Kerry game in rain one such? Not checked yet so not sure. Anyway it is not some cunning plan to drag Galway out in middle of night to benefit the wily Dubs who all live 5 minutes away of course.
