Game was over after 5 minutes, giving Kildare that head start was criminal. What genius decided to leave McCarthy to get destroyed at half back? moodoo (Monaghan) - Posts: 441 - 20/03/2022 19:32:14 2405998 Link 2 |
The depressing thing is the Dublin game will be our all ireland final this year. Assuming we win it'll just about trump the mckenna cup success. Hoping for a big turnout tho and has potential to be a great spectacle MalsBalls (Monaghan) - Posts: 179 - 20/03/2022 20:03:58 2406012 Link 2 |
Is Niall Kearns injured or do they just not fancy him? When he debuted in 2018 he played every game and got better and better. Now he gets a half at most. It's also not clear to me who is playing where and why. PolicemanFox (Monaghan) - Posts: 158 - 20/03/2022 20:37:06 2406032 Link 0 |
Pure shambles, the players didn't perform but by god team selection never gave the players a chance. I felt sorry for McCarthy stuck centre half back being turned inside, when put in the forward line he proved yet again to be Monaghan's best goal scorer. Dessie Ward playing all league centre half back then move him to the forty for the most important game of the campaign. At one stage of the first half Conor Boyle seemed to be playing in the half forwards and Kieran Hughes was full back. shaggylegend (Monaghan) - Posts: 1928 - 20/03/2022 21:11:55 2406047 Link 3 |
This is a Kildare team going places for sure, Ryan, Rainbow, Doyle and Earley on the sideline a quartet of County legends is some influence on this young team. Seven of the recent U20 All winning team took part today. Persistence or the lack of it will determine how far they go. mhunicean_abu (Monaghan) - Posts: 1044 - 20/03/2022 21:35:17 2406058 Link 3 |
A TERRIBLE DOWN TEAM , that quote will be mentioned at every Down training from now to the C ship, it will be on the wall in the Clones changing room, NO team talk needed

What an inspirational move that would be to fire up the Down lads. "Boys, I want you to once again think about that quote, some fella on the internet said we are terrible". Niall85 (Monaghan) - Posts: 13 - 21/03/2022 07:16:56 2406070 Link 5 |
Relegated from Div 2 with one game to go. 1 point out of 6 games. Newsflash lad, Down are terrible.

Unfortunately, the Kerry performance wasn't the flash in the pan that Banty thought. The pan was flashing again yesterday. We were second best all over the field. We were lucky to only be 5 behind at the break but I did think it wasn't gone at that stage due to the breeze. It was over 10 mins after half time though. The goal gave a glimmer as there was plenty of time left, but Kildare responded to put the game to bed long before the final whistle. Kildare where very good yesterday all over the place we couldn't get near them big strong fast lads dat can kick a score which we dont hav a big performance needed sunday but i think are D1 status is gone for a while. 5 or 6 big men will walk away this year which leaves a big hole in the dressing room for the young lads coming through but anyways support this monaghan up and down this fair land and wat ever division they are in up the farney Lad79 (Monaghan) - Posts: 52 - 21/03/2022 15:43:26 2406261 Link 0 |

Yet they dumped us out in 2017- and fermanagh in 2018-dont count your chickens before they hatch. Championship is championship. If dublin dont relegate monaghan next week, I couldn't stomach another killarney 2010 or Galway 2021. Banty taking the plaudits, papering over cracks. This team needs a big rejig like armagh, like kildare have done. Division 2 won't be the worse place in the world to start that, but a new man at the helm is needed and more players needed to be blooded, I'm amazed more of last years u19 team aren't being used. Colin Walsh won an all star in defence, why not try him there? Can anyone please explain why this isn't happening? It's still not out of reach that thus team could put together a run in the championship - but a mass is exodus of players you would think is coming next winter. Monaghan football at senior level is entering a rebuild stage. 222 (UK) - Posts: 691 - 21/03/2022 22:00:18 2406349 Link 2 |
I feel sorry for our team. The day Banty was taken back was not a good day so what do people expect? Some of the positional switches on Sunday were highly questionable. border Gael (Monaghan) - Posts: 894 - 22/03/2022 08:58:38 2406353 Link 3 |
Totally agree clear the decks and go again fresh bodies and fresh opposition in div 2 in a way getting fed up with div 1 every match is a battle and if your at 85 per cent u get hammered ie kildare and kerry the team is going to lose 6 to 7 players one way or another so get the young lads in now it was done before in 2011 and worked out the best afterwards so why not muineachain abu

I actually thought the experiment of McCarthy at wing back worked ok prior to Sunday. It gave him more space and freedom. But in previous games he did not need to defend that much. Donegal never got him turned and in that game he was an out and out attacking wing back. Kildare exposed the issue with this though. When a half forward gets a run on him then it shows that he isn't and never will be a defender. He showed in the second half that he still has that instinct for a goal when he is nearer the posts. So experiment should be over as the dubs will run at him if he is in the half back line on Sunday. Tim_NicebutDim (Monaghan) - Posts: 347 - 22/03/2022 10:11:16 2406380 Link 1 |
The set up is v strange. You have Corey and McCague both monaghan football men then buckley and sheedy the Hollywood signings who seem to add very little and over it all you have Banty who really is just a soundbite manager at this stage playing the media game. The team has defenders playing in the forwards and forwards playing as defenders with players like kearns who should be in his prime and Mulligan who should be part of the future just being used off the bench. I agree with your post monaghan could pull it off Sunday and go on a run over the summer but it all has the feel of a ramshackle set up which isn't going to win anything major. Banty will string it out to the last and ask for an extension to rebuild next year in div 2 and he will probably get it as county board seem to be in thrall to him. Depressing times which may end up in div 3 and a new manager coming in then for the rebuild.

100% agree with this. Its been monaghans downfall in recent times unlike a tyrone or donegal assuming we just have to turn up and teams like down and fermanagh will just roll over for us as we might be higher up the rankings than them. Championship football is definitely not like that. Respect your opposition no matter who they are.

Given the fact that we've drawn the worst team in ulster in down and will easily beat them that will paper over some cracks.. however given the toxic atmosphere towards the current set up we need change regardless of what happens.. we are regressing at a rate of nots and god knows where we will end up under Banty… mick2007 (Monaghan) - Posts: 449 - 22/03/2022 13:44:41 2406473 Link 3 |
Let's not forget the supposed "expert" strength & conditioning coach in the set up. This guy was with Tyrone for a year and ran outta the place, but the high profile suited Bantys agenda of style over substance. What we are left with now is a flat, leggy team struggling with the demands of senior inter county football. When have we ever said a Monaghan teams looks unfit until this year? Reports I'm hearing out of the camp is players and certain coaches are at logger heads over training volume and player load, this along with the performances on & off the pitch represents a failed set up. I had hoped it wouldn't take a relegation for our Co. Board to realise money isn't everything but now Ill just be happy to see the back of this set up regardless of the short term cost of losing Div 1 status.
