Replying To Barrowsider:  "Yeah I think 12 12 12 sounds a lot better if doable, now that we are gone down this road we should embrace it fully and try give every team an achievable goal, a third tier would give the likes of Carlow waterford wexford wicklow etc a championship they could win at some stage. It would also as you suggest open the possibility of expanding it."
12, 12 and 12 is definitely the way to go. Maybe even the finalists of each grade get promoted replacing the worst 2 in the higher grade

All-Ireland Senior Football Championship

Kerry
Monaghan
Roscommon

Group C

An over reaction. 12 All-Ireland counties are in with a shout of provincial success. Half of that then are probably All-Ireland contenders. There has to be room for teams to establish themselves at All-Ireland level. That's where 13 to 16 fit in.
12 counties are also in with a fair shout of the Tailteann semi-finals. Half of that then are probably realistic Tailteann contenders who could go on for provincial success.
If counties finish in the bottom 4 of the league AND the bottom 4 of the Tailteann, there should be a route for them to join Kilkenny in an All-Ireland B. New York should probably enter the All-Ireland B as well and only enter the Tailteann if the win the All-Ireland B.

I definitely agree that 12 doesn't give mid tier counties enough exposure.
Maybe play the provincials and if a tier 2 or tier 3 county wins one then replace them with a tier 1 county in the top tier (very unlikely but it gives all counties a path to tier 1 and it maybe keeps the provincials some way relevant)

Let the dust settle on the 16:17 split. Time will tell if the Tailteann needs to expand to a third tier. To repeat my earlier point, counties in the bottom 4 of Division 4 and the Tailteann are consistently off the pace. These counties need access to an All-Ireland B.
I know Kilkenny competed in the All-Ireland JFC last year. That along with an All-Ireland B as mentioned needs to be re-evaluated.

I remember the latter years of the last All-Ireland B which descended into a fiasco by the end of the 1990's, with five people at one of the games and little or no public interest. If a similar third tier competition was devised to scoup up counties who have already been beaten out of two competitions at that stage and are more focused by then on returning to their clubs than drawing out a failed county season, the attendance at those games will be the guy on the PA system and the guy at the gate. What is it they say about not learning from the lessons of history?

I agree on letting the dust settle on 16:17 for a while.

The 3rd tier competition would be the only competition they would get. They wouldn't to play the top two.

Small clubs celebrate winning the junior. Small counties should get the same.

A third tier should be looked at for next year. When the Tailteann Cup was drawn up it was envisaged that it would a competition that most teams in Div 3 and 4 would have some sort of chance of winning. Now it is possible that Cork and Meath could play in the T Cup final, teams that won SAM in the past 20 years or so. There needs to be some cup that Waterford, Leitrim and New York would have a chance of winning.

I think Offaly have a great chance of beating Louth and if that happens I make Kildare favourites for the Tailteann cup.

I'd argue on their day in Carrick On Shannon Leitrim could easily turn over Meath.

Meath are gone so poor especially since the dinosaur took over.

We took Meath to extra time in Carrick last time we played them in the championship. Qualifiers 2005. Ollie Murphy scored an injury time point to send it to extra time.

12 teams are in with a good chance of making the Tailteann semi-finals. I wouldn't be rushing into a third tier just yet. Laois and Leitrim were pushing for promotion from Division 4. While they missed out on promotion, they can bounce back and have a good run in the Tailteann.

I know this won't happen - but if Kildare, Offaly and Down all WIN this weekend - the cat will be among the pigeons re the Tailteann Cup

The dust needs to settle on the 16:17 split but will there be high resistance against splitting the Tailteann in an 8:9 split? Both lower tier finals then could be played before both semi-finals.

Tailteann Cup
Seed 1. Meath, Cavan
Seed 2. Fermanagh, Limerick
Seed 3. Down*, Offaly*
Seed 4. Antrim, Wicklow
* Down and Offaly might still qualify for the All-Ireland if they make their finals.

Tier 3
Seed 1. Longford, Tipperary
Seed 2. Laois, Leitrim
Seed 3. Wexford, Carlow
Seed 4.Waterford, London
Tier 3 winner guaranteed at least Tailteann in the following year.

Brave efforts falling short of SFC Final 16
Limerick v Clare. Clare were favourites after beating Cork. Limerick put in a good effort. They could go on to have a good Tailteann.
Offaly v Louth. Offaly went to extra time. Not to be on this occasion. Brave effort though after knocking out Meath. Meath and Offaly might meet again in the Tailteann. Offaly can be in the mix.
Down v Donegal. Tough loss against Armagh but Down got a good win over Donegal.
Cavan v Armagh
Armagh was a tough draw for Cavan. Division 2 football should help Cavan qualify next year.

Seed 1. Meath, Cavan, Fermanagh, Limerick
Seed 2. Down, Offaly, Antrim, Wicklow
Seed 3. Longford, Tipperary, Laois, Leitrim
Seed 4. Wexford, Carlow Waterford, London

Meath, Cavan, Down and Offaly to make the Tailteann semi-finals? If some get drawn in the same group it's good news for the rest.

Tier 3 would only work if it were the bottom 8 + NY from the Tailteann group stage. I don't think counties will agree to another split.

A three tier championship should be 12, 10, 10. I don't think New York works as well. There's too much travel involved. Keep them in Connacht. They need to bring back the Owen Treacy Cup. Tailteann winners v NY home and away.

As before .......

Leitrim are 4th seeds, not 3rd seeds. ( unfortunately )
