Replying To Viking66:  "We have our workshop next week. It's compulsory for u11s up and recommended for u7s and u9s mentors and managers. I'd say clubs will take this more seriously than you think.
Whether it will make any difference when a lad loses it on the sideline is still debatable though. I'm absolutely certain I've never met anyone who didn't do or say something they regretted afterwards after losing their temper."
Ours is on Monday evening, and we're taking the same approach with the age groups.

For the record, I never said that clubs won't take this seriously. I just said that clubs could just tick boxes and fill in a form without a workshop having actually taken place, because there's no real way of checking up on it. Would like to think that won't happen anywhere, though.

Replying To Viking66:  "While he was really wrong to push the referee over you can't say the umpire, a cousin of the Referee according to the article, didn't come at him unless you were there. One thing going for the fella is I don't think Id've been able to publicly apologise in the local paper, with a picture of myself etc, whatever I had done. Certainly in private, but definitely not in public. Numerous refs have got numerous decisions wrong and you wouldn't see any of them apologise in public either, nor should they.
This doesn't change the fact that refs shouldn't be touched or threatened under any circumstances. But maybe it would help if the 2 managers could get 5 minutes after a game with the ref away from any crowd to ask for a decision or 2 to be explained."
Maybe the umpire came at him, and maybe he didn't. You're right - I can't say myself, because I wasn't there.

But fact remains that the self-confessed perpetrator of an offence has been allowed to make an accusation against a third party, who apparently wasn't given an opportunity to respond, and who may not be under investigation at all.

Back to something like I said earlier - if two friends got a few slaps each while walking home some night, the paper wouldn't interview the culprit and carry a statement like "yeah, I was annoyed with the first lad for something he did earlier, and I only got involved with the second lad after he came at me first". They'd just say an assault occurred, and Gardaí are investigating.

Agreed the GAA as an organisation didn't need the publicity and also I agree that if it had happened on the street then the press likely wouldn't cover it at all. Tbh it would be unlikely the Gards would have got involved either if a fella pushed another fella over outside a pub or nightclub unless the lad hit his head when falling and got seriously injured.
The most important thing that might help prevent situations like the 1 after the OLI/Joes last weekend happening again, apart from fines and threats of longer bans, would be the 5 minute referee/2 managers meeting after every game from u11 up. The mentors would then be able to say to their manager "ask that ###### why he gave that free, or didn't see that foul, etc when you are talking to him" instead of running onto the pitch and getting into a situation with the ref in the 1st place. And the ref would be able to say how he saw whatever the incident was, and also be able to apologise for a decision if he realised after making it that he got it wrong. That would go a long way to diffusing these situations before they even started. Prevention being better than cure and all that.
As regards the bans and/or fines, I think these should depend on the severity of the assault and whether the perpetrator has previous. Much like is the case in most justice systems around the world. Someone who keeps assaulting refs should be banned for life. A year or 2 and a stiff fine might do for a first offence if it was only a bit of finger pointing into the chest.

Really looking forward to the games this weekend.

On the intermediate, Fethard and Horeswood look really strong favourites but both should be get good tests this weekend. If Maudlintown can get afew of there big players back from injury I think they can give Fethard a good game, Fethard are very strong going forward but I think there defence may be there down fall. Overall I think Fethsrds forwards will get them over the line in this, John Tubritt is untouchable at times and has the likes of Mikey Dwyer, Cian Byrne and Bryan Power along side him.

Ferns were lucky enough to get the 4th spot after the final group game, I think they have the potential to beat anyone in this grade on there day but have lacked some consistency. Clongeen dominated them the last day and they only kicked one point in the second half. Horeswood have some top forwards and if Ferns switch off like that it could be a long long afternoon for them. Ryan Nolan was away the last and will be a huge help to them. Overall I would fancy Horeswood to beat them and to go on and win it outright.

I'm finding it hard to split Taghmon and Gorey. Taghmon started well with 3 wins, there last two games would worry me. Conceding 3-13 and 5-12, they will need to tighten up at the back if they have any hopes of going further in this. Naomh Eanna on the other hand got off to a slow enough start getting beat by Clongeen, they have been unbeaten since and picked up a draw against Fethard. They seem to be missing afew players from previous years but are still a very strong outfit, Cian Molloy has impressed me and has kicked some good scores. I slightly fancy Naomh Eanna in this but I think I'll sit on the fence and go for a draw

The final QF is a repeat of the intermediate A final from afew years ago, Cushinstown were convincing winners on the day. Cushinstowns have some clasy players, the porters, Daire Bolger and Matthew Cody would be the standout players for me. They have gave Horeswood a really good game in the first round and would have been disappointed to not get anything out of it. They've struggled to get over the two teams that came 5th and 6th in the group, drawing with the Fintans and beating the Duffry by two points with the help of an additional man for the majority of the game. They seem to be coming out the right side of these tight games and will be interesting to see how they perform this weekend. Clongeens will be very happy with there first year in this grade and have been unlucky in any game they didn't take some points from. They gave fethard a really good game, they have a strong running game and if they can bring a similar performance to this game I think they will give Cushinstown a good game but will ultimately fall short by a point or two.

I am impressed with the way this is being dealt with by county board, getting all mentors to attend and if not clubs games are cancelled..now one thing I will say is that no matter what is done some mentors will still act the complete clown..it won't fully disappear I think until there are a few cases taken and maybe a few sentences handed down..I'd hope that croke park might insist that all clubs in every county has to embark on these courses..

