Ah O'Rourke has had his day too, and a long time ago at that.

In my opinion the coverage has been very good with very good commentators overall and their guests adding good analysis as the games are being played. The studio anchored by the 'old reliables' in both codes is also overall very good with pundits not afraid to go beyond script as O'Rourke and Shefflin did of late. That is refreshing! TG4 haver announced a 20 game schedule mainly underage for the next few weeks. Looking forward to these ! carlowman (Carlow) - Posts: 1875 - 08/12/2020 16:26:25 2320316 Link 1 |

Maybe they just wanted to give Donal Og Cusack more time to vent his expert knowledge on all things hurling. He seems to be involved in all the top games while far better analysts only get the occasional gig. And RTE have also given him the Friday morning radio slot formerly done by Michael Duignan. He now seems to be RTE's golden boy - heaven help us!

He was on the Sunday game live show then he was on the highlight show a few hours later. I've never seen that happen before in the 25 plus years I've been watching it

I used to enjoy watching Spillane and brolly and ó Rourke go at it,, it was an integral part of the show,, I would personally fancy entertainment over in depth tactical analysis,,heat maps, stats, arrows going on every direction,, its all good but I prefer a row,, nowadays I don't even really pay heed to the pundits. In my opinion, Moloney is completely biased when Dublin play. You won't have any meaningful discussions at end of games because you have a poor presenter at the helm of the sunday game now and dismisses any chance of a flare up, not like in Lyster's day. RTE missed a trick not giving the job to Evanne Ni Chuilin, Jackie Hurley or Dara O'Cinneide. It has become a borefest like the football itself. republicofcloone (Leitrim) - Posts: 375 - 16/12/2020 15:34:58 2322911 Link 2 |

I don't think Marty Morrissey is a great commentator. He in my opinion does not have a good knowledge of the GAA. He is more show biz. galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2614 - 17/12/2020 09:42:38 2323066 Link 0 |
I fully agree galwayford. His knowledge of hurling, in particular, is very poor. He regularly displays an ignorance of the rules. I've lost count of the number of times he declares it's a line ball "because his foot was over the line" (it doesn't matter where the foot is if the ball is kept in play). Likewise, when a free is moved forward by the referee Marty always tells us it's for dissent, whereas most of the time it's because a player prevented a quick free being taken. I accept hurlers are not always easily identified because of their helmets but there is no excuse for confusing players who hold the hurley differently. For example he has referred to Niall O'Meara as Brendan Maher, just because they both wore white helmets, but their hurling styles are completely different. And his knowledge and understanding of camogie is even worse. Sadly, Marty seems to be RTE's favourite commentator so we're stuck with him for a long time, I suspect.

For every RTE match, there is a presenter three pundits, a commentator and a commentator. RTE Radio almost duplicate it. All being paid.the station is broke apparently. One commentator is surely enough. Micheal O Hehir and Muircheartaigh did it for years on their own. Occasionally when you stream a soccer match there is only one. A skilled commentator does not need an assistant, especially one who is adding nothing to it (ie every RTE co-commentator ). bennybunny (Cork) - Posts: 3917 - 18/12/2020 10:47:48 2323359 Link 1 |
rte doesn't have skilled commentators, Padraig Lodge maybe.

Ok. That is subjective. Objectively speaking, one commentator should suffice.

Exactly. You don't see the BBC doing this ....
