Replying To Viking66:  "Trying not to think about a heavy defeat but the thought has crossed my mind. More than once too! As regards the fullback line the worry would be that when the ground hardens and the game speeds up do Conor and Niall have the pace to keep up with a fast corner forward. Probably the best position for both would be fullback, but for me Jippo has to start there . Another problem I'd have is their ball distribution forwards. Conor especially doesn't look up. The losing of the u20 final last year was definitely influenced by Conor, Darragh Carley etc running the ball into contact. They don't get the head up and don't play long hard flat stick passes. Shane I think has to start cornerback but again he's not a creator either. Damien centreback.
The worry watching the Offaly game was if you pick the lads you are mentioning above, all of whom played against Offaly, you aren't going to have anyone capable of playing a good ball to suit our inside forwards. It has to be quick, both hit hard and fast, but also hit in straight away. With Carty away Devitt and O Hanlon are probably the next best lads at playing that kind of ball. Conor Foley tended to overcommit when playing wingback, and we leaked scores because of it. Think Phelan got 1-3 off him. I think if he's not going to play fullback as he is now and playing very well there, I'd put him midfield where he plays for his club. Hard to know where best to play Charlie. He's still only young, and plays with great intensity, but is very frustrating when comes to choosing the right option at intercounty. At club he has more time to process things and makes better choices so hopefully he will improve as he plays more.
Up front Oisin Foley plays with good intensity, covers ground, has great workrate, can catch a high ball, and doesn't hit many wides. Not sure we have a better wing forward if he's fully fit. Hopefully Jacko could improve his catching and workrate as he's excellent otherwise, and hopefully Mark Byrne can step up and he's only 23. Mogie is just pure class in every way hard not to start him if he's fully fit. Kevin might be best midfield. Dunbar is very fast, skilful too, but fades in and out of games. James Byrne has looked good and plays with the head up but is still only 23. Tucker likewise is improving and is only 22 this year. Seamus is 23/4 also. Cian is 21 this year. These lads all could, and will, improve as regards S and C as time goes on, and will hopefully be nailed on starters when they get to 26. Come championship you would worry will the lads who have played so far be able for the increase in speed of the game. Obviously the more they play at Senior Intercounty level the quicker they should be able to hurl, but to expect a raft of lads in their 1st or 2nd year to make that step up straight away is a big ask. Only really exceptional lads can do that in this day and age."
'Seamus is 23/24'….that Seamus Casey you mean..? He was u21 in 2018 so that'd make him about 27.

Correct. He was born in 97

Matt is not a full back.

Good news about Jacko all right.

Meanwhile, piece here about how Paudie Foley will be playing in the Melbourne Sevens this weekend:

Posted that link a few hours ago and they didn't put it up. Apparently the lads take it way too seriously for the standard that it's at.

Apparently that Sports Joe article isn't accurate-
"The journalist is mixing up 3 competitions here. Pearses 7s is a club comp and only hurling. The garryown 9s is all football played last weekend. 2 top competitions but the main one is the Australasia state championships not on till October, it's like an inter county championship down here l, it's a 4/5 day competition. Some serious players involved"

Fair enough. I just stumbled across that piece while browsing this morning. Main point anyway is that if we didn't already know it, he'll be nowhere near our county squad this year.

I hurled in oz in 07/09 I can tell ya the standard is quite high. In Sydney hurled with inter county lads in Perth I hurled with lads who won club all irelands with ballyhale centre back for tulleroan and limerick intermediates. We were tidy it was the wexford lads who hurled junior b let us down. The oz life is unreal and I can't blame him

I hurled in America and the standard was unreal.

Nearly everyone involved had hurled county at some level

My only overseas tale is how I played football in Toronto while spending a summer there during my college days (way back in the early 90s!).

I wasn't expecting the standard to be very high, and in truth, that was the case for some of the players (like me). But others there had either already played county or went on to do so. One of them even played in an All-Ireland Final a few years later.

It will be interesting to see the shape of the team for Sunday. Hopefully we can go in there with all guns blazing. We have a score to settle with the banner boys after last year's humiliation.
This is a big step up on what has gone before but I feel that the younger lads are improving all the time. The inclusion of some more of the regulars will help in providing balance.
Still it's hard to see us beating the munster men even without Tony Kelly.
The big question is will we be competitive.
While a narrow loss would not be earth shattering, it would build confidence for the remainder of the season.
Guys like Corey Dunbar Byrne, Eoin Ryan, Cian Molloy, Conor Foley, James Byrne, Niall Murphy have impressed me to date. They are by no means the finished article yet but they have huge potential. They are blending well into the setup and with more gametime at this level will blossom and grow in the years to come.
Verdict for Sunday--- Clare to win by 2 points.

Heard somewhere that Wexford sent a file into the GAA claiming 15 fouls were missed against Offaly, also heard that the assessor apologised to Wexford in response
