Id like to see a mix of youth and experience . It's going to be a big physcial challenge against Clare and we will have to be able to compete. Id go with the following team presuming only players who have played in league so far and Laois game Saturday are available to start. Duggan ( Deserves his chance his puckouts are v good and he is a good shot stopper) S Reck C Foley Hanlon ( Needs game time he is still a leader for us) Donohoe D Reck C Molloy Hearne Dunbar J Byrne Chin K Foley Corey Byrne Dunbar ( Roaming third midfielder) T Kinsella ( Think he could do damage in at full forward) Casey ( Has done well on limited possession hope he keeps up early season form) Afinestick (Wexford) - Posts: 999 - 19/02/2024 13:04:42 2526941 Link 0 |
-Duggan/Lawlor -Reck/Murphy, C Foley, Dooley -O Hanlon/Casey/Eoin Ryan, Reck, Patsy -Devitt/Hearne, Byrne Dunbar/Jack doran/Carley -K Foley/Mahoney, Chin, Mark Byrne/James Byrne Dunbar/Tucker, Casey/Lawlor, Doyle/C Byrne. Possible subs are after the hyphens/. If Eoin Ryan or Paudie Casey come on for Matthew then they'd swap with Donohue who'd go out wing back. I'd like to see what Cathal Doyle and Mark Byrne look like against better opponents. That halfback line should have more like the size to deal with Clares big half forwards, and all 3 are capable of playing low hard fast ball in front of our fast inside forwards, something the backs selected against Offaly seemed unable or unwilling to do. Also Devitt, Donohue, O Hanlon and Dunbar to get more minutes into them. With that team we have 1 or 2 more experienced lads in every outfield line. Not as many as Clare have but I'd be guessing that's all that are match ready. Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 16146 - 19/02/2024 13:06:04 2526944 Link 0 |

Are Mac , Rory or Jippo likely to feature if they didnt play against Laois Saturday. Id expect Hanlon to possibly start we need his experience with so many out. Good to see Devitt back also

Hanlon and Devitt can both play quick low hard 40 yard passes onto a tablecloth. That's what we need with our inside line. Patsy should be able to do the same given encouragement. He's certainly skilful enough.

Is it a worry that the likes of ROC , Jippo, DOK, Liam Og , Oisin Foley Mac could be heading into the championship with very little competitive matches behind them or are we better having them fresh and raring to go. The first 2 games Dublin at home and Antrim away will define our season 2 wins is essential . Afinestick (Wexford) - Posts: 999 - 19/02/2024 15:30:56 2527010 Link 0 |
Think we need to go with whatever management think is strongest available on Sunday given you'd be nearly certain we'll have no Liam Og, Dee, Oisin Foley, Conor Mc and ROC, add in potentially the 2 suspensions and if Jippo didn't play at all last weekend against Laois I couldn't see him starting but being in the 26 possibly the best scenario. We also have a weekend off the before the Waterford and Cork matches so fatigue shouldn't be a concern. TerribleFootwork (Wexford) - Posts: 1760 - 19/02/2024 15:50:18 2527018 Link 0 |
We will have to wait and see will they be back for any of the 3 remaining League games. Not sure how important it is for them to be back for them. There's a good gap to Leinster after them too, unless we make the semi finals and/or final. There's 2 months between the Clare and Antrim games.

I don't think so t be honest. Except Foley maybe, they're players of the pedigree that they'll influence games no matter what. The fresher the better. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3702 - 19/02/2024 16:49:10 2527045 Link 0 |
The hope is we can pick up 2 results out of our last 3 games in the league without them and we are going into championship then with momentum and older lads coming back fresh. I think most lads are expected back before the end of the league . It sounds like Liam Og ( due to lack of fitness only back) and Oisin Foley are the only two who may not feature in the league unless we reach a semi final which is probably unlikely after our result against Offaly

Regardless of our result against Offaly I think we were going to have to win 2 of the next 3 games to reach a semifinal. And if we win 2 of the next 3 we are likely to be in a semifinal anyway.

I see Jacko's red is being appealed but not Charlie's, interesting to see who gets picked for the goal on Sunday, if it's Fanning again that would definitely suggest management see him as 1st choice. TerribleFootwork (Wexford) - Posts: 1760 - 19/02/2024 23:50:14 2527114 Link 0 |
Hopefully Duggan gets a start

I hope so too he seems to have a confidence we've been lacking in goal. Interesting to hear Jacko's red is being appealed. We could do with his size and strength on Sunday I think. Hanlon and Devitt are available for selection but it will probably be the Waterford game before we see ROC , Jippo or Dwyer

It would be unfair to expect too much of Matt and Conor in their 1st game back

It was good to see them back against Laois but this is another step up. Looking forward to seeing how some of our young lads cope at this level on Sunday too. It will also be the first game where all the new seating in the covered stand should be complete. Hopefully a big crowd on Sunday

Hope so too. Management and players deserve it for the work they are putting in!

Word on the street is the big games are yet to come. Number 1 is still up for grabs. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3702 - 20/02/2024 15:59:23 2527220 Link 0 |
I guess every player is different but for most competitive games are key to build up match sharpness. It's certainly didn't work out last year for players to miss the league, likes of Chin clearly weren't fit in the championship. The standard of the league generally, and our performances, are higher than last year and Sunday should be a fair old test of where we are really at. I think most of the above are already fighting for places in the 26 for the Dublin game rather than starting 15. ROC and Ryan the two exceptions if fully fit. Of the players we haven't seen start yet in the League Mogie, Dee, Rory, O'Hanlon, Oisin Foley, Dunbar, Dooley, Devitt, Dwyer and Jippo would likely be starting if fully fit. Mac could also depending on his form and the set up of the team. Not sure if they will all be fully fit though.
