Agreed all played well and were on for whole game+ extra time, Fee and Prendegast were the heart beat of the DIT team, keeping Cormack Egan quite at the same time. Somehow DIT managed to lose it after being comfortable the better team (In my opinion). Also Stone was solid for UCD. Nolan won a great ball at the end of the game that should have won it for DIT, but again DIT managed to mess up the break away with time up. All in all they looked comfortable at that level, just a shame for Wicklow they didn't get the win, it been great for the confidence.

It is great to see these players having outstanding games for these colleges in a competition like the Sigerson cup, however, it would seem that playing at intercounty level is a further setup again. Like all supporters, I am impatient and want to see us get promotion out of Division 4 as I want these young players to get exposed to playing at a higher level on a consistent basis. The problem we as a county have had in the past is being bogged down in Division 4 and not being able to escape. In my opinion, playing in Division 4 doesn't aid players in reaching their potential.

Yes it may well be a step up but i am not so sure most of the players at sigerson level are intercounty players and team sheets often age well. One of the DIT subs got 11 points for Cavan on the weekend. Yes we do need to get out of Division 4 but like i think its indication that our younger players are of a decent standard compared to other counties.

He might have made the difference. I think DIT left it behind them.

Talking about Wicklow not getting scores I'd like to make a point. Since Oisin McConville has came on as manager he has never used the best forwards we have in the county eg Tommy kelly top scorer and senior footballer of the year twice , Eddie Doyle top scorer of the year also not used and now the two boys from Tinahealy , he obviously has a type of footballer in mind that will run for ireland but we need scoring forwards. I think under the old rules, there was a need to have a certain type of player who was able to play with certain tactics in mind i.e. it wasn't always the best players but this has changed now, there is a emphasis on forwards who can score as there is more room on the pitch for them to get chances. In a recent interview Oisin did allude to having a small squad as players didn't want to commit to playing inter county. I'm not making an excuse for him but some of the players mentioned like Kelly and Doyle may not want to play intercounty. Obviously the two Tinahely guys: Darcy and Ging are part of the panel and so are available to play if picked by the manager. It will be interesting to see what changes (if any) he makes for the game against Waterford on Saturday. We are at home and it is a must win game if we want to be in the promotion race so it is a pressure game to that extent.

A win is a win but was that getting a bit close for comfort ? Good to see the Tinahely boys involved - and Andy Maher. Freethinker (Wicklow) - Posts: 1414 - 08/02/2025 16:31:17 2590056 Link 1 |

A good win away to Armagh by the Wicklow hurlers today. With regard to the footballers, I'm not encouraged by their first two matches. We have Longford, Carlow and Limerick at home and Wexford and Tipperary away. And while I acknowledge that Division 4 is wide open in terms of the two teams to be promoted, I don't think Wicklow will be in the promotion race if we continue to play like the team did yesterday in the second half. I'd go as far as to say no intercounty team would win many matches playing well for 30 minutes. Hopefully the management and players can react to yesterday's second half performance and put in a decent shift for the full match. wicklowsupport (Wicklow) - Posts: 2057 - 09/02/2025 15:53:04 2590263 Link 0 |
I made it to the game on Sunday. The win was welcome but slightly worrying the way we let Waterford back into the game. That will be disastrous against better opposition. Good to see the newer faces in the team, but we do seem to have issues with settling on a best 15. Maybe that is intentional. A worrying feature is our inability to kick long range points - now worth 2. Waterford could do it, London could do it, and you wonder if we are still slightly influenced by that old tactic of not losing possession at any cost. Under the new rules, unless we get a player or too who are encouraged to have a go and become prolific at it, we will struggle. While promotion is still possible, on what I saw, we will need a fair splash of luck to get there. Anyway, very best of luck to the squad and management against Longford on Sunday. If only we had a long range kicker on the panel just sitting on our bench…

On a separate note, why was the football match delayed last Saturday. roseyinthegarden (Wicklow) - Posts: 125 - 11/02/2025 14:48:38 2590615 Link 0 |
I'd love to know who our long range kicker on the bench is. Really intrigued actually.........
