Errigal Ciaran are Tyrone senior football champions for the second time in three years after edging out Trillick by 0-12 to 1-8 last night in Omagh.

In what was the second consecutive O’Neill Cup decider meeting between these two teams, Ruairi Canavan’s point in the 51st minute was what ended up being the difference between them on this occasion.

Team captain Darragh Canavan had given last year’s runners up a 0-7 to 0-6 lead at the end of an airtight first-half, with the sides having been level four times before the break.

Ryan Gray’s point got Trillick all square again two minutes into the restart but the points of Ruairi Canavan (2), Peter Harte and Odhran Robinson saw the holders falling four behind come the 41st minute.

Mattie Donnelly grabbed a sorely needed score for his team two minutes later and it’d be honours even again in the 46th minute after Ciaran Daly found the bottom corner of the Errigal Ciaran net.

The title was well and truly up for grabs after that and, after a couple of missed chances, Ruairi Canavan sent over what proved the winner with his sixth and final point of the night as Errigal got huge turnovers in defence from Eoin Kelly and Joe Oguz in the latter stages to go on and claim their ninth SFC triumph.
