Yes hurry up on the free taking especially when on the 21, 40 sec average per kick is about 20 too long

I love how the referee is being defended over this because it's in the rules but does anyone think in a big championship game he is going to throw around red cards and ruin the game? He did this because it's the league and it was at the end of the game so he made it about him. It's similar to the application of the black card, in any given game there will be far more black card worthy challenges that happen but will not be given by the referee because he does not want to ruin the game. The only positive from yesterday's farce was it happened at the end so the game didn't get ruined by the referee.

It took alot of guts for gough to do what he did and I think he was correct and hopefully it will happen more often.
This carry-on has been following tyrone and a few others for too long so hopefully this could be a turning point!

Ah here nothing much in the row. Four reds for Tyrone ridiculous. IMO Gough to blame. Let's far too much non tackling technique stuff go during a game until eventually it escalates.

Huge Agenda against Tyrone. Seen far worse melees during league games involving Dublin and or Kerry and Sunday game panelists will laugh it off then move on.

Good to see P. Harte actually stick up for himself.

Fair play to gough. These incidents are horrible to watch. Historically teams know that if evey man goes in it might one man each sent off or more likely a few yellows. There will be no all out schmozzle in the next match gough refs and a few more examples of using the red cards so freely will soon clamp it out fully.

Didnt see the game or the melee but the behaviour last week when Conor McManus came on was ugly and disgusting. Many of these players beat Tipp in the u21 final a number of years ago and anyone who was at that game would not be surprised that this type of ugly play is a feature of the Tyrone senior team now.

Replying To essmac:  "On a wider point, Tyrone has form in being woeful the year after they win it. Obviously, 04 was a tragic once-off, but in 05 and 08, Tyrone played very good football - but in each of the following years, they weren't even competitive - they were unacceptably poor. That could be playing out again.

You're right of course about those cards today - complete over-reaction. But yeah, there is a lot of smiles-through-gritted-teeth about Tyrone's win last year - they are seen as having spoiled the Mayo party, the nation's favourite, and that impertinence will not be quickly or easily forgiven. You can take it as read that Tyrone will be on the wrong side of a lot of iffy refereeing calls this year. Last weekend's performance by the man in black was a joke - the last minute winning score by Tyrone had gone over the bar well before the Tyrone forward collided with the Monaghan goalie. Brendan Crossan in the Belfast Irish News has no connections with Tyrone, and is primarily a soccer man; but he is an experienced all-round sports journalist who also understand GAA very well, and he was very scathing about last weekend's ref's obvious bias - as he put it, "the lack of consistency was alarming".

Although it will not make much difference - nowadays, you need a strong bench, and Tyrone are obviously having problems keeping people in the squad, even when those same impact subs are very much needed, and in the modern game, play a massive role. That weakened bench, plus Tyrone's by now habitual slackness in the year after they win, plus the inevitable fussy reffing, will ensure that this will be a short year for Tyrone."
Ah now, in fairness in 04 Tyrone still got to a quarter final. In 2006, I think Tyrone were missing practically half the panel of players through injury, at a time when there wasn't anywhere near the same depth. In 2009 we handily won Ulster and got to an AI semi, though not really turning up on the day. We didn't make another semi final for four years.

I would say that it was noticeable too that anytime space opened up in the second half or Tyrone were close to goal, Armagh dragged them down. Hence the seven 21 yard frees. The GAA should really bring in cumulative punishments like rugby. Black card if the same fouls are being done after a warning or a penalty given if numerous fouls close to goal etc.

Tyrone were getting closer and closer in the second half, but it was too stop-start for them to get proper momentum. Was getting pretty annoyed at McShane taking so long, he was that close all he needed to do was put his laces through it and move on quickly.

Build a bridge and get over the your beating . Takes two to tango. Did something happen in the Meath match? O'Rouke never said?

As a complete neutral I would say that nobody likes these "melees" - they are ugly and unnecessary. I usually agree with Colm O'Rourke but his comments last night didn't make sense. Predictably, he defended his fellow Meath man saying he was entitled to send off the five players because contributing to a melee is a red card offence. So why didn't he send off the other 20 players who were also contributing to the melee? Gough used to be my favourite referee but lately, as some other poster said, it seems to be all about himself, as was evident just a week before when he was responsible for the wrong sending off of the Kilcoo player. Will he apply the same standards when championship comes round? Would he have sent off five players if it was Dublin v Kerry, who have shared a number of "melees" in recent years?

Never mentioned that we were beaten unfairly. That's a pretty poor comeback!
Two to tango? Show me what McManus done to be surrounded by 3/4 players and being pushed around the place and guys laughing in his face last weekend? Do you think that's football? Nothing tough about that. Actually the opposite.

Hell lot worse row in navan. Absolutely disgraceful and the only one sent off for mallee was wait for it. Meath manager who didn't throw a punch unlike about 12 players who did.

To add balance to the discussion if anyone watched the melee in it's entirety it is clear to see Peter Harte was the one who started it all off with a shove on Burns. Burns went to the floor, got back up and approached Harte with his arms out open and Peter Harte tried to get him in a headlock. If Peter Harte kept his hands to himself none of this would have happened.

Dunno where this narrative of Gough being a good ref has come out of, he's always been average at best and dreadful at worst. And also has a tendency to be seen way too much, put it this way, when a ref is good or gets things right, you rarely here his name mentioned outside of a massive game like an all ireland semi or final or provincial final.

Yesterday perfect example of that, whole game long he missed several off the ball incidents and did nothing, then when things eventually boils over he thinks its gonna be solved by flashing cards randomly.
Don't see how anyone could watch that brawl and pick out a 4v1 situation involving either team, if he wanted to be fair it would be about 8 or 9 red cards for each team.

While I don't think the GAA are out to "nail" anyone, theres 100% an anti-ulster (or more specifically anti 6 counties) narrative with RTE. Spend about twenty minutes analyzing row between Tyrone and Armagh with chief hypocrite Colm O Rourke, then comes to Dublin V Kerry and the schemozzle is ignored. But that RTE hatred of anything not in the Republic been there for donkeys years.

All cards need to be overturned and get on with things, we don't want to see this stupid handbags crap in games but if you're gonna be giving red cards for it then every game in the country from now on will be playing 11 a side by half time.

When you compare RTE's coverage of the Dublin v Waterford match to the Armagh v Tyrone match it seems to be chalk and cheese despite both matches having incidents. I'm not sure anything bar that incident at the end of the Tyrone match was spoken about. Hopefully Sky start doing league coverage soon. RTE is a bitter, double standard, spent force of a broadcaster and has been for some time.

As opposed to the Mickey harte era when they were pure as the driven snow of course.

It was a nastier "melee" though. Headlocks and being wrestled to the ground along with the usual pulling and pushing. A deliberate pull down would be a black card anyway. It looked like the ref sent off anyone who pulled someone down.

its a pity he didn't send off about 10 from each team for the utter pathetic attempt at a row. All the hours these lads spend in the gym and not one of them could throw a punch...embarrassing

They'd probably be in custody right now if they did that in front of Gough to be fair
