That is so wrong. How do you know what the Galway lads went through to get to that AllIreland? You have no idea so those lads wanted to win that game as much as Armagh and it would mean as much to their families as it does to the Armagh lads. You do realise the Kelly brothers lost their Dad when they were incredibly young.Conor Flaherty lost his Dad very recently and sadly. We all have back stories so don't assume that you know everything

If that's your only comeback I must be right.

Some very sore men on here. We're still celebrating with our fantastic president - great times!

Before the All Ireland final Jarlath Burns had seen 3 or 4 Armagh teams losing different finals and he made the speech all about the winning teams. Be fair to the man he praises the winners and on Sunday it was Armagh.

I know I wouldn't have the time to do his job. I probably wouldn't be diplomatic enough to do it either. You could say I wouldn't be able to do it, even if I wanted to. So, like I said, you should put yourself up for it next time around if you think its such a great handy number.

I see where you're coming from regarding players from every county having their own backgrounds, often involving bereavements and other emotional obstacles to cope with.
However it would be totally wrong and remiss not to acknowledge the unique tragic and discriminatory obstacles put in the way of the nationalist community in the six counties and often this sectarian aggression from the ruc and british army was directed at GAA activities. This had the effect (especially in places like South Armagh) of bringing gaelic games to the very core in an even deeper way.
Of course we all have bereavements etc and like you say when youngsters lose a parent it is so hard.
But when your pitch is commandeered by state forces as happened Crossmaglen and players are stopped in a targeted way going to matches and training and a young player Aidan McAnespie is shot dead on his way to training, yes I believe this does give GAA a greater gravitas to the communities involved.

I don't accept that the President of The GAA all of Ireland should be more emotional. He should be neutral. What if a president from south had done what he had done if Galway or any other southern team had won on Sunday. There would be uproar and rightly so.It is about giving respect to the losing team on the pitch. You are belittling the trials of one set of players against another and that should not come into it at all with regards to the president. If the Armagh captain had made that speech then it would be perfectly acceptable.

He gives up his day job so his job is the President of the GAA.Thats what he does.He gets paid what he would have gotten paid in the job he has given up for few years so it's not exactly sacrificing anything really financially. So yeah it not a walk in the park but it's not that bad either.

Replying To Alwaysencourage:  "No one said it was a slight. It was totally unprofessional. He should have enough self awareness as the president of tha gaa that there was a losing team on the pitch as well.It was disappointing that he didn't have more respect."
So it was unprofessional to praise all the work ALLGAA members do around the country? He was very respectful giving a platform to all those who do so much behind the scenes but rarely get mentioned. Truely baffling. You need to stop the navel gazing paranoid mopery.

Look I made no comment whatsoever on Jarlath Burns' speech. All I'm saying is that communities in the six counties have had to perseverere through various state led persecutions (including the murder of a young player on his way to training by an agent of the state) .in order to play gaelic games as their sport.
To acknowledge that this persecution has resulted in a deep spiritual embracement of their GAA identity in those communities in no way trivialises the efforts, trials etc. of others.
When the identity of a community is persecuted/threatened, that community will cling even tighter to whatever identifies it, e.g the GAA. So the bond between those communities in the six counties and their gaa clubs is different and that is not to belittle our own identification with the GAA or our clubs in the 26, we just didn't go through the same community experience that they did.

You don't know me and I am not paranoid either.I hope that if and when Roscommon are in an All Ireland and if they lose that the president has more respect for your team standing on the pitch.

This comes from a county whose manager realised very early that they never had much creative talent (Outside Mike Murphy ) so the way to win was to put everyone behind the ball and stop teams playing rather than trying to win

I'm getting the impression that some just don't like Jarlath because of where he is from. They try and dress it up as something else but they don't like Nordies full stop.

Not from me anyway

But since when do GAA presidents do these big long winded styled speech

Is this going to be a new thing?

There's a lot of political play here, I'd be very surprised if he's not taking his chance in front of a huge audience to set up a future political career for himself, he got all the diddly dee stuff covered nicely

Just my opinion.. good on him, but let's not dress up what could be a bit of savvy commentary as something that its not..

Presidents of associations generally say a few words and hand over the trophy

Burns went on a bit...
