Would it be possible to scrap the actual hybrid game, and play the series as one Aussie rules match and one Gaelic football match?….I think it'd make for a more interesting venture, without compromising either code.

I can't think of anything worse. An Irish team playing the best of the AFL at aussie rules? And a crowd of Aussies playing the likes of Brogan, Cavanagh & The Gooch at gaelic football? Both games would be routs to the extent that they'd make last Saturday night's debacle look competitive.

It wouldn't necessarily be the best of the AFL, it would be an Aussie team/panel made up of players best suited, or most capable, of playing a Gaelic football match (which is basically what successful Aussie compromise rules teams have done), as well as Aussie rules. It would be the same limited panel used for both games.
Maybe they would be routs, but given the number of Irish players playing or who have played AFL, and the fact that Aussie teams have been successful in the past at a hybrid game which is closer to Gaelic football, it would be interesting to see which team fared better at the others sport. Even if it happened just the once, wouldn't you prefer to see an actual international game of Gaelic football rather than the hybrid?

At the height of both seasons? I'm sure that would prove very popular among players and clubs/counties.

All I'm reading on here from the apologists for this experiment are increasingly impractical and nonsensical suggestions. It's time to give up the ghost, lads.

So Thomas you are saying that the GAA should be one of the
few sports were it is not possible to represent your
country? All the players want the series to continue-
should their views be ignored?

The players are not representing their country at gaelic football, so your first point is invalid. The GAA already has representation for elite footballers - it is called the intercounty senior football championship. If a higher level than that ever naturally evolves (i.e. a world cup of gaelic football) then great but, until then, I don't see a need to make up a new game simply so lads can represent Ireland at it.

Of course the players like it - I'm sure it is much better craic than slogging their guts out in club training, and the chance of a trip to Australia no doubt appeals also. Yes, in this case, I believe the views of those few players should be ignored. Reward them in some other way.

I attended the second test in Croke Park in 02 or 03, Ireland won that test but the Aussies just about won the series in an absolutely thrilling encounter. It was one of the wettest, coldest, windiest days of the year but the action on the pitch more than made up for it, and the atmosphere in a packed Croker rivalled any all Ireland final I've been to. Back then though the Aussies actually took it seriously and didn't treat it like a gimmick. As it stands now the series has no future until the Aussies decide to get their act together. I wouldn't pay in to watch that finish from the other night.

And how would you reward them T Clarke? Do explain. All Star tours reward players every year as a reward of the best players in the Championship every year, but they are not representing Ireland.

Its interesting that Tyrone fans are among the most
vocal critics of the series. In all fairness Tyrone
fans going on about the spectacle is a bit rich
with the dour brand of football they have played
over the last 10 years. They cant represent their
country at gaelic football cos it is only played
in Ireland so international rules is the only
way they can represent Ireland.

Brend no one is saying that international rules is
a subsitute for the GAA it is not.But it is only
two games a year so that the players can represent
Ireland. The link with the AFL will be lost if
there is no international rules.

I'd love to see Ireland give the aussie's a go at aussie rules. I think we would adapt quite well to the game. The obvious thing we would need to adapt to most is the ball. We're obviously not going to be as good as they can be, but why not give them a rattle. We are not professional, but we are certainly professional enough to train and adapt and apply strategies that are largely similar to our own sport. I've played compromise rules a few times, and I thought it was great but I simply didn't see much change bar the mark and if you didn't make the mark you had to move that ball quick or you would be done.

Failing that, I would recommend using a round ball in oz and an oval ball in Ireland to give advantage to the away team.

Don't you think the link with the AFL is to the detriment of the GAA, given the one way nature of the relationship. Your own county has suffered as much as any in recent years as a result, that doesn't sound like the kind of relationship that is beneficial to the GAA to me.

There is some truth in that Brend but if there
is no link with the AFL they may decide to
recruit even more Irish players if they are
not on good terms with the GAA?
