Lol - that's what confuses me. On one hand the message is that this year more than any people should be getting the Flu jab yet going by official figures Flu deaths have only been in the hundreds this year compared to an average of around 17,000 over the last 5 years. Does not compute!

The flu is down because we are isolating. It will be straight back up when Covid is gone.

Each to their own.

Actually it's fairly logical. The flu symptoms are very similar to Covid and therefore if you have the flu you will end up getting tested for covid for no reason and all that goes with that. In addition people may when they have Covid just put it down to having the flu. They say it's possible to have the flu and Covid at the same time but I haven't seen any studies on this but that is most likely down to the fact that they first test for covid and unless that's negative they will not test for the flu. There is no way there are thousands dying each year from the flu, I believe the estimate in Ireland is 200-500 per year. The flu has a vaccine, is less contagious and symptoms not as severe but it does kill the same people Covid would. The reason it's down is because it's a virus that spreads in a similar matter to Covid and all the measures for covid would also stop the flu as well. So yes get your jab and do your part zinny (Wexford) - Posts: 1951 - 28/10/2020 12:33:32 2302443 Link 0 |
Missed this first time round. Totally agree, numbers at minute are a reflection on schools. Closing businesses, people off work on skid row, having digs at GAA but packed schools back on Monday. Different schools on packed buses and masks won't help when the the buses are packed. Better one parent at home to look after children than both off and child at school.

The also say that there would be trace coronavirus if you tested for it every flu season. But as for the jab - I have never had it yet any year and this year will be no different. As I say, each to their own

Sorry but that is complete rubbish, there are idiots out there who put out the theory that the virus was always around and it was just never tested for - that's like saying the only reason the numbers of infected are going up is because we are testing - don't test and nobody has it. Its great that you can live in your own little bubble and will go through life never needing assistance from anyone else, the rest of us are just not that smart I guess.

Be honest, is there anyone here that actually fears this virus? lilypad (Kildare) - Posts: 1363 - 28/10/2020 16:55:47 2302567 Link 1 |
And you have idiots who think this is the first Coronavirus too. I prefer to get past the headlines and look at actual data and facts as a whole to get a complete picture - this is not being dismissive but looking at the whole picture. As for your other assertions/assumptions - eh???? Offside_Rule (Antrim) - Posts: 4058 - 28/10/2020 17:26:39 2302580 Link 1 |
Of course most people should know by now that Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that are known to cause illness - anything from the common cold, annoying & inconvenient but nothing more for most if us; to more severe diseases such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) or the current Covid 19. The reality is that the scientific community have been baffled by this disease & are working around the clock to come up with both vaccines & treatment options so I really would love to hear your conclusions based on your data analysis, please share.

I don't fear it but I do respect it. Why would I want to bring this into my wider extended family and possible have someone die from it. Young people in the main won't die from this but by ignoring it they are keeping Covid alive and increasing the risk of their elderly relatives dying from it.

My wife had it a few months ago, but I never caught it, so I just don't know what to think.

Sorry to hear that, hope all is ok now. I know of a friend's work colleague who got it but so did all his family. It is a strange one alright... Fionn (Dublin) - Posts: 4205 - 28/10/2020 23:24:18 2302700 Link 1 |
I know a woman in her 60s who died from it, fit and healthy looked after herself and no underlying conditions. Another man I know in his 50s was in ICU for a few days with it and now has problems with breathlessness and fatigue and he was healthy before it. I also know a lot of people who got over without a problem so there must be some common link in the most severe cases and in time hospitals will find this out. 12 months ago we hadn't even heard of this and we can see here in Ireland the difference in the death rate compared to 6 months ago as hospitals are learning to treat this better and give it another 6 months even without a vaccine the treatments will have improved again. There is definitely too much panic being created in the community mainly by the media and the way the numbers are being communicated each evening but until there is a better understanding of the disease it's better nor to get it.

My conclusion? I don't have a conclusion yet - unlike a lot it seems I am pretty open minded on the whole Covid whereas others seem to have their mind made up already that we are either all doomed or that the whole thing is a con. When the 2020 figures have all been collated and published it will give a truer picture of it all. I have been working at home since March, I have observed all the rules laid out, I wear my mask the odd time I venture in to the shop, sanitize the hands on the way in, maintain my distance etc etc etc. But as I say, I also get beyond the hysteria and the headlines and look at the real data to try and make an informed decision as to how damaging the virus is in regard to deaths (month to month, year on year and 5 year averages), the economy, the mental well being of society etc. What I have noticed though throughout is that it is people like yourself who have their minds made up already that tend to be the most vocal/aggressive in shouting anyone down who has a different stance or who may look at figures and question the narrative or the measures being enforced to combat it. The reality is none of us know so how can any of us be in a position where we are telling others they are wrong. Offside_Rule (Antrim) - Posts: 4058 - 29/10/2020 11:25:14 2302768 Link 3 |
Certainly is a good news story and Corvid has played a big part in this, people isolating, washing hands and wearing masks has played a big part in keeping flu numbers down, also many more have gotten the Viral Pneumonia vaccination (myself included).
