Limerick V Kilkenny

Replying To bloodyban:  "If Limerick can avoid giving Kilkenny soft goals then they will be very hard to stop. The half back line will have their hands full with Walsh ,TJ and Mullen. I can see TJ sitting down ontop of Hannon to stop him setting up attacks. Byrnes will need to be tight and avoid going 'over the ditch' after being sold a dummy like the one he bought too easily in the Munster final by Callanan.
What should be the focus is putting away any early chances. Look at the goal chances butchered by Cork. They need to be all taken. Limerick cant make a hero out of Murphy again this year. Iv great faith in the full forward line and especially Mulcahy and Casey in shooting for goal. Gillanes attempts at goal are still poor, usually high or else straight at the keeper. If Limerick are anyway under par they will be punished but Kilkenny have weak links in the fullback line and halfback line"
I disagree on TJ. Why would you put him on top of Hannon? I'd do the opposite. Try get him into space and try force hannon to come out on him.
When TJ is marked closely and followed he's nearly always held scoreless. He does damage when he gets loose.
Kk over the years are masters at creating space and having lads get out loose for an easy handpass and score. They certainly won't play into Limericks hands like that.

I think limerick are capable to keeping kk to no goals and should outscore them from play too. Having said all that, the confidence in limerick this year is based on a performance against tipp. We seen the last day how flat tipp have become and we've seen so many teams fail to reach the heights the following year after winning an all Ireland. Limerick are definitely favs for the all Ireland but this game will tell us a lot more

Yeah I'd just try and negate Hannon if I was Kilkenny. Hes the main passer on the whole team. But I take your point, if Kilkenny get a run then they ll score more heavily than anyone..and Keeping Reid scoreless would be great.
.. limerick have still alot of improving to do. I keep going back to the sidelines but they are terrible so far this year. Please dont telegraph a 'short one' and be aware of the oppositions quick one. Also the problem of wides was largely solved in the Munster final. Keep it that way..what loaded wides in Croke Park would be a killer.
I remain very positive. I dont see Kilkenny having the wheels to stop Limerick running through them. I see a bug midfield performance and I see Gillane finally taking his goal chances.

Cody will leave TJ Centre forward for the whole game and i can really see it disrupting the Limerick game plan. Hannon will have to mark him i think. Kilkenny will play with 6 forwards and if they want to have Hannon loose hey will have to bring back O'Donoghue or put Morrissey across on him which will either open up space for another Kilkenny forward who'll need minding or allow them to play a sweeper which could really effect Limericks diagonal ball game plan they play so well. Putting O'Donoghue in a man marking role also takes away his ability as a ball winner and distributor and the short passing possession based way they play in the half back line.
Interesting but i think they'd be giving up too much if they do decide they want Hannon as the sweeper.

I think Cody will trust TJ to influence the game no matter who is on him at centre forward. O' Hanlon in the Leinster Round Robin match was the last person to effectively cancel him out of game. I know he didn't score against Cork the last day but he was immense in winning frees, dispossessing backs and setting up scores.

Very difficult to write off any Kilkenny hurling team. Think back to 1982 when Cork were overwhelming favourites for the All Ireland final & Christy Heffernan produced a fine performance to help beat Cork by 11 points. Even in more modern times we played Kilkenny in the 2017 U21 All Ireland final and Limerick were miles better on the day but only put them away late on.

50/50 to be honest.

i can't see anything other than a Limerick win unfortunately. going for 2-25 to 2-20

why?
- Limerick physically way stronger than KK.
- KK being over-rated from Cork game: Cork were really abysmal if we're being honest
- Limerick have the better hurlers
- last year's final margin wasn't a true reflection of Limerick's dominance: Eoin murphy was unreal: okay referee made 2 scandalous decisions at the end for tackles on Donnelly and Deegan (Limerick scored off the deegan incident) but KK did brilliantly to hang in there for so long.

I actually think Limerick are 8-10 points better than KK but banking on the never say die attitude to keep us in it ( a bit like the galway game in nowlan park)

This year has memories of 1997 for me:
- WX beat KK in Leinster
- Tipp to beat Wex in semi
- KK to have a memorable1/4 final win but come up short against a physically more powerful munster champion
- Limerick to beat Tipp in a very close final.

