Tailteann Cup 2022

I think yesterday's result for Offaly v Wexford was a great result in the sense that they were previously beaten on a prior visit to the same county. This was more of a psychological win than anything else. Firstly you have to overcome any previous thoughts of your recent visit but also this is now a different competition and it is knockout. Who cares how old mc namee is, he is still a class footballer. I think this result will bring on Offaly in leaps and bounds. In relation to Wicklow s win, Waterford were one of the poorest teams that have visited Aughrim in recent years

Replying To Yondu:  "Good victory? Let's not lose the run of yourself. Offaly fell over the line against Div 4 opposition. Relied on 37 year old to pull them through. Hard slog training and discipline from his Army days are brought into every team he's ever managed.

@Howdareu I watched the full game. Maughan is still at the same carry on as the 90s with Zonal marking, looking to counter attack and kicking high hopefully balls into the full forward line. The game has moved on tactically since he had any championship success. I won't be surprised if Wicklow take them out next."
Not sure you could describe us under Maughan in the 90s as counter attacking and kicking high hopeful balls into the forward line. Might be closer description to how we've been playing recently though. He used to be disciplinarian my way or the highway manager and apparently some Offaly players took the highway. Kevin O'Neill wasn't a player that Maughan had great time for but maybe he had too much talent and wouldn't put in the hard work that Maughan asked for. He's as popular as Andy Moran with Roscommon supporters but Andy never, and never would, even consider referring to Roscommon supporters as customers. He's either a self-confident or an arrogan man or both. No harm in putting some arrogance into your squad of players if they can back it up or strive to get better and more confident. Maybe his persona is not the man himself.

Replying To Yondu:  "Billy Morgan is gent and wouldn't say anything bad about the lad he put under his wing.

No grudge i call things as i see them. You seem to be a bit of fan boy for Maughan and i must have hit a nerve.

The top teams engage and don't stand waiting for something to happen when they get numbers back and have a system and pattern to their play when they break. Zonal marking that Offaly did yesterday was marking space instead of the man. Div 4 Wexford who only beat London, Waterford narrowly this spring and the highest score they managed in their 7 games was 0-15.

Yesterday they scored 2-13 and could or should have scored 4-16 at least."
Yes I know Blly Morgan is a gent- I actually know him very well and he does not suffer fools and I know for a fact that he rates Tomás very highly. You seem to have a grudge against John Maughan for some reason anyway. Sure you obviously know better how to manage teams than a man who has been doing it successfully for many years and got within a whisker of winning All Irelands in the process, not to mention his success with Clare in 1992. I am sure your record is on a par with that. I am also sure that the Offaly players are so unhappy with Maughan that they have played for him for the past four years. Yea sure it all adds up now.

I agree 100%. some people just love to be negative, not mentioning names but I think we all know who he/they are. Criticising for the sake of it. McNamee is a wonderful footballer and of course he is the focal point of their team- Cluxton was nearly 40 and was integral to Dublin. Conor Mcmanus is 35 but still playing away. So I do not understand what the issue was with McNamee

It's a sad time of day when dropping high balls into the forward line is seen as old fashioned and not skillful, it is a pity there isn't more of it nowadays instead of the current basketball drudgery we are getting.

I was a bit puzzled by that remark myself: given that we had the likes of John Casey, PJ Loftus, Larry Finnerty etc. (none of them giants) in our full-forward line back then, it wouldn't have made much sense to bomb high ball in around the square. We played Liam McHale in at full-forward in the 1997 final and proceeded to hit low ball in to him! I also seem to remember that we got a lot of criticism for having too much hand passing back then, too.

Jack O'Connor said that he thought of the high ball tactic into Johnny Crowley for the 2004 final as we lacked big forwards at the time, and thus our backs weren't used to defending high ones.

The high ball tactic only came in for us with Aido around 2015, with very mixed levels of success.

Anyway, best of luck to JM with Offaly, whether he's still a polarising figure or not, ultimately he's still a GAA volunteer like the rest of us.

that has got to be up there with the most ridiculous comments on HG.

Doesn't deal well with those who don't agree with his world view (as many don't). Someone should start up a fresh thread on predictions and results once the Tailteann Cup gets underway and take the debate to a more forward-facing place."
i know, the same poster has basically taken over the whole Cavan thread… it is extremely boring.

I think I would go with the below though a lot of games are very open. The teams you would be most confident of qualifying are probably Sligo, then Cavan, then Westmeath.

New York, Offaly, Tipperary and Westmeath in the south
Cavan, Antrim, Fermanagh and Sligo in the north

There already is a football prediction competition, on this forum.

"The teams are divided into Northern and Southern Sections to enhance local rivalries and also avoiding travel costs, not only for teams, but for spectators as well. We want to accommodate as many people as possible to be able to attend the games"
The words of Larry McCarthy at draw, not that worried about cost to supporters when charge €15 into tailteann cup games though!! and i see its €25 into All Ireland Qualifiers too.

Guessing attendances in Aughrim and Enniscorthy were poor last week?

Id say be low numbers this week between cost and other sporting events on but hopefully good turnout Saturday in Pearse Park, be interesting to see the crowds and coverage it gets(especially with 4 provincial finals on too).
Least Sunday game acknowledged it last week

It's been good to see a lot of positive interviews with players during the week ahead of the weekends games.

Yeah the one with Mickey Quinn is very good. He talks a lot of sense and if enough players are invested similarly to him the competition could be a huge success.

Well done to Leitrim on their win. Both Leitrim and Antrim had a good league in their respective divisions. For Antrim, in this 2022 format, there isn't a second day out. It's tough. For Leitrim, they are 70 minutes away from a Croke Park semi-final, live on RTÉ 2 on a Sunday afternoon.