Agree with all of that. If Taghmon keep Gorey to 2 goals or less I think they will win.

A horrible day weather-wise for the first of the senior quarter-finals in Bree tonight.

Seems a somewhat odd choice of venue too, and I'm wondering if after a couple of incidents with the floodlights in Bellefield in the past, that they simply don't trust them any more to work properly for an important match?

Obviously you couldn't put Starlights v Shels on in Bellefield tonight, but what you could have done is put Kilanerin v Castletown there, instead of making them travel all the way to Wexford on Sunday. Then Starlights v Shels could have been on in the Park on Sunday instead.

Think the weather is supposed to clear up this afternoon Pikeman.
I imagine the thinking on Castletown v Kilanerin is that it likely, or at least hopefully, will draw a big crowd. Bellefield wouldn't hold that many.
Bellefield is ideal for games like ours 2moro which I am imagining won't draw a massive crowd.

One of many strange calls with venues and timings this year.
I'd say the incidents with lights in bellefield has nothing to do with it or at least it shouldnt have anything to do with it. They have been used often enough since then for important games.

I am aware of a wedding this weekend involving the Starlights so maybe they requested friday night but clubs agreed at a meeting when the format was decided that requests would not be tolerated. I suppose on the other hand when a request can be accommodated then why not. Obviously Starlights couldnt be fixed for Bellefield, but surely Patricks Park and Taghmon would have been ahead of Bree to host a senior quarter final from a spectator experience perspective.
The other thing that makes no sense is why Wexford park is only hosting 1 senior game on Sunday and if it was to host just 1 game, then of the 4 senior quarter finals the St Annes Glynn game was the most obvious to put there yet that is in New Ross. Kilanerin Castletown should have been in bellefield on Saturday night under lights.

One of the Starlights players is getitng married Saturday, hence why its in Bree tonight.

As for only one senior game in Wexford Park, the ladies football finals are scheduled for there on Saturday. Of the remaining three senior games, the north county derby seems to be the stand-out tie, and the least geographically feasible to play in New Ross (although I agree Bellefield would have been ideal). Also, both Kilanerin and Castletown's junior teams on quarter-finals on Saturday so it was hard to balance all plates. It's paired with Ferns-Horeswood, which again wouldn't be suitable for New Ross.

They seem to give top billing for the last game on Sunday for the stream.

Bellefield has an official capacity of over 5,000. I can assure you that would be enough for Castletown v Kilanerin.

Didn't know about the Starlights wedding on Saturday, so at least that explains that one.

On the suggestion that Bellefield wouldn't be big enough for Castletown v Kilanerin - it's not that long ago that we were talking here about putting matches like that one in Gorey. Bellfield would easily accommodate at least as many as Gorey would.

Maybe so but if there was a crowd of 2000 there there'd be serious issues with parking and many more than that and there'd be people there that would be unable to see the whole pitch.

Bellefield would probably hold more than Gorey. I'm not sure what crowd the Castletown Kilanerin senior football QF would attract but I do know Castletown brought a good following for their inter A hurling final against Horeswood because I was there.

As comfortable as Shels were in winning, it was a terrible spectacle. Don't remember a flatter quarter-final performance than the one shown by Starlights tonight. Whatever about being outclassed, which can happen on occasion, and has happened at this stage before, but they went completely through the motions. They didn't seem to have any tactic, apart from putting Nick Doyle in at full-forward for the second half, and even then didn't know what to with him in there.

2-2 of Shels early total came during a sin-binning for Starlights, and they missed a penalty too, all the while the two Malones and O'Gara were quiet, and didn't even need to be at their best. May have wanted a stiffer test ahead of the semis, but there on merit.

Pitch was looking good despite the rain and the floodlights are excellent.

Missed the game but chatting to a lad who was at it and said it was a massive gulf in class. He was expecting a close game, sounds like the Starlights from the first round against CB. I guess we will find out later if the standards of the two groups were a bit unbalanced

I got the end of the Glynn/Anne's game today and while the last couple of minutes of it were exciting I can't really comment on the full game. I thought Glynn would get over the line today but it was not to be, will this be the end of Jason Ryan with them?

Gusserane gave the James a good game after it looked like being over at half time being down being 10 points. The James will be very disappointed with how they managed the game in the second half, they got outscored by 1-6 to a point in the first 15 minutes of the second half and let Gusserane right back into it. This Gusserane team is missing some key players from last year, I was impressed with how they got back into the game, unfortunately for them they really missed these keys players to try get them over the line in the last 10 minutes. Mark Rossitor and Sam Wall have both had a brilliant year and are two very stylish footballers.

The second half will really worry the James going into the SF, I thought Gavin Sheehan done an excellent job on KOG and when he's kept under tabs they don't have many other forwards to stand up. I thought MOH was excellent and would of been my man of the match, when the game was in the melting pot he really stood up, when he's on it he can change the momentum of a game. Overall it's job done for the James but there's a lot of room for improvement.

I seen them twice in the group stages and couldn't believe what I was seeing, on paper they have some top footballers but just looked so disinterested in it this year. I wouldn't write them off though, I think if they can regroup and can get that spark back into the squad they will be back contending next year.
