I lived in Dublin for many years, and spent much of my childhood in S Donegal. During the Troubles, did you ever visit the North?

Interestingly, you manage to be constitutionally incorrect in relation to both jurisdictions.

First, you refer to "the Republic". Ireland may describe itself as a Republic under the Republic of Ireland Act, but, notably, it does not do so under the Constitution. And, as Ivana Bacik noted in her Philip Monahan lecture at UCC in 2009, Ireland is organised and ran on distinctly non-Republican lines. The Republic of Ireland is a soccer team; the correct name of the country is "Ireland".

Second, and as has been pointed out, even technically, we're not Brits - pursuant to the Northern Ireland Constitution Act 1973 (as amended), it's the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland." The "and" is disjunctive, hence, even pursuant to UK law, NI is not part of Britain.

Replying To Pikeman96:  "If that sort of sectarian "sledging" is genuinely going on, then yes, it's time to take a stand.

Just as it's time to take a stand against the sort of "sledging" that Northern teams have been guilty of for years, using those terms like "Free Staters", "West Brits", and "safe South".

And also like it's time to take a stand against things like we saw from that club in Tyrone recently - erecting a memorial to three "fallen Gaels", who in reality were paramilitaries on active service at the times of their separate deaths.

It's one of the fundamental rules of the Association:

Any conduct by deed, word, or gesture of sectarian or racist nature or which is contrary to the principles of inclusion and diversity against a player, official, spectator or anyone else, in the course of activities organised by the Association, shall be deemed to have discredited the Association."
What is a Pikeman and what did they do in Irish history?

Replying To MachaireConnacht:  "I've been reading the HS forum for years but never posted until now. This post is gaslighting and actually embarrassing to see from a fellow Rossie, showing complete ignorance of our country's history. I'm hoping a mitigating factor is that you were born in 93 and so have no living memory of the Troubles and what our fellow countrymen in the north-east of the island had to endure. Count yourself lucky you grew up in a time and location in the country well insulated from conflict."
Fair play to you MachaireConnacht, I replied to Sourmilk about him living in his safe wee bubble and never been taken out of a car a gunpoint by British RUC just because you had GAA gear in boot. It's like the "I'm alright Jack" mentality.

You do realise that an investigation found that there were no comments actually made about the players father and both county committees accepted this to be the case?? So maybe get your facts in order before you come on here spouting nonsense. Thanks

This is embarrassing lad. Maybe you should consider taking a hiatus from hogan stand and go educate yourself on the North. Do us all a favour

Nothing like a thread like this on HS to show how truly divided we are as an island. Politically & culturally.

Anyone from the 26 counties telling anyone from the 6 counties that they know what life was like for them before the troubles, during the troubles and after the troubles is talking rubbish. We haven't a notion. Internment, family members maimed and killed, fitted up, people stopped and intimidated going to and from GAA matches and training, British army doing 'random' checks of houses, ripping up floorboards allegedly looking for guns. These are only stories I've heard. The tip of the iceberg. Most of us here don't get that the GAA is more than a sporting organisation for GAA members in the six counties. It's a symbol of Irishness in a part of Ireland that's still under British rule and a lot more besides. Any GAA players from north or south involved in sectarian verbals or other sledging should face lengthy suspensions or life bans.

How about black cards for sledging..... games would end up 1 v 1.
Although with the wandering goalkeeper malaise might end up with all 30 in the bin.

I can never understand how proud Irish men and women on either side of the border can resort to this sort of petty us and them attitude. It goes against the entire ethos of the GAA. If it's a sledging thing then it says more about the instigator's lack of intelligence and imagination. Personally I'd be far more offended by my direct opponent criticising my ability and calling me ***** than any old guff about being a Free Stater. (both have happened back in my playing days much as I don't like to admit it!)

Well exactly or no one was ever shot in the back returning home over the Shannon after playing the Dub's. There is a blinkered attitude among many in the south with regard to what went on in the north. This website contains the name of a man that was shot by the British a century ago just because he played Gaelic games. That was still going on in the north as recent as the 1980's.

There was a full and rigorous investigation into those claims and there was nothing proven - google it. and get your facts right.

I don't really see what the insult actually is?

Good schools, infrastructure and free health care.

Sounds to me like us northerners could be called worse things than British.

The funny thing is though. As soon as we produce a world class sports star or movie star or celebrity of some kind they are no longer British..they automatically become Irish again!

Must be magic of some kind.
