Ah yes Paul Carley was a good man for a goal. Think he got one in 2001 the closest we came to an AI U21 since the 60s. Good up and coming manager too did well to get a Leinster Intermediate hurling title with Bray last year. Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 9720 - 02/08/2023 17:50:15 2498730 Link 0 |
I'm not as familiar with the club scene in Wexford anymore but I'm wondering what happened to some players who were previously with the panel - Seamus Casey was tried in goal and I always thought he looked like he had potential; Darren Byrne was tried at full back and thought he did okay but haven't heard of him since; David Dunne always came on as an impact sub but never really reached his potential. Are any of these guys worth another shot? the_post (USA) - Posts: 183 - 03/08/2023 10:35:18 2498799 Link 0 |
I will see Darren Byrne playing on Saturday he plays 6 for his club but played 3 for the u21s in 2018 and in the corner for the Seniors under Davy. He stepped away though and I don't know if he was asked back by Egan. David Dunne was with the panel earlier in the year apparently, not sure if he got injured. Seamus Casey is a very talented hurler and freetaker but not sure he really wants to commit to the Senior Intercounty set up. He hurled intercounty for around 10 years between underage and Senior. For sure all 3 would be worth contacting. I'd imagine the best course of action for the incoming management would be to contact all the clubs for names of potential players, invite those lads in for trials and see who comes, who really gives it a good shot, and who does well.

Thought Darren Byrne was a really good prospect. He made one big mistake in a league game and was dropped. Casey was excellent in the forwards in the Walsh Cup and got a couple of league appearances. Dunne has incredible pace but could never really nail down a spot. Certainly a useful player though, and was involved this year Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 2284 - 03/08/2023 12:42:29 2498824 Link 0 |
McGrath was always going to be asked/interviewed but he's yesterday's man for me. His own county havent gone back for him, somewhat surprisingly, but we shouldn't either. As a 'name', he might get more players to commit to the cause initially like Davy did but that aside we can't go back to playing that negative style. I didn't see any improvement by Jacko under Egan. Incredibly frustrating player to watch. His brother has regressed too. Timbertony (Wexford) - Posts: 136 - 03/08/2023 12:43:54 2498825 Link 0 |
Agreed on Lawlor, I wasn't overly impressed with him. Granted was his first season and our defensive shape was a mess. Made a terrible error v Dublin that cost us a goal at a crucial time. Soft of the KK goals were soft enough too but I'm glossing over last season? I liked the look of Mahon for the U20s, just looked a bit sharper on his feet. Not sure if Fanning has it in him to give it another go, difficult club season but hardly his fault. Timbertony (Wexford) - Posts: 136 - 03/08/2023 12:53:23 2498830 Link 0 |
We have a massive goalkeeper issue.

Nearly sure Dunne picked up an injury? Thought Darren Byrne did ok too he was only 21 when he was in the team. Casey is a good player.

#long time follower, first post in a long time # Why are lads being critical of lawlor? The goal via Dublin certainly wasn't his fault in my eyes ,it was an error from Shane reck if anything , both should have communicated better. Overal I thought lawlor was very solid, done all the basics well unlike his predessor.under no circumstances should fanning even be considered for a return. Firstly he is a very poor keeper with a long history of errors and secondly his behaviour when he found out he wasn't first choice was embarrassing. I wasn't impressed with Mahon either, seemed to take an age over puck outs with a very slow striking action. As regards Derek mc grath _ that would be a terrible appointment. Not to mention getting well funded to coach the harriers before disappearing on holidays in the middle of the championship. I see viking66 had an interesting post re players and from attending 80% of Games I would agree with alot of those mentioned. The players who caught my eye in the intermediate rank are cathal Doyle from vikings club and the other is Thomas kinsella askamore ,he has been the stand out performer and looks to have physically developed from his under 20 days. Cian Byrne of fethard is huge talent but isint hurling to his ability at present In senior, despite playing in a struggling team, Jack redmond has been immense, 1-19 from play in his last 3 games, hugely promising. Didn't catch fire for the 20s this year but a big prospect. cragask1234 (Wexford) - Posts: 7 - 03/08/2023 13:27:56 2498845 Link 2 |
Bit unfair on Rory to say he's gone back. Hes battled injury. Also the gameplan the last 2 years hasn't suited him at all I don't think. Or are you talking about Harry?

After Fannings reaction to losing his place id be leaving him where he is personally.

Yeah Rory, for me ability wise he's up there with likes of Gillane, Cody and Whelan but performance wise he hasn't come close to matching their consistency. I know he's had injuries but physically he has a lot of work to do to match those three. Struggles to break the tackle against tight marking defenders like Grealish.

Let's hope Paudie Foley is back on board for next year as we badly missed him. Cian Molloy and Cullen would surely be close to starting positions if they committed, Cullen was in with Davy but made little impression for whatever reason. Molloy not sure what issue is there, frustrating when lads who play underage all the way up then don't commit at senior. Lots of the lads on your list above have been tried but fell short for various reasons. The intensity of play at club level will pick up over the weekend but the reality is it's mostly lads already on the county panel who will stand out. Throw in the level of commitment required to compete at county level (gym, nutrition, skill work etc) and those names drop off further.

Agree Grealish has done well on Rory the last couple of years. But fouls him alot too costing a good few frees. If only we had a consistent freetaker.....

I think the days of trials are over viking and they hold little value. If you can't judge or rate a players ability in the middle of summer then I feel its very unfair to judge them on a wet soggy pitch when there half fit in the middle of January. There are players worth bringing in which include cathal Doyle,Thomas kinsella ,Jack redmond ,shamey o hagan (forward that can win he's own ball ), cian molly, daragh carley ,Mike Kelly, aj redmond, Kyle firman, diarmuid o leary, diarmuid Doyle, Corey Byrne , cian Byrne, oisin pepper, Ritchie lawlor,,conal clancy, Kyle scallan, eoin whelan. I've heard good things about Oisin Hayes of davidstown but haven't seen him hurl myself or even know what age he is. I feel Darren Byrne has missed the boat, 26 or 27 Is late in the game to go at intercounty . Lads like Simon roche, daragh kehoe, conor foley should be around the panel also but there all under 20 again. Get a mngt team sorted and get those lads up to speed physically and develop a cohesive functional game plan during the Walsh Cup,see where we go from there. cragask1234 (Wexford) - Posts: 7 - 03/08/2023 14:51:00 2498884 Link 0 |
Cullen was in Egans 1st year panel also. He only dropped out in January or February

Id love to see stats on how much of an issue the freetaking is compared to other counties, say from midfield in. Chin seems to lose accuracy the further out he goes. I suspect the freetaking issue is a bit overplayed. I'm not gone on the technique of either Chin or ROC to be honest, under pressure that technique seems very shaky. Long distance, you could see how important Byrnes was in the first half of the All Ireland for Limerick. I've never been confident with likes of Paudie Foley or Fanning from way out.

A good list there but some wouldn't commit last year or dropped out. Byrne is only 25 I think not 28. But in any case Tom Phelan has had a great year for Kilkenny after not really playing much before this and he is 28. Eoin Whelan still has another year at u20 but is an excellent prospect I've seen him play 5 or 6 times this year and he hasn't had a bad game in any of them. Simon Roche is u20 also next year, but Conor Foley isn't I don't think. Think Kehoe is u20 again alright. Haven't seen Hayes play either but why not look at him the grade of his club should be irrelevant. Pauric and Cristoir Reville are probably Kilmores best players and are only in their early 20s also.
