I would also say of all counties I hope Waterford will win one soon. Any year the top three are kept down is a good one for hurling. Any win by one of the next tier should be a source of encouragement to other counties with similiar picks and not something to be begrudged. Of course we are well off the big three in hurling. Cork have five times our hurling population and Kilkenny play absolutely no other game. Tipp is a truly mighty hurling county of course. Limerick clubs have won All titles in both codes in at All Ireland Club level with NIHE winning the Football back in '78 and Na Piarsaigh the hurling in '16. No harm to check facts every now and again. Anyway what does club titles matter if All Irelands at Senior Level are scant in the ground. Well may you mention Offaly. Our Two counties have a stunning record in Finals against the tiny Midland County- a 100% failure. I have never seen an East Galway man, and I know a good few of them, that would prefer to see Galway win Football titles before hurling ones. And yes Galway do perform well in football and I for one would never belittle their achievements by saying 'Ah Shure they are well off the big two'. You have to take into account that special circumstances make it easier for at least four of the' big five' to win All Irelands and even more significantly always has." Brilliant post Oldtourman. I love the way you presented all those facts, although I suspect you had tongue in cheek when referencing NIHE's club football title. Nobody can dispute that, even though I doubt if there was one Limerick man on the team. Yes indeed Fitzy. Seventy five All Ireland Senior have been won by Munster teams, so it is never easy to come out on top in that bear pit. I have followed Limerick for sixty years and always with pride and passion. It is not always about winning the ultimate prize. I remember being at a an All Ireland Final under 21 Final in 2001 and ourselves and the other great hurling followers, the old Model County, packed 34, 000 people into Semple Stadium and an epic match ensued. Suffice to say nobody left until the very end and even long the Final whistle people were still out on the middle still sampling the atmosphere of a memorable occasion. It is days like thatand the epic U21 Munster Final with Cork in 2011 that we live for. I think like most counties we have great followers, who are always great to meet. As I say, why would we not be proud of our hurling history. Winning senior All Irelands in eight different decades is no mean achievement, especially when you consider that we have very little input from our City. Managers need to get players up to speed and quickly. They also need to get game time into the starting 15 and next 5 up. First 2 weeks allowed a certain element of experimentation and getting match fitness up a notch or two but from now on after the 2 week break i think most counties will be engaging heavily into all the remaining fixtures. Not sure why that was, wouldn't be shadow boxing as we might not play them at all this year. There is only 2 weeks from league final to start of round Robin which then will be very intense over a 6 week period. But certain managers will have differing opinions on this in relation to where their group are at. I vaguely remember 1 league final, but I wasn't born in 73 so if we are in the hunt I'd be delighted. I'd be hoping we can get another 4 points from the 3 remaining games. In my view, naturally it's a biased one, he always went out to play the game and to play it to the best of his ability. I don't believe he ever went out to intentionally strike or injure a player. He was always double or treble marked, getting hit from all sides and there were times when he got no protection from the ref or from the other officials on the field. If he did react to some of that mistreatment, it's understandable. I wouldn't blame him for it. I have seen him having to leave the field badly injured on a number of occasions. One of those games, an AISF that Galway lost by a point, he wasn't even awarded a free. I'd imagine there's hardly a part of his body that hasn't been injured both as a club player and an inter-county player. I'm sure it's a similar story with other gifted players from the other hurling counties. The jargon for a number of years now is 'workrate, tackles, hits, intensity' with very little talk or reference to hurling or hurling ability. I'm glad Canning, for his own sake, retired last year. If we lose it will put us under a bit of pressure to win the last 2 games at home to Offaly and then Cork. Relegation is going to be between Offaly, Laois and Antrim so there is not too much pressure on the others than to win their games against those three. It will depend after that what stage teams think they are at a few weeks before championship, or if indeed they might see winning a league as an end in itself with the hope that that will create a momentum and that it doesn't take too much out of them, especially on the injury front. Dublin are undoubtedly in the latter camp. If we are still in with a chance going into the last game I doubt Mattie would be looking beyond that. Others might. going to be interesting and fast year! Like most gifted hurlers was recipient of some Unwanted attention. Notably a blow from Gearóid Hegarty across the back in 2020 semifinal and a blow from Conor Gleeson of Waterford last year. League is used by most as a warmup competition for the championship. Galway under Shefflin appear revitalized and will take some stopping. Shefflin will bring the best out of them.
