Our competitive games in World Cup and Euros have to be free to air on terrestrial TV - they are one of a number of events that are ring-fenced - Six Nations among the others. We are talking here about EXTRA GAA games on TV. To those here who think that RTE should be the only provider, would you be happy to accept less games shown then? Because that's what would happen. Also, whilst I have no reason to doubt that Jack Boothman was a fantastic GAA man, his opinions on TV rights expressed in 1994 or thereabouts, are quite frankly irrelevant in 2021. James Nowlan (the man who Nowlan Park is named after) was the longest serving President of the GAA at 20 years. He presided over the introduction of the Ban in 1905. In hindsight, a ridiculous rule which was to last until 1971. Should we return to the days of the Ban, just because a GAA president endorsed that view? Just because a GAA president expressed a certain view, or endorsed a certain policy, does not mean they were correct regardless of how many people they may have had in agreement with them. First of all there is a big difference between an "opinion" and a commitment, a huge difference. In any case the point isn't about extra games, nobody questions that. You make a big jump from 1994 to 2021, neither year is relevant but it helps your narrative. If you read the article it's clear that pledges were made by a number of presidents right up until 2012, just two years before the deal was done that exclusive rights to GAA matches would not be sold to Sky. The issue isn't that the rights were sold, the issue is that the GAA hierarchy never kept their word. Your mention of the ban would only be relevant had the GAA president at the time continually pledged not to bring in a ban and then done the exact opposite. Who needs Sky when you can and have a service like GAAGO which is owned jointly by the GAA and RTE ? Why line the likes of Rupert Murdoch's pockets or whoever owns Sky now when you could instead put money back into the GAA and the national broadcaster ? Iptv is the way to go for a product like the GAA, watch what you want, when you want and wherever you want without having to buy a "package" and are possibly tied to a contract. I got the GAAGO it would be valve for money if their streaming worked properly alot of games i have watched on GAAGO are constantly freezing and buffering.
