Antrim poor, but Meath also very solid throughout, we've a very young defence 5/6 20s next year

Antrim wouldn't be the standard we are trying to fit but it was an exceptional Meath performance. Forced so many turnovers, hunger in the tackle and to tackle in groups, unselfless running and the right options being taken and some real quality up front. Key is to keep this going throughout the championship

The final of the development league against Mayo is on Saturday at 2pm in St Brigids Roscommon's ground in Kiltoom. Should be a great test and indicator of where we are. Looking forward to it

We need to get behind the u20s this year in huge numbers. It's time to probably reset from seniors to this grade for this year. I will of course go to both but I will be far more interested in the u20s rather than the seniors

1.Billy Hogan (if fit)
2.Conor Ennis
3.Liam Kelly
4.Sean O'Hare
5.Killian Smyth
6.Brian O'Reilly
7.Shaun Leonard
8.Jack Kinlough
9.Conor Grey
10.Liam Stafford
11.Ruairi Kinsella
12.Ciaran Caulfield
13.Alan Bowden
14.Eoghan Frayne
15.Sean Emmanuel

Not sure what team could line out or what positions really I think this team is solid enough. I know Sean O'Hare or Killian Smyth haven't played much with 20s due to school football so maybe Brian O'Halleron and Tom Bowden or John Finnerty make an appearance?

The team and match day panel.
I suppose not too many surprises going by the starting 15 that started in the league games with one player who was injured for the league (Ciaran Caufield) well deservedly starting, now that he is fit. The most interesting thing about the starting 15 (which reflects somewhat the selection in the last two league wins over Down and Antrim) is the big Skryne man Oisin Keogh playing at Full forward. Prior to that Frayne played at full forward and Kinsella at Centre forward, now Frayne plays at 11 and Kinsella is named at 15. The very classy Frayne (1-7) was great at 11 against a poor Antrim (when Kinsella wasn't available for selection) but in any case, even with Alan Bowden missing out through injury (scored 0-7 against Antrim) Meath will be too strong up front for Longford this evening. Keogh scored two points against Antrim, one probably the best of the game.
One more interesting fact is that all six of the starting backs are under 20 again next year, eight in total of the starting 15 today and also 7 of the 9 subs which is very positive looking ahead to next year too.
The bulk of the team and bulk of the panel today are made up of the Minor All-Ireland champions of 2021. Only 11 of the starting 15 of John McCarthy's 2020 winning Leinster Minor Championship team make it into the 24 man match day panel today and none of the other four starters and only one (Oisin Keogh) of rest of that 2020 panel are included in the 24 match day panel today. Now there are some players out with long term injuries: Adam McDonnell, Mark Coffey & Thomas Corbett.
Best of luck to Meath this evening and throughout the championship. We need these lads to give us hope for the future.

Strong team and squad named. Pity Alan Bowden is injured he had been doing very well in the league and having that second scoring inside forward to help out Frayne will be crucial if we want to win trophies. Hopefully Bowden, Killian Smith and Adam McDonnell will be able to come back in and improve the squad. This team is the strongest under 20's team we've had in a while. We have a good depth from the 2021 minors and then real quality and physical players from the 2020 minors. We have to make it count and going off league form and how well some of these players done for colleges I think they are well capable. Hopefully get off to a good start tonight.

Great win tonight in terrible conditions , team looks better than last year. And in fairness to management they have seemed to learned their lesson from last year too. Well done to all involved.

Good start to the campaign. We got a great start, faded out for a bit from 20-40 mins but kept working hard and gave nothing easy defensively. If anything we tried to play too much football given the horrible conditions but that should come off in better weather as the season progresses. Frayne brilliant, Oisin Keogh a good focal point inside, Caulfield the best I've seen him but he picked up a hamstring injury right at the end. Hopefully not too serious. All and all things moving in the right direction, Carlow next Tuesday in Ashbourne and Laois the week after so momentum could count for a lot with games coming up quickly.

Seems the thing that will kill us is injuries with a few key lads already out, but plenty of depth there high hopes for this group

Solid win on a difficult night against opposition that have scuttled is at underage before, seemed to control things well second half as John McCarthy alluded to, lots of talent within this squad and its important they get maximum support

Yeah the injuries are mounting up. Killian Smyth, Alan Bowden, now Caulfield, Adam McDonnell and Mark Coffey more long term. Hopefully the first 4 will be back for a Leinster semi final (if we get there). The squad is really strong when everybody is fit
