If that's true about McCormack then he's a massive loss to us. It's the same every year for us. Get one or two players back and then 2 more leave. Can't blame lads but I just wonder why mayo and Galway and other teams don't have players going travelling all the time. It's always our best that leave. I'd be fairly certain Davy will be in charge next year and he needs to realise he needs top coaches there that can bring us forward. Was at a few club games over the last couple of weeks and can't say any new names impressed. Hopefully we can find one or two players to add with the few younger lads coming up.

I heard a rumour from Galway that Conor Carroll is about to transfer to a Roscommon club. Is it Kilmore or somewhere nearer the Galway border?? Rossieforever (Roscommon) - Posts: 93 - 20/08/2024 13:24:42 2565985 Link 0 |
Doubt very much it is Kilmore? There won't be much glory there!!

The missing link in stopping Brigids go all the way so history repeating itself it seems. fearnua (Galway) - Posts: 311 - 20/08/2024 16:17:28 2566033 Link 0 |
The rumour of transfer to St Brigids has been doing rounds since about November last year, wasn't a straight forward one hence why it's taking this long to go through.

Would appear he would be Brigits bound - would like to know the current keepers thoughts on this! Narrowly missed out on All Ireland success and tossed aside. Rossfan93 (Roscommon) - Posts: 60 - 21/08/2024 09:29:04 2566096 Link 0 |
Kilmore ain't an attractive proposition, simple as. Brigids aiming for a Connacht title and beyond. Sport is cruel. Brigids need that position improved so that's why they are looking for him.

Brigids would be current AI club champions if Carroll had managed to make that move a year ago is the reality. I don't blame the lad going to Brigids. He could easily be the Galway number 1 and have played in an AI final this year but chose us. MachaireConnacht (Roscommon) - Posts: 1000 - 21/08/2024 11:09:13 2566125 Link 1 |
Agree, Conor Cox aligned with the Club where the family connection existed. It is not just the current keeper thoughts but also the young keeper that has come up through all the underage teams with the ambition of some day being the Senior keeper. Any move like this will not go down well in parts of the kiltoom community. rosco7 (Roscommon) - Posts: 47 - 21/08/2024 13:13:19 2566159 Link 1 |
Yes agreed. It could also be argued that if Conor Carroll was the Galway keeper this year, Sam would have come West. Conor Gleeson was very slow off his line for the Armagh goal and a lot of Galway fans wouldn't be happy with him. Carroll's loyalty to us in choosing Roscommon has been admirable and we should be grateful to him for it. If Brigid's win the club All Ireland next January and he helps, that can only be good for Roscommon football.

Can imagine those thoughts with any young Brigids keeper is already there when you consider the first choice keeper is in his 40s and was outfield player before put in goal.

The blame for that Armagh goal was with whoever allowed Soupy Campbell so much space and time to create the goal and nobody tracking the run of the goal scorer. Gleeson was one of Galways top performers this year when the All Star nominations are published he should be among the three keepers named. The only error made in the All Ireland final in regards to Gleeson was Joyce not putting him on frees when Walsh was struggling. Gleeson free kicks won the Connacht Final and could well have won the All-Ireland final also if given the chance to take them. Gleason took 9 frees or 45 for Galway this year scored 4 not great return conroy or Tierney or comer should have taken when Walsh was not on form

I agree with Kickitiout on frees. Gleeson was slow off his line for the Armagh goal. Not a doubt about that but you're right that the Armagh players going forward both Campbell and the goal scorer should have been tracked. Drax ,ye missed a big opportunity in the Final. I fear it will be a long time until Sam comes West. Galway have lost two Finals in three years( both tight) and it'll be hard for ye to get back there. Mayo don't have the players they had 8/9 years ago and Roscommon unfortunately will bottle anything in Croke Park where we haven't had a championship win for 44 years. And yes, Davy's staying with us again next year after a memorable season for Roscommon of three wins in thirteen competitive fixtures.

And presumably most of the same players staying on too.....

No reason why a Connacht team cant win Sam. There is no great teams out there at the minute. Obviously Galway are capable. Mayo can improve (not convinced by management though). Roscommon as you say probably need to win a game in a Croke Park to break the hoodoo first.

It would be very unfair to blame the keeper for the goal. Galway allowed the Armagh player a free run at the goals with no defenders doing their job. Once Campbell gave the perfect pass there was only one outcome

Gleeson frees took this year were all long range and not high percentage scores. His match winner in the Connacht final was harder to score the ones Walsh missed in the All Ireland final. Comer would be well down the list when it comes to taking frees, Tierney was carrying a knock hence why he wasn't given any. Conroy would have been another option he knocked long range frees at ease for his club at the weekend. On Roscommon after league relegation how many honestly seem them reaching the last 8 of the championship? certainly weren't fancied with the bookies and their punters. Did so by beating a Div 1 team in their own back yard. Championship defeats for Roscommon this summer was against Armagh who went on to win the All Ireland and Dublin,Mayo whom Galway only beat by one score. So some perspective needed and out of interest how many of the Roscommon players that featured against Armagh played in their first ever All Ireland Quarter final knock out tie? Must have been 9 or 10?. At least our losses were all to teams who were / finished above us in the NFL., unlike 22 and 23 with Clare, Kikdare and Cork. Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 1988 - 22/08/2024 17:36:48 2566327 Link 0 |
