Drainage was always a problem in there but i though they sorted it when they did the relay in 2018 obviously not.

Replying To Loughduff Lad:  "As it's a pre-season tournament, and things can change up to throw in. GAA usually require teams days in advance for printing the program, and some might be touch and go at that time. Johnny McCabe named to start v Antrim, but pulled up in training the night before with an injury for example. You'll get that kind of thing"
I totally understand what you are saying Loughduff Lad but most players replaced usually end up coming on as substitute so can't be injured… Most county and club teams do this for some reason but I can't get my head round it at all.. it has no benefit.. On last night it was great to see McVitty back and getting the win was brilliant as it gives us another game ( v Tyrone ) to get us ready for the league…

Johnny McCabe didn't play at all last weekend. Faulkner was named last night, didn't start due to a twinge, and didn't come on so can't agree with you there. The issue here is needing to provide a team sheet days before the final session before a game, where there may be selections still not sorted yet. It's one of those things I'm not sure how you'd sort. There's every chance a coach is waiting on late fitness, or other word, before finalising his team. Which may be days after the program one provided

Yeah indeed. He's been great so far and a huge addition back into the team.

Do we (or the GAA) really need a full team list in advance of games in this day and age? The argument for in the past was always about matching the pre published programme (hardly a major issue for McKenna Cup), but with numbers 1 - 15 now pretty much meaningless position wise, by all means announce the squad, and players play to those numbers on the day. Another tradition gone, but with players no longer playing to set positions, and so many subs introduced, what would we be missing out on? Plus not announcing a team until shortly before a big match builds it's own talking / debating points to add to the drama of the day.

Currently injured. James Smith, Patrick Lynch, Jason McLoughlin, Killian Brady also missed the McKenna Cup games.

So interesting evening yesterday. Decent crowd in at it. Few more lads missing, the knock that Marty took Wed night kept him out. Some like Conor Madden and Faulkner returned. Tyrone went very strong. Overall decent start. We've been good at starting and getting off the mark, opening up a lead, but then falling back and looking poor in the 2nd quarter. That needs to be looked at, where our concentration goes there. Made some changes. Cooke and Maguire looked good, and would have disappointed not to start. But suppose 3 games in 6 days is a big ask for a few fellas.

Came back well 3rd quarter, and got back within 1 but game opened up and they kept ticking on ahead. Got to mention how poor the ref was. Hate going on about officials, but he was very harsh on us, but Tyrone got some very handy similar frees. 2 shoulders and hands on the back near goal, which would have been easy frees for Oisin Brady (who was good, great to have a 2 footed free kicking option), were not given. Tyrone also scored after not being penalised (including touching ball along ground repeatedly along end line). These can be the difference in a 3 point game entering injury being closer. Just can't get over a ref being so poor. Be picky, sure, but consistent for both sides. Anyway, Tyrone had the nous to pull away when we were going forward. 5 points probably flatters them.

Overall happy enough. Good campaign. We've tested some debutants, and shook off some cobwebs. Lots to work on, including attack. Many times we had a 4 on 2, but we end up recycling back slowly to the 65 and let them reorganise 15 behind the ball. Lots of lads to come back after injury and such, and 2 weeks to go to Westmeath. You want to learn against good teams, and it was another useful run out. Maybe we weren't showing our full hand just yet. Build up now, work on these issues, and be ready for Mullingar at the end of the month. Need out of Division 3, so push on and start the campaign well.

I fully agree about the ref , Ryan O'Neill was blatantly pushed in the back near town end goals and ref beckons him up, I also think it was a good performance against a very strong Tyrone with out 5 to 6 possible starters, I thought falkner looked a bit gassed at times maybe getting over something,Mcveety very good again .

There was good parts and bad parts but that is McKenna Cup. Cavan went 20 minutes without scoring or longer. the kickouts were poor,a lot of possession lost around midfield. Players getting into good position but then retreating with ball 15 yards back. Cavan kicked 5 or 6 high ball into the forwards in the First half which were lost.

Oisin Brady was solid over the 3 games.brandon Boylan for his first year on the panel done well.Mcveety improving with each game. McVeety would be a big threat inside but maybe needed at centre back. Westmeath strolled down the centre of cavan defence in Tailtean Cup final.

Yeah that's one of them I was on about. There was one in each half, and very blatant. Can't get the ref waving get up, when a player is pushed in the back when bending over to try toe the ball up. He also called a throw ball that looked fine to me. so quite a number of bad calls in scoring positions, that could have left things closer entering in jury time. Instead we went chasing a goal and Tyrone were able to pick off a few more points to make the scoreboard look better for them than it was. But sure look, at least it was a game we're not so worried about

You are right Loughduff Lad…. The standard of inter County referees is appalling….. Wait till you see what will have to be endured in the League… Anyway the whole focus turns to the Westmeath game… a tough start but a win will set us up for a big promotion push…!

Is it just me or does anyone have an actual clue what Mickey sees in Moynagh. In every game he plays for Cavan he gives the ball away stupidly 2/3 times and offers very little. The other night against Tyrone was no different.

Sure it's an easy job with the amount of different rule changes.

Moynagh tries the impossible pass with the outside of the boot. More times than not it goes to the opposition. He tried one of those last year in Clones which was intercepted and Donegal set up a score from it. Faulkner well off the pace at the minute. Should have been replaced in 2nd half. Not too sure about Clarke in Midfield. He offers very little imo. Maybe he'd be better at full back. But overall got to try a few lads out which will stand to them. Mc Veety back is a big bonus . And we still need Martin Reilly. He's top class.

I agree the GAA have a sin to answer for by making so many silly rule changes…. It makes the referees job very difficult but most of them don't use common sense at all when making some of their decisions…

He simply slows the game down too much and after that generally end up trying a silly pass… His time is up… Graham starting him in the heat of a championship battle v Tyrone after not playing for years was criminal… his time is well past

How do we feel for Sunday lads? Not much word on players coming back in. I'm sure we'll hear later in the week if more of our front liners who missed McKenna Cup are back. We'll definitely need a fair few of those back. You'll always be missing some players at this time, and that'll be standard I suppose, but hoping some are back.

Bit of payback needed to Westmeath for July. By all accounts, they're a bit further behind where they'd like to be. They've lost a very highly rated manager, and have got in a local legend but untested in management at this level. They've had their Mexican holiday in December on the back of winning the TC, but have also lost Ger Egan. Maybe similar to us in 2021, they'll have a slight hangover getting back up to speed. Well I'm hoping so anyway. Mullingar will be a tough spot regardless. Hopefully we bring a good crowd for the short trip and get started off with a win. It'll be a tough division, but this would be a great start to get up and motoring quickly.
