So that's the end of the league… and as we knew .. and eventually hoped for we've stayed in division 3! We're division 3 standard! And no harm in that for now. But the big question remains, Changes have to made for championship so what are the changes? Where do we start? Edman78 (Westmeath) - Posts: 100 - 27/03/2022 18:44:16 2407471 Link 0 |
Start by getting rid of cooney

Just back from Belfast. Mixed feelings. We probably played the best football we played in the league for the last 25 minutes today. Just a pity we weren't more consistent throughout the league. Not finishing Fermanagh off last weekend has cost us promotion but I don't feel we deserve to get promoted on balance on how we have played over the last few games. Were you at the game today or any league games over the last few weeks?

Sorry am I seeing things. Get rid of Cooney. Now Jack was a good footballer in his day. I was at a few games In the league. I didn't see L. Jack kick a ball. So on what grounds do we get rid of him

Happened to be in Mullingar for the Fermanagh game! The inconsitency is baffling you must be so frustrated as WM supporters. tarfboy (Dublin) - Posts: 27 - 27/03/2022 19:15:47 2407497 Link 0 |
I feel that we definately have the squad to succeed just inconsistency is killing us.Very unlucky to be relegated last year and this year 3 great wins away to Laois-Limerick-Antrim but then to lose at home against Longford was a killer.Division 3 was very close this season and maybe at the moment that is our level. Now is not a time to panic-just regroup and get ready for Longford in May and maybe then a Leinster semi final and who knows maybe a Leinster final-now is the time to support the management and squad. Well said Cooney has brought on Westmeath football in his three years and if we can get a bit of consistency we can achieve.

How have we come on? Finished third in an average division 3. Excusing team and management on basis of inconsistency is crazy. The best teams perform week in and week out. We struggle to perform in consecutive halves Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 1448 - 28/03/2022 14:05:27 2407766 Link 1 |
There seems to be a mix of disappointment with not getting promoted and contentment with division 3 being your level. How about the championship, How are Westmeath fixed for it? Mull93 (Longford) - Posts: 119 - 28/03/2022 15:28:21 2407799 Link 0 |
Connellan would want to be playing well he's 27/28 now not 22 or 23. The championship is Cooneys test now he needs one big scalp.

That comment just shows that you know nothing about Westmeath football.

There's no way that anyone who was at even 4/5 of our 7 games could claim that we've unearthed even one new player who has cemented his championship place. Ronan Wallace, Sam McCartan, Jason Daly apart from two errors against Fermanagh, John Heslin in some games, Jamie Gonoud and Jack Smith were our best players with Wallace and McCartan outstanding and each of those have been a regular championship starter in recent years. Conor McCormack is now injured, Ger Egan and James Dolan have been unavailable, Kieran Martin has played maybe 50-60 mins in total in 7 games and the likes of Robbie Forde and TJ Cox have been under utilised. Whoever said we are one of the best teams. We are far from it. We are very much a work in progress. I dont know what games you are watching to think any different. I certainly wouldnt look any further than the Longford game as it is going to be one hell of a battle. Anyone who thinks any different isnt worth listening to.

From your own post there, how would any manager be able to get some form of consistency from a team with (as you point out) the lack of talent coming through, the injuries to key players, the inconsistent players etc. To get where we did was a great achievement. Add to that the number of current players that we do have who are not up to the standard but we have to play them because we have nobody else.

Think you need to reread my posts Meridian. Where did I mention is being one of the better teams? Last summer we were on a par with Kildare and arguably should have beaten them in semi. Their league form has been pretty good albeit relegated but five points in div 1 is a decent effort. Division 3 this year contained quite a few average teams, next year will be more difficult with Down, Offaly, Cavan, Tipperary along with Fermanagh, Antrim and Longford. Hard to see us reach Provincial final so getting to the Tailteann cup final would be minimum target. Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 1448 - 30/03/2022 15:34:02 2408408 Link 0 |

Is the expectation levels of westmeath fans out of sync of quality of team ? Was promotion out of div3 not a reasonable target /expectation ? No god given right to promotion but was do-able. Do we as fans over rate certain players and think we're better than what we are in reality ? philbrown (Westmeath) - Posts: 227 - 30/03/2022 16:44:29 2408451 Link 0 |
I do think Div.3 was very competitive this year with every team capable of beating each other-look at Laois they beat Louth (table toppers)-drew with Antrim lost to Limerick by 1 pt-also gave Dublin a fair game in O Byrne cup final-yet they were relegated to Div.4.Westmeath missed out by 1 pt and at times played very well in games but also were very poor at times but I do believe this squad is good enough but need to up their consistancy a notch or two but they also as well as the management need full support going forward.Hopefully Ger Egan and James Dolan will be back soon to add to the squad but bad news about Conor McCormack as according to a Caulry member his injury recieved in training is very bad and might even miss their senior championship campaign-best wishes to him.
