The problem I see is that we came up against a similar style to donegal as in down in the league they defended the 2 arcs and we looked a bit lost and clueless and got turned over and over and down could have had 3 or 4 goals as we were very open at the back especially in the 1st half v down

Replying To Eddie the Exile:  "Massive test for the management team ahead. The first job will be to drive out any idea that a Div2 title is enough for the panel this year, and that it's Donegal's year so no shame in losing to them. If Monaghan find themselves 4 down after 50 minutes, what will the mindset be? Turn it on its head, Monaghan's desperation to progress is much much greater than Donegal's want. Not enough in itself, but we are going nowhere without at least that mentality.

Donegal are a fantastic collective outfit with superb individual footballers, huge panel depth, and an ability to play it any way you want to try them. Langan, McGee, Gallagher, Brennan and Gallen on the bench says it all. I'm convinced they left an All Ireland after them last year.

Lavelle is utterly essential. Big decisions on the inside forward line, Jack and Garland can't start together so you need Woods + 1. Dessie Ward close to goal? Need Plan B for when O'Hanlon inevitably gets crowded out for spells. As it stands, despite the scoring levels in Div 2, the main concern is getting enough on the board when the quality of opposition defence and midfield ratchets up significantly. There's multiple routes to victory for Donegal as it stands, but only a narrow path for Monaghan. Still."
Can't see either Garland or Jack starting. For monaghan to have any hope they need to match donegals marauding backs physically and keep them busy. Reminds me of Gallaghers derry at their best only donegal have way more depth.

We need to be careful not to be too reactive to Donegal's game. For me, one of Jack or Garland have to start, and there's an argument for both. Three of their backs have to stay back, so you don't need all your 14 outfield players to be engines and your best tacklers anymore. You do need to keep your scores coming very consistently, to be very accurate with your shooting, and for every player in your attack to be a threat. We have to play to our strengths. And that means being set up for a high-scoring game.

I also don't think zonal (arc) marking will work. I think there'll be too much space, and they'll just run through us. I'm hoping that Donegal defend like they did against Derry, but I suspect that they won't. I think they were letting Derry have more space and time on the ball because Derry have always had issues with their distance point taking. My guess is they'll push out on us, and try to not give us any time on the ball. I think personal responsibility and active, pressing defence, picking up runners, etc. is the only way now.

Only positive is that should shine a light on some light on the utter incompetence at CB level to allow that appointment in first place."
Same old whingers. Totally unacceptable, Paul missing those 3 goal chances one on one with the keeper and then going without their best player Bobby. Also it very unsporting for a manager to look at the big picture, and think ahead to next year and leave next year's manager with an experienced squad.

Best of luck to Monaghan, by the far the best team I've witnessed this year. You'll be there thereabouts with Donegal.

Attendance in athletic grounds was nothing short of pathetic for our future stars. 50 people? 3 goal chances in first half butchered. Feel sorry for the work PC and his backroom team have put in, they should be pressing Derry for the trophy this year.

Yes attendance looked very poor for a county game, a trend which has been setting in last few years with championship games, which reinforced last weekend, 3k at meath game, 9k at mayo game, 1k at Tipp game and 2k at Cork game. The all ireland semis rarely break the 50k mark.

I imagine the minor games same now they stand alone fixtures, although with new format can't understand why not played before senior games in ulster again, give the lads the buzz and experience.

Too many games is the problem with new format plus fact championship bang on top of league doesn't help, self inflicted by GAA, whose promotion of the championship leaves alot to be desired.
Example week of national league finals, 3 provinces held their championship launches, if I was Allianz sponsoring league I wouldnt be happy!!

Dick Clerkin previewed your game with Tyrone on Sunday, and he only mentioned your lads once, and no player by name.
It was top level trolling, subtle as you like. You could learn a lot from Dick.

I think your overthinking it there fella relax if you can't see that we're as wide open at the back well it must be a different match I was looking at also we are poor on the breaking ball these areas need tidied up if we're to make headway this year

Any word on Lavelle for the weekend ? We really need him back to go on murphy. Byrne will probably be tasked with mc brearty. Be interesting to see if Jack starts or if he will come on, there's no doubt this weekend will be a big jump up in quality but i am confident the lads will rise to the occasion. It goes without saying that Beggan will need a monumental game for us to win. Be interesting to see if Carey gets the nod again, its a big game for young lads like him and byrne. O toole will get the job on O baoil and mc nulty pairing up with mc hugh. I hope we can get a grip around the middle as i feel this is where the game will be won or lost, we need a big game from Gary and a big working shift from Mc carville. Fingers crossed its a memorable day, no doubt Clones will be buzzing.

Mccarville isn't mobile enough , got shown a clean pair of heels a number of times against Roscommon. Gary and Darren midfield maybe for me. Wylie will more than likely take mcbrearty can't see gb giving that task to the inexperienced Byrne although he has been immense. O'Donnell and O'baoil are the two key matchups for me, can't afford to get those ones wrong but not sure who I can see picking them up. Irwin in for Carey maybe for a bit of aggression in the back line? It's a tough gig picking the team this weekend.

Loving the confidence of donegal supporters and pundits for this one. They are favourites and rightly so but it's monaghan in clones playing as massive underdogs.v a county they'd have zero hang ups about . Clsassic ambush territory . The monaghan lads will be bouncing for this one after a great year so fat when they were completely dismissed by most pundits as a team on the slide. Zero pressure on them means a v dangerous animal so expecting one of those performances. Whether its enough have no idea but we have never feared any team in clones if the monaghan boys heads are right and they are in pretty decent shape so far this season. Monaghan ny two.
