Alot of people getting excited for this one. Tradition, clones, monaghan ambushing donegal in the past, a resurgence of monahan this year all fueling those sentiments. However, facts are facts, donegal are superior around the middle by a good bit, and are comfortable up front with some excellent forwards. As for a starting team, it goes without saying Lavelle starting is crucial but unlikely. Louis Kelly's loss is a big one for a key area too. Assuming the worst on that front I'd go Beggan Byrne Duffy Wylie McBennett Ward McCarthy McPhillips Mohan McAnespie Bannigan McNulty Mooney Woods O'Hanlon Very difficult to counter Donegal's size around the middle so extra presence from McBennett or Wilson will be needed for Langan or Thompson. McPhililps could come close to breaking even on McGee with Mohan on McFadden. Nothing simple for Monaghan there. Only man left for Murphy is Kieran Duffy- once more into the breach Kieran. McAnespie and McNulty could do on Mogan and McHugh. Young Moor is a class act and will be hard to contain, so too Gallen once you have O'Donnell and McBrearty sorted! Monaghan haven't scored enough from full forward lines- I'd gamble on Mooney or Irwin and try to squeeze another Drogheda-style performance out of Woods. If Jack and Garland start together then Donegal will overrun Monaghan. Monaghan need to keep O'Hanlon out of traffic but that's exactly what Donegal will attempt. Then need huge impact from Irwin, Garland, Jack off the bench, with Wilson, McCarville and O'Toole to fix the cracks further back. Performance is everything here, let's not be under any illusions, Donegal are serious candidates for an All Ireland, losing to them at this stage would not be the end of the world. However I believe if we attack hard for the full game we could very well cause an upset Monaghan need to develop and build on their momentum and the game plan that they have progressed through the league I heard one on a podcast advising that we put 11 behind the ball and our best chance to win was to win ugly. To hell with that s*, thank god we have moved on from this, and perhaps the media could do us all a favour and do the same. Donegal been talked up everywhere in the media and probably rightly so but I do feel monaghan are quietly confident under it all there is plenty of experience in the team plus a few newbies which is good this is where we're at our most dangerous when we're written off and there backs are not particularly impressive and will foul there no 6 is not mobile and can be rounded pretty handy which could open up for plenty of scores watched donegal v galway in last years semi and donegal v derry 2 weeks ago and they can be very static at the back but there bench is strong and if monaghan are going to beat them the harm needs to be done before there bench is emptied as for langan mcgee and Thompson they don't have good engines and can drift in and out of matches which won't work on Sunday who would i rather meet on sunday tyrone or donegal and i would say donegal but they aren't all ireland favourites for nothing quietly confident and the pressure is on donegal Farneyblueandwhite (Monaghan) - Posts: 54 - 18/04/2025 15:55:02 2602616 Link

There seems to be a lot of hype about Donegal (rightly) and their fans are certainly confident. Bit like Derry for the last few years, but with more pleasant fans. This is a good chance for Monaghan to really test themselves and see where they're at. A win for Monaghan and they show they're heading in the right direction. Any sort of loss will be damaging. I expect it to be physical and hope Monaghan lay down a marker. Big men needed around the middle of the park and I can see Duffy maybe starting and picking up Murphy. Nor will 2023 when a donegal team somehow beat monaghan. If monaghan are leaning on 2013 to win, donegal will win pulling up. New players, new rules, different match. Some of the ladeens that come on here seem to have been to very few games and base their contributions on hearsay evidence from other posters. And on that thought the lad from the barstool in the United Parishes seems to have gone to ground. I hope Jim Mc has the training centre well fence off. I will be more than happy if Monaghan are with 15 minutes to go, in a position where they could win the game.. That to me would be progress, even if we were to lose by 8 or 10. No matter what happen, Monaghan football is in a good place. I picked Donegal last August to win this years All-Ireland and I don't see any reason to change now..
