Replying To bloodyban:  "You're facts aren't correct in that incident. The Wexford guy got sent off because he started it. But you're right it's a long time ago and both counties have gone on vastly different trajectories even though one of those counties has a huge rugby playing population. I for one would love that Wexford/Limerick rivalry reignite."
Forget 96.

I for one was pleased for limerick in recent times, but now like any other hurling fan want to see them beaten.

Massive admiration for how they've raised the bar.

It's up to the rest of us to try and catch them.

One of my fondest memories is a limerick couple that came to Wexford Park for the all star game in 96 with a fog horn and fully decked out in green.

They were serious craic

Doylerwex, that is the point. Everybody was delighted for Limerick and now want them beaten. This is only natural of any successful team, it would be a great problem to have. That said, I asked my da last night if he'd switch the 96 victory for the success Limerick are having now and his reply was he wouldn't swap it for 10 All-Irelands now.
All I did was offer an opinion on a debatable decision and to bring up incident in a match 25 years ago in response is nothing other than pathetic. I hurled with lads from Limerick in college and they are all the same. I never got it, they were all in nappies like me when the match was played! I wasn't aware of any Wexford-Limerick on-field rivalry other than this match, I know we had an u21 finals.

If you can't accept a differing opinion then a forum like this might not be the best place to stop by.

Anywho, bygones be bygones and nobody got killed in the 96 All-Ireland despite the hatcheting of both teams.

Weekend predictions:
Laois v Galway Galway.by 20
Dublin v Kilkenny Kilkenny by 3
Westmeath v Wexford Wexford by 5 (Joe Fortune will know everything about us)
Clare v Limerick Limerick by 7
Waterford v Cork Waterford by 9

The Dublin game will be interesting as they've become our 'bogey' team"
I was at the Wexford Galway game and watched it back on recording when I got home. The 1st half both teams were poor only we were alot poorer. We didn't do any of the fundamentals you are taught on a GAA coaching course well. After half time we started to creep back into it. By the very end you were playing more poorly than us. If the game have gone on for another 5 minutes we would most likely have won by a few points. Yes both teams had alot of wides, you in the 1st half and us in the 2nd, but that's Wexford Park for you. Bit like Salthill. If hurling games were only 50 minutes long yes you should have won more comfortably. If they were 80 minutes as in the early 70s I'd say we would've won comfortably.
I watched the Galway Kilkenny game on TV. Galway were better in the 1st half. Kilkenny were better in the second. Whelan coming on gave you a bit of a lift at the end and you deserved the 1 point win. Think saying you were 4 or 5 points better is a bit optimistic.
The Dublin game will be interesting. The Dubs have the size to match you. Alot will depend on their belief.

I'm sorry to hear you were only in nappies.

The leinster final was an even bigger deal.

We hammered a great offaly team that threw everything they had at us.

The pitch invasion was amazing.

I still have the grass cuttings from the pitch in a sandwich bag at the centre page of the programme.

The whole county went nuts.

Footpaths and telephone poles in Wolfe Tone (the home of Lee chin and Billy Walsh) were painted purple and gold.

Street parties all over their town and the team arrived with the cups.

An old lady down the road from Wexford Park named Mrs Hynes had her flag out every weekend all year for as long as anybody could remember and Larry o Gorman and Martin storey knocked her door on the night to thank her for never giving up on them.

I agree with your dad.

I'd love to see another one, but wouldn't swap that for anything.

Great Post Doylerwex! Was an amazing couple of weeks! Months even. Could've been even better in 97 only for the cursed back door!!!

Its very rare that a scoreboard isnt a fair reflection of a game. I dont buy into the fact that Galway should have won either matches easily. They struggled badly for periods in both games. Thyeve serious room for improvement however - but remains to be seen if they can improve. Wexford and KK also should improve.

Agreed!

Although you could make the point the back door hurt us the most in 04.

Us and Waterford would likely have contested that final in days gone by, and who knows?? We'd beaten them the previous season in championship.

All in all the back door has been good to us so won't complain.

Great Post. I was beyond distraught that day as with 94 as we felt getting through the bear pit of munster we deserved the AI. We had a great team in those days some are still me heroes and I was 17 pushing hard for minor teams so was consumed by hurling. Its with time you realise you deserve what you get and that's it. My best friend who travelled up with us had 2 jerseys on him. His mother was wexford. He wasn't long after the whistle in the yellow belly colours.

He went a different road home courtesy of an uncle he barely knew. The best 2 days he ever had down in Gorey he told us for years after and still does. He said nobody would celebrate an AI like wexford but in 18 back in the green he said we came fair close.

I like the sentiment about not giving it up for 10 more. They are the most special days. Literally the most for me anyway. Would I give up what we are blessed to have now. For those 2 back then. No.

It's the greatest game in the world.

Tbh the 1st years I was watching Wexford in the early 90s would've been the years we wouldve benefitted most from a backdoor. Especially 93.

Great memories for both 96 and 18 for Limerick. What's rare is beautiful. I suppose you'll never change what you win especially after a long time without.
When Chin scored goal v Tipp in 2019 I thought I was going to witness AI final day for myself. What might have been and don't see us getting as good a chance any time soon. But hope it will come at some point in the next 60+ years I hope to have.
Sure what would we do without the hope and dreams and the debate over decisions, referees, matches. We are here because we love it.

They really shouldn't have let Kilkenny off the hook in the drawn leinster final. They'd a great team, storey putting over line balls for fun.

Yes Bon. It was great to see most of them getting there in 96. When you think of the good Limerick hurlers of that generation missing out. Or lads like Browne, Walsh, Mcgrath, Mullane Shanahan etc missing out in the 00s as part of a very good Waterford team. Joe Canning nearly missed out despite being part of a good Galway team that went very close from 2012 to 2016. Hurling can be cruel.

Brilliant Kilkenny equalising point. Totally clinical. The cats at their best.

They were brilliant teams Offaly '94 and Wexford '96 who fully deserved their All Irelands.....I was absolutely delighted both won. John Troy and Martin Story were my favourite hurlers of that time hence both Centre Forwards....I'd record their matches and watch their little tricks, flicks and movement on the video!
Not only were they brilliant individuals but they were great for setting up scores for others.

what about 1998, beaten by offaly by a last minute goal, and with all the 1798 anniversary i think wexford were looking to give it a serious crack that year and looked better than offaly that day and offaly went on and won the AI

Felt the exact same in 19.

Went as far as to book a train ticket 20 minutes before full time.

Will genuinely haunt me forever.

Remember when the whistle blue just thinking no this isn't right... They made a mistake.. This is our year
