Interesting team line out against Kildare. Nice to see some new faces despite the result. Didn't see the match , anyone play particularly well? Have a feeling we might see a few more experienced heads against Carlow the next day.

Wasn't at the Kildare game but did see some of it online.
Not a good performance at all, just 8 points scored and 5 were from frees/45's.
Just 2 scorers: 1 forward (Loughlin) and Connellan, both played well.
Obviously very much an experimental side and good to see a few new lads getting a chance.
However, some lads lucky to be there and I'd be surprised if they make the cut.
Good to see Dessie Dolan and John Keane involved and might help with Gardiner who was named to start but got no game time (deja vu ?)
Cilian Daly, Luke Loughlin and Kieran Martin back are big positives.
No mid-week game for WH this week so home to Carlow this Sat 2pm, presume TEG Cusack Park ?

jack had to go with the fringe players on saturday . that is the only way he will see his panel . im not sure what the story is with alex gardiner . luke loughlin will be a great asset great to have him back . i expect a few more of the regulars to start on saturday next as we build up to the league . ray connellan needs a good partner and i would be giving fola aryindi of st lomans a chance .

Great to see so many new faces playing at the weekend, as far as debuts go I think Shane Allen and Darragh Seery were the most impressive. I would have to imagine gardiners absence is due to injury/covid since he was named at 14 and somebody else ended up wearing that jersey. Hopefully we see him get game time against Carlow

Yes Seery and Allen did well and I thought Lynam was steady at midfield. Is Seery U20 again this year ? JC has confirmed Gardiner's absence was covid related, a close contact and waiting for a pcr I think. You'd be expecting a much improved performance this weekend and a win.

Was surprised not to see drumm from the downs involved the last day. Anyone know is he in with the group? Would be a good addition.

Seery did well when introduced. I thought Nigel Harte was one of the best new comers for us. I think Ray is best suited to the half forward line and I'd expect to see Fola start at midfield on Saturday. He seemed to be a bit of the pace last weekend. I'm looking forward to Gardiner getting a proper run this year as he will be a massive assist if he brings his club form to the Westmeath jersey.

Drumm is involved I heard but is playing Sigerson with UCD.

Carlow game off, I assume Covid in 1 or both camps.

I would have thought both Managers would have preferred to have the game to give players a run out. Even behind closed doors.

It is reported today Carlow pulled the plug due to players playing Sigerson twice already in a week. You would imagine there are others ready to be tried out if that is the case. I would say Jack and his management would have loved another game before the league to try the new lads in the squad. Fair enough it is a dead rubber but it doesn't say much for the integrity of the competition if games are just cancelled like that.

I think the o Byrne cup should go back with university's involved, gives counties more games to try out new players and even younger county players who haven't broken into a team can showcase what they are about for there universities.
Even top club players can shine I remember AIT had a good team a few years ago and some of those players got into county panel at senior and u-21 after sigerson.

Have to agree with you PowellJohn. O'Byrne Cup to be over after 1 game is a bit of a farce. If the Uni's were involved it would at least mean more games. I don't know why they left it in the first place apart from maybe it clashing with Sigerson scheduling but that should have been manageable.

I do however disagree with you on AIT having a good team. They haven't had a good team in 20 years.

Made the Sigerson semi final in 2013. That team must have been half decent, at least.

Nice to see a few lads involved in UCD Sigerson panel last night. Any word on any recent challenge games the team has had? I'd imagine they've had one or 2 seeing as obyrne cup game was called off

Who else was involved other than Ray?

Rumoured that a few big names will not be playing this year for Westmeath. I have heard names like Boidu, Ger Egan, Denis Corroon. Any truth in these rumours?

Fairly sure Egan is involved but recovering from an injury at the moment, don't know about boidu or Denis
