Very poor opening quarter for sure but black card for visitors was a help and we were already getting back into the game before the red. Full back line under pressure early on and not helped with Maguire going off injured. But in fairness Jack and lads didnt panic and Nigel Harte was very good at centre back with Wallace going to full back who was also very good. McCartan started midfield where we were struggling for possession early on but he grew into the game and got a great goal. Up front we lacked a bit of structured play, it seemed to be all over the place. Heslin had a quiet 2nd half but showed his class kicking some crucial scores. Thought the debutants did well, particularly McCormack. Gardiner and Lynam quiet enough but worth another run. Next stop Portlaoise. Good second half performance against Wicklow after a slow start . 1-16 is a good score to run up especially given the weather conditions. Thought the debutants did well overall. Hopefully a bit of momentum going into next week v Laois. Lakecounty94 (Westmeath) - Posts: 57 - 31/01/2022 15:51:54 2397525 Link 0 |

Is Duncan not involved this year? Wasn't named in the squad last weekend. Brandon Kelly wasn't named either; perhaps he will be concentrating on U20's for this season. I think Gardiner will really develop into a big player at inter county this year and it will help massively with the Garrycastle influence on the management team. Brandon Kelly went off injured in o Byrne cup v Kildare . Would be a good addition back into the squad when fit.

Finbar coyne was a great prospect . Don't know if he is still injured. Rock and burke from tang Mattyreilly (Westmeath) - Posts: 153 - 02/02/2022 20:14:55 2398032 Link 0 |
Rock ?? Ah here come off it don't know what you do be looking at. Shane coughlan without a doubt tangs best player and an injury free Adam neary is quite good too don't think any of which are good enough for county though. Westmeath213 (Westmeath) - Posts: 332 - 02/02/2022 21:54:50 2398048 Link 0 |
John Rock was in with the county before and was probably Tangs most consistent player at centre half back last year. Shane Coughlan went off in the final with a bad enough looking injury. He probably deserved a call up but might not be fit. Duncan at full back is a big strong player but has been around a while and was in with the county hurlers for a few years.Tang have a very young team and you would imagine some of their younger players might get a chance with the u20's. Jack Keenan and Ronan Hanly being two who had a good intermediate championship. Finbar Coyne was Miltownpass best player last year. Kelly wasn't great by his reputation but I believe he was carrying an injury all through the championship and he could probably do with a rest. The previous year out of the two intermediate finalists only Robbie Forde of Moate was in or around the county setup last year and nobody from Tang so it's not unusual.

Does anyone know if there is any link to the Laois game. There doesn't seem to be any link on GaaGo either.

Not aware of any plans to stream game. Since covid restrictions have been eased it seems co boards want to get people in through the turnstiles. BigSur (Westmeath) - Posts: 1129 - 06/02/2022 09:37:16 2398511 Link 0 |
Took the spin down to Portlaoise this afternoon. Best team won but probably flattered by the 6 point margin. Nigel Harte started at centre back with Jonathan Lynamn dropping down and Sam McCartan at midfield. Tough conditions once again with a gale blowing and heavy occasional showers. Laois only have themselves to blame really in that first half with the wind, should have been much further ahead. It took a lucky enough goal from Loughlin to get us started - high ball in, everyone thought was going wide but Luke followed the ball in, wind held it up and he flicked to the net. Nip and tuck until maybe 10/15 mins left, we upped the anti and kicked several scores without reply to close the deal. Kieran Martin's late goal put the gloss on it. Can't really fault any of the players for the effort in those conditions. Jack's patience with Gardiner paying off, struggled to get on ball early on but scored 2 great points at a crucial time and will only get better as pitches improve. McCartan played well and is getting better with every game. Gardiner took his scores well alright and is a good option to have. Great to have two wins from two with hopefully a few players to come back. Luke Loughlin didn't look too happy to be taken off.

I agree that McCartan was outstanding today and that he is getting better every game. I also thought that Wallace, Jack Smith and Maguire had great games also. Matthew (None) - Posts: 1005 - 06/02/2022 19:49:43 2398677 Link 0 |
good solid display from the footballers . solid defensively . held laois very well when they had the wind , lucky goal by luke but he was in the right place to finish it .kevin maguire was in great form as were most of the defence . sam mcartin is a huge asset and will get better . john heslin and ronan o toole were excellant while alex gardiner will benefit from dessies coaching , there was great buzz when the bear martin came on . he just has that edge about him . grand happy journey home and move on to homesoil v longford in 2 weeks mickcunningham (Westmeath) - Posts: 1799 - 07/02/2022 09:14:55 2398788 Link 0 |
Interesting to see Senan baker in the squad against Laois. Didn't even know he was involved in senior set up. Still very young but some prospect for the future. Lakecounty94 (Westmeath) - Posts: 57 - 08/02/2022 18:42:34 2399400 Link 0 |
big local derby on sunday , a game we can win and should win mickcunningham (Westmeath) - Posts: 1799 - 17/02/2022 10:57:38 2400822 Link 0 |
A must Win against an average Longford team would love to see a few more get a chance and even play without heslin and see how it goes. Should still be able to get a result. Midfield aswell needs reinforcements I don't know if connellan is a midfielder a good fielder but not in the game enough. Wont learn much about lads if they don't get more games and consistently.
