I think the standard in Ulster has really levelled out in the last year no stand out team Derry look in good shape but will have to deal with favourite tag this year and teams will be more familiar with their style hard to know where Tyrone are but will be the hardest to beat not much between Armagh Donegal Monaghan and Cavan on any given day. breffnibluewhite (Cavan) - Posts: 519 - 28/01/2023 14:08:39 2454726 Link
Team was released earlier, but I'd expect changes from the 15 named: Galligan Finnegan, Faulkner, Carolan Holla Brady, McVeety, Tiarnan Madden Conor Brady, K Clarke Oisin Kieran, G Smith, McLoughlin Marty Reilly, O'Neill, Oisin Brady Paddy Lynch named on the bench. If he has any fitness, we might need him. Likes of Cian Madden, David Brady, Ryan Donohoe, and Stephen Smith might either start or see time off the bench. Going to be a tough afternoon I think. That's leaves a lot of time for lads to pass fitness, or get injured on the last session on Thursday or such. 4 days is a lot. Should be Friday maybe and you'll get more accurate teams. Well that was pleasantly surprising. Thought we'd find that tough, but we were by far the better team even with players missing. Did get nervy for a spell when they got 1-2 on the trot, but we had enough to see this out. Kept them scoreless for maybe 40 minutes, and managed the game very well against a strong wind 1st half. Not perfect by any means. Missed a few scores, but we were better than Westmeath, and took enough of our chances considering we had no forward you'd depend on for 3 or so scores from play. McVeety a thorn in their side all day, and along with Holla and Tiarnan Madden, the half back line were great. Ryan O'Neill very good at winning ball and took his 2 scores well. Hard won game, but happy with that start to the season on a heavy field on windy conditions. Things in our hands now. 4 of the next 6 games at home, and need to push on through this division. Conor Brady looks like he'll miss a spell with a hamstring gone, but hopefully more other lads to come back soon. Good start to the year! Well thank God for the return of a fully fit Holla and McVeety. Possibly the 2 best players in the county. We're like a new team with them. Plenty of brawn throughout the team today got us over a tough battle. Ryan O'Neil is a very good ball winner inside. GMac and Gerry still to come back onto this team too. Plenty to be optimistic about. Would still question some lads and their grit and as a nice a footballer as some may be, they just lack the physicality for this level. I think we've plenty more athletes to bring on to the scene to add to this. I saw Conor Smith and Jack McKenna heading into the dressing room at half time, 2 lads I'm really hoping can make the break this year as they are so dominant at club level. Didn't take long to go straight to negativity. Were you at the game? It was a tight field, on very heavy ground, with a gale wind in January. This was more an arm wrestle to be fair, and I think we did very well to hold them out and manage the game the way we did. We managed it and picked them off bit by bit to open a 0-9 to 0-3 lead, which i thought was decent with no out and out scoring forward (hopefully Lynch will be back to full fitness soon). Yes, we had a wobble, but we had a lot of inexperienced fellas out there (6 debuts yesterday) and we got a way out of that funk to see the game off. There are far more positives from yesterday, considering they beat us in July, and had more experienced players on their panel at home. I wouldn't be too worried about the scoring yet. 1st game on heavy pitch. I know it was only 5 points from play but the 2 points against a so called promotion rival was more important. Think we might have to win ugly to get out of this Div and at the moment that's more important than scoring averages. Winning breeds confidence and if we can go on a run of wins with 4 of the next 6 at home I thing scoring averages will automatically improve. Listened to game on northern sound and was delighted that we got the win I know we had a bit of a sticky patch but so do all teams, boys on the radio were saying our half back line were brilliant yesterday can anyone that was at the match confirm that as don't take much notice of the two on the radio, anyway we owed them one after the game in July and it's in our hands now which is what we want iron out the sloppiness and with for games at home we should get out of this division go for the jugular and be ruthless and we should be fine. Good start . Cavan looked more hungry and main Westmeath players weren't as prominent. Ryan O Neill had a good game. A run of games in McKenna Cup seems to have brought him on. He was around the panel a few years off /on. Down had a good win in Tipperary. Fermanagh playerd very well by all accounts against Longford. Quigley back in action. Our biggest problem is same for past few years and needs to be sorted asap. We create very few goal chances and have a very poor conversion rate on the ones we do create. This allows teams that we often totally dominate like all our league games last year to stay in the game and then we are open to a sucker punch goal which normally comes and leaves us hanging on like yesterday. look at Roscommon yesterday two of their goals against tyrone were never goal chances a point was by far the safer option but they went for the jugular and reaped the rewards if that was cavan we would have taken our points and came away with our normal 4 to 6 point defeat. breffnibluewhite (Cavan) - Posts: 519 - 30/01/2023 11:39:06 2455221 Link

Do agree to a point. But with that heavy field yesterday, really didn't allow for many goal chances for both sides. Westmeath got the only one they created, which was a palm in from a fist pass across the square. We had one half chance where O'Neill took a point when he could have taken another solo and had a shot at goal. I think point at that time was the right call though as points from play were at a premium. A win is a win, more that a lot of us expected.,There was a lot of young lads out there who did very well in their 1st competitive game at this level. Let's give them a bit of confidence. They will learn, Cork scored 19pts and lost. Carlow scored 2-10 and drew. It's about getting the result in these early matches and setting yourself up for something to play for. Yeah they were excellent both defensively and offensively. They drove forward on numerous occasions and created overlaps. Though Niall carolan also had a great game. Of the forward I was a bit disappointed in Oisin Brady. Didn't kick on from the McKenna Cup. He coughed up possession a few times. The tackling overall was very good, turned over a lot of ball. Good win. More comfortable than I thought it would be. Tiernan madden is a good addition with mcvetty back aswell. Goals are a problem because we don't have forwards who go for the jugular when they have the chance. In saying that there are only a couple of forwards in the county who are goal threats.
