I'd love to see Cavan play Meath in championship football, even if it's only in The Tailteann. Well, it can only be that now. For two counties that rarely meet in championship and which are in two different provinces there's a robust rivalry/bitterness between the two. Cavan, once kingpins in Gaelic football who had 4 AI won before Meath had their first (1949), would apparently be very loud and boisterous on their way home from Croke Park, particularly when passing through the royal county. I'm told that things would get really heated up in border areas like Nobber. Then after Cavan's 5th title in 1952, they stopped winning, and Meath took over with titles in 1954/1967/1987-88/1996/ and 1999. Meath beat Cavan by a point in the 1954 semi-final in what is said to have been quite a nasty affair. The shoe very much switched to the other foot. But the rivalry/bitterness remains to the present day.

If down beat Armagh the same happens and if both Offaly and Down win Cork will be in it.

Wow Meath and Kildare in the TC !! I think this would be good for the future status of the competition. It will give it higher profile and whoever wins it will have to earn it. Onion Breath (Carlow) - Posts: 1907 - 24/04/2023 09:19:09 2473057 Link 1 |

Cavan and Meath should be favourites to make the final. The prize of All-Ireland qualification will keep them honest. If Cavan and Meath have aspirations of provincial success in the next few years, they will want to be winning the Tailteann and challenge for the Division 2 title next year. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 10082 - 24/04/2023 09:19:16 2473058 Link 1 |

Momentum is huge in football and Meath definitely don't have that at the minute. They've won 1 of their last 6 games, and the whole set up is a bit of a mess at the minute so I wouldn't be too confident. Maybe the Tailteann Cup might be a good opportunity for them to reset against weaker opposition, and on paper Cavan and Meath should be the strongest. But I wouldn't get too excited., Meath are miles off at the minute. There still could be a few more interesting additions to the Tailteann Cup. Kildare are far from safe, they're obviously not going to beat Dublin so they need to hope Louth and Armagh do the business. Down too are likely to be in the TC, and Cork would drop into it also should Kildare, Offaly and Down make their respective provincial finals - probably unlikely at this stage. At the minute it looks like this courtesy of the Irish Examiner: 1st seeds: Cavan, Meath. 2nd seeds: Antrim, Wicklow. 3rd seeds: Laois, Leitrim, Longford, Tipperary. 4th seeds: Carlow, London, Waterford, Wexford. Preliminary quarter-finalists: New York Other confirmed Tailteann participants: Fermanagh, Limerick. To be confirmed: Cork, Down, Kildare, Offaly. So a lot still to play for and it looks fairly competitive, I'd have Cavan favs at the minute but that could change if a few others make the drop. hyperache (Meath) - Posts: 273 - 24/04/2023 10:17:00 2473100 Link 1 |

I think it won't be long before we have a 3rd tier, the 4th seeds and probably the 3rd seeds have as much chance of winning the TC as they do the all Ireland. The quarter finals will be interesting though, potential for a very good knockout stage

I agree. If fact I think they should go 12, 12 and 12 in the bottom. You have Warickshire, NY, and Kilkenny from the Junior. Add another British team or there was talk of Chicago fielding a team too to make the 36 skirge7 (UK) - Posts: 254 - 24/04/2023 13:37:24 2473245 Link 0 |

Louth can also play in the Tailteann if Offaly, Down and Kildare all win their semis.

Yeah I think 12 12 12 sounds a lot better if doable, now that we are gone down this road we should embrace it fully and try give every team an achievable goal, a third tier would give the likes of Carlow waterford wexford wicklow etc a championship they could win at some stage. It would also as you suggest open the possibility of expanding it.

I see what you mean, and I think it'll eventually become Senior/Intermediate/Junior like in the LGFA and could even see them spreading it out even more like having B teams for the counties that have big populations or big player pools so it would increase participation and competition- Dublin B, Cork B etc. I'm sure there are some brilliant players in Dublin and Kerry who don't get a chance because they're not just up to country standard. But every team in the TC is there on merit, and I don't think the seed 3 or 4 teams should be fearing the top seeds because there's not a massive gap. Be interesting to see how it plays out, hopefully we get some good games and some packed our provincial grounds - rather than a half empty Croke Park hyperache (Meath) - Posts: 273 - 24/04/2023 15:16:09 2473311 Link 0 |

I think the third seeds will give it a good go. Leitrim only lost out on penalties in last year's quarter-finals. If Leitrim finish second, they could get a revenge match against New York in the playoff!

12, 12 and 12 is definitely the way to go. Maybe even the finalists of each grade get promoted replacing the worst 2 in the higher grade All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Group A Cork Derry Dublin Galway Group B Donegal Kerry Monaghan Roscommon Group C Armagh Louth Mayo Tyrone Tailteann Cup Group A Antrim Cavan Sligo Westmeath Group B Down Kildare Limerick Offaly Group C Clare Fermanagh Laois Meath Tier 3 Group A Carlow Longford New York Group B Kilkenny London Tipperary Wexford Group C Lancashire Leitrim Waterford Wicklow Top 2 in each group qualify for knockout stage (best 2 group winners get bye to semi-finals) and the three teams that finished bottom of their groups are in the relegation playoffs All championships are competitive GaA247 (Cork) - Posts: 74 - 24/04/2023 16:38:17 2473366 Link 1 |