If somebody gave me 50 euro to bet for them every week (I dont have it as I am a student, but I won't be betting 1k every year anyway) I would back Kilkenny all of the time.
But I still think Limerick will have too much for them, and whoever wins our semi final to be honest.

I think Limerick will go for goals early on, try kill the game off. If they leave Kilkenny in it going into the last 10 minutes it could go either way.

Must say I'm looking forward to the weekend of matches on the tele. Something to look forward to on both days.

Yes, my point exactly. That's why if Tipp are lucky enough to get there I'd be putting Noel McGrath at centre forward. Having said that Limerick are excellent at marking space and each man covers their area really well. TJ has been excellent in a lot of games this year but has struggled badly in others. I genuinely can't see a way KK can win this game. If Limerick can create space in their own forward line then they could run up a huge score against that KK backline. BUT back to backs are hard won and it'll be interesting to see if the hunger is there from Limerick They can't have become invincible that quickly.
However, Limerick by 6pts + for me

Yes indeed and can one imagine what it could be like if this game goes to extra time, as both Semi Finals did last year.

Looked at the cost of hotels in the capital. 200 euro for a decent one. That is 47 pints in my local, or maybe 40 leaving room for pink snacks & cheese 'n onion. There is the option of a dorm with a shared bathroom for 60 Euro for the night but you'd need to sleep like Chuck Norris in Delta Force - one eye open and ready for battle.

Long story short, I agree with Ballydalane. The time is no good for people with families, it is no good for anyone wanting to socialise or to drive a significant distance back to places in Limerick/Kilkenny where your only hope of a late pint is if the local Guard is snaking in for one.

Were I to be talking to GAA officials it would be the same as I said to a mate of mine after he met a girl in the sin Bin in 2007.

WHAT WERE YOU THINKING HORSEBOX?

Would completely disagree with the comment on TJ Reid struggling badly in any championship game this year.

Outstanding in first 3 games, held scoreless against Wexford in first game although he was still very influential. Leinster Final he was outstanding again. That dummy for the point in the second half was class. Against Cork held from play but I was at that match and he was brilliant. Probably scored 4 points from frees where he was fouled himself. Caught an amount of ball, set up 3-4 points and his hooking and blocking was second to none.

Saying all that Limerick +6 is there or thereabouts where I think the score will be at also if Kilkenny can't contain Limerick. Both teams tend to start slow, a purple patch in this game needs to put 6-8 points on the board.

What was the thinking behind the late start? Suits me fine as I'm going to both semi finals, but seriously unfair for those with kids.

No idea. I'm not bringing the kids cos it'll be near 11 agin I'll be getting home. And that's early compared to lunch Limerick fans or Donegal fans last year. Why not a double header or consecutive Sundays?

You're incorrect to say he had an influence against Wexford the first day. He had 5 possessions. Hanlon even gor forward to set up scores. The last day against Wexford he messed up 3 very easy scoring chances from Frees and play.
Having said that he should get more room
The next day and it'll be interesting to see if limerick have the physical players in midfield that will get in around him. He hasn't carried kk this season like he's being made out to be but if kk are to win he will need a big game.

Kilkenny by 3. Knock the cats at your peril, they are never beat. I think it's set up for them for reasons below:

1. Underdogs - A Kilkenny team with a chip on its shoulder are dangerous opposition.
2. Limerick playing after having a long lay off, might be off the pace.
3. Might easily be over confident after Munster final.

Double header is not a runner. Prob 55/60k for Lim/kk match and 65/70k for wex/Tipp. Regardless of the mad scramble for tickets, too much revenue to lose. Plus the minor grade gets a share of the spotlight which I'm all for.
Consecutive sunday's would be great but football needs it's media focus too.

There is never any complaints from other sports about evening games. It suits alot of people to have it a 6pm..and soak up the atmosphere in Dublin that night. And this thing about comparison with the price of pints..I know its tongue and cheek but come on...The amount of people drinking alcohol is dropping like a stone in society in general. I think it ll be great to have it on of a saturday evening ...and the kids can sleep on the way home unless you've designated them to drive you after your Pints of porter.

Nobody is knocking or writing kk off. People just think limerick are the better team at the moment. Saying you think limerick will win is not 'writing kk off'. That's how kk will spin it I suppose.
