I respect PJ and all the players but we have 6 subs for a reason, use them when the starters are suckvalleypaddy (Galway) - Posts: 1706 - 19/06/2023 10:59:17 2487160 Link 0 |
Thought bringing in a back fir comer was a very negative move especially when you have someone like Burke who is not a scorer. jm25 (Galway) - Posts: 1314 - 19/06/2023 11:00:58 2487163 Link 0 |
Any truth behind the rumours Liam Silke is back in the country? Surely too late in the season to get up to speed. No one to match Aidan O'Shea it Sean Kelly is out allstars23 (Galway) - Posts: 49 - 19/06/2023 11:12:25 2487179 Link 0 |
Yesterday was fairly disastrous for Galway. Between the injuries, blowing the lead in the game when they had control of possession deep into injury time. The administrative balls up that meant they couldn't use 2 subs. I think the team selection from management also looked a bit strange. Outside of the players we knew would be missing this year i.e. Mulkerrin, Molloy and Silke there has been a massive drop-off in performance in the players who were consistent last year i.e. Walsh (being the most dramatic and sad to witness), Daly, Heaney, Tierney and Glynn. Burke has made no impact and is only a shadow of the player he was 5+ years ago. Conroy doesn't have the legs in the Summer heat for a full game. Cooke has got better with every game but can make some poor decisions like that kick-pass that gave the ball away at the end yesterday. Finnerty and Comer are out injured more often than not and Comer has been out injured more than actually playing in his intercounty career to date. The game-plan was poor yesterday - Armagh protected their "D" much better than Galway did and Galway could not break them down. Also the painfully slow kick-outs and lateral / laborious build-up play that often was turned over led to soft scores conceded at the other end. Armagh's plan was to target the Galway danger men i.e. Walsh and Burke especially as they saw it and then break quickly with long kick-passes to pick out the likes of Murnan and Grugan which worked pretty well for them. Galway looked complacent but as badly as Galway played yesterday they still should have least got a draw as that Armagh team are fairly average at best. It looks like Galway's journey will be coming to a shuddering end next week but I would say their Summer would even have been shorter without Kelly (a true leader and warrior wasted at fullback IMHO), Cooke (despite the odd lapse as mentioned) and Comer (when he plays that is). tommy k (Galway) - Posts: 3470 - 19/06/2023 11:24:26 2487192 Link 0 |

Will be interesting to see how the CCCC fix these matches as the hurlers are playing next Saturday as well. Sunday is kept for TC semi finals Jack L (None) - Posts: 3141 - 19/06/2023 11:31:41 2487203 Link 0 |
That was massively frustrating in Carrick yesterday. The muck list: Pre- game mgmt (Comer and McHugh med cert /only 24 men togged debacle), in-game mgmt (my 90 year old neighbour could see Kelly had to come off straight away, Ian Burke not at the races etc etc), kick outs, poor fielding, poor breaking ball work, placed balls, loose marking at half back, easy fouls for simple frees, forwards again not able to score goals, poor shot selection on many occasions, no cold-blooded killer instinct to put teams away, buying the b.s. about being superior to Armagh and that even a third or fourth gear controlled performance would do the job. Simply not good enough, Galway. togoutlads (Galway) - Posts: 984 - 19/06/2023 11:40:34 2487211 Link 2 |
Everyone's 'summer' is short in this new format. I think that's the idea. Give it another 2 weeks, and damn near every team will be out of everything, and we won't feel so bad about it then.

Jesus can we not support lads. I swear the first thing TommyK thinks about after a match is how can I lay into players

Tommyk rubbing his hands together when they lost, awfully quiet when Galway win.

Galway management's failure to replace the clearly injured Sean Kelly late in the game yesterday, exacerbated the extent of his injury, as Sean was forced to compete in a subsequent passage of play against his ankles wishes. Their failure to involve Owen Gallagher in any facet of this years mission was also very shortsighted indeed, as he would bring an additional dimension to their play. Galway, when Comer is absent are quite limited and will really struggle against Mayo next weekend. Mayo are no great shakes either by the way Mayo52 (Mayo) - Posts: 44 - 19/06/2023 13:22:40 2487310 Link 3 |
Can't believe McStay released C. O'Connor for club duty at the weekend. Is it a natural self-destruct button Connaught teams are prone to. John Daly's attempt to play the offside trap, reminded me of Mick Judge v Mickey Freyne (Ros) effort back in the day. Only thing was, it was a back pass from his own player.. lol.. Tbh, the refs. are adopting a "to hell or to Connaught" attitude with their decision-making. McGrath displayed text book "robbing" on one occasion, and next the ref. who was 50 metres up the pitch pulls him for last free. Time for 2 refs. imo. Everyone knew we would get Mayo. Galway the last 2 years have drawn the tough teams so it will be kerry or Dublin next. brisbane (Galway) - Posts: 675 - 19/06/2023 13:32:30 2487320 Link 1 |

I've no fear of O'Shea. Lacks pace and very one sided. I'd be much more worried about Carr, Conroy or O'Donoghue. The 2 Armagh players that did the damage yesterday had pace and were accurate. smallfrank (Galway) - Posts: 443 - 19/06/2023 13:49:57 2487333 Link 2 |

No I have often complimented the team when they do well but they have lost a lot of matches (3 finals in the last 2 years) they should have won (summation of Galway GAA teams in general there!) and I never got involved in the hype that Galway were favourites for SAM - to me it was always between Dublin and Kerry in that order. Hope I'm wrong but I doubt it!
