I was thinking more from a GAA point of view. Why do the GAA want SKY involved ?

Fair point Tommy unless you're stuck in a contract. 2 months on NOW for €30 though. Not a bad deal.

Money. The GAA claimed it was to help them reach a wider audience outside of Ireland. Not sure that it has. Maybe encouraging some tourists to fill some empty seats at hurling or football games when things get back to normal could also get them some wider interest and revenue. Something more memorable than looking at cliffs or drinking left handed pints in Temple Bar.

There was a win-win scenario for everyone when the TV rights were arranged back in 2014 and could have been used in all deals since. Give Sky non-exclusive rights to the championship. That way, the overseas emigrants would be catered for. And here in Ireland all the games would still be free to air. And the GAA would still have got money from Sky. A win win all round.

Sky would never have accepted non-exclusive rights for live games. Virtually all the live sport they cover is exclusive.

I know loads of the older hurling generation who could not see the match today as it was not televised on free to air. All these people are good hurling people who have done a lot over the years for the game. They could not attend today because of the limit on attendance and some are are cocooning. They love hurling and these matches are sold to sky which in my view is terrible especially as these older generations have gone through so much in this pandemic. The gaa is made up of nearly all volunteers and this is what they do to them !

There was no shortage of tickets for Croke Park today. They were on general sale nearly all day yesterday. There has been so much absolute rubbish talked in the last few days about how disgraceful it was that todays games weren't on RTE etc. Firstly, let's address one myth: Contrary to popular belief, watching RTE isn't free. We just have to pay for it in a different way, through TV licences and general taxation to pay the grossly inflated salaries of irritating presenters. At least a person has a choice whether they want to pay for Sky or not. When it comes to RTE we have no choice, it's forced upon us to pay for it. Secondly, a person without sky sports could have bought a day pass on nowtv for a tenner and saw all 3 games on sky today. €3.33 per game. You'd pay more for a coffee. There is an unbelievable sense of entitlement when it comes to paying for things GAA related. The GAA has a great product that multinational sports companies want to broadcast around the world. Why shouldn't we be welcoming that with open arms instead of cribbing. There has never been as many games available to watch on TV thanks to things like the Sky and Eir Sports deals. And it's not like all of the Sky Sports money goes into the pocket of some multimillionaire investor, the money is used to develop the organisation right across Ireland in every town and village. Onfor15 I think the point that is being made is the older members of the population just wouldn't know anything about getting sky or going about paying for these matches..I saw the Kerry game advertised earlier it's on sky to which means that both their games so far are on sky..with RTÉ the majority pay license fee and watch whatever is on..with sky its a basic package anything else is extra..I would not get it but I'm lucky a relation has it and I saw limerick game..I'd agree with earlier poster Nicky English is painful.. I think it is you that are shortsighted. You are presuming that everyone in Ireland has access to reliable broadband and have the know how to set this up in the first place. Again the likes of yourself don't think nor care about the older generation in rural Ireland whos highlight of the week is watch the hurling at the weekend. In a pandemic the gaa should have managed to get these on free to air for this championship. I was talking to a few people earlier today and everyone of them did not get to see the games, three top hurling games and none on free to air, these people live and breath hurling. And in relation to the tickets today! Some of these people are vulnerable and while the risk is probably low in the stadium how are they supposed to get there ?? Cram in on the dart or something. Or maybe they should cycle the 120 miles ?? These people do not have sky as it is pricy for pensioners and they don't have an interest in soccor. So think before you get up on your high horse and start looking at the bigger picture !

RTÉ preferred to show the Irish Open and the rugby international against Japan. They wouldn't have shown all three hurling matches anyway. Get yourself a day pass for NowTV for a tenner. You can watch the games instead of moaning

Totally agree with you ! Whether we like it or not the status quo is here to stay. During this health crisis how have people watched club and county league games - by paying for them on local TV networks usually facilitated by County boards. Where has the money gone to... the TV networks and county boards ! The GAA have sold the games to the highest bidder who guaranteed that those abroad could also access them in packages . We can take the same packages here. We are in 2021, not 1960. We need to stop moaning and get on with it. GAA people pay to get into games, pay for local games on local TV and will be paying for games on SKY as well. That's progress. Not too long ago when we just had a few games per year - and they were in black and white !!!!
