Cavan Seniors 23

Draw for the McKenna Cup on the 13th. First league game away to Westmeath January 29th. A lot of teams in Division 3 with new managers. Westmeath Down, Offaly, Longford and Antrim.

There seems to be a lot of new players currently involved on the Senior panel and a few returnees,Dara McVeety and Conor Rehill.

Good opening day win for Cavan…. Great to see Martin Reilly still on board but strange to see him starting a game like this… Oisin Brady had a good day in front of goal it seems…..

Good to see a Leitrim man making his Cavan debut!

In all seriousness with McVeety and Rehill back Cavan should really be getting promotion from division three this year. Would expect Down and Longford to be the real challengers. Westmesth have a serious panel aswell so itll be no cake walk but with the players available to Cavan they should win it out.

How do folks. Happy new year all, back after a sabbatical and looking forward to another year of Cavan football.

Was at a loose end yesterday, so made the long trip up. Mostly to see McVeety back in blue, but sure what else would you be at? Anyone else make the trip to see?

Hard to know what to make of it. Spine of an experienced team down the middle with Faulkner, Holla Brady, Clarke, Gerry Smith, Kiernan, and Marty. Nice blend of squad players and debutants around this, with some more and experienced lads off the bench. Good to see Liam Brady get a start, good kickouts and got a long range free too. Nice to know we have that option here if no Galligan. Cooke did well I thought for a debut. Maguire grew into the game and played midfield well, he's a big fella. Boylan took his goal well, and Madden showed well too.

Really good to see McVeety back. Yes, it's first day out in essentially a challenge match, but he was so good. Running strongly for 50m with ball, lads couldn't get a hand to him, getting good passes away. Great to see. Holla Brady looks back to his old self. Last year was always going to be tough back from injury, so hopefully big things from him this season. Clarke ran things well middle of the field, Kiernan good, and Marty his usual self. O'Neill played well and won a lot of ball. No scores, and could have had a goal but took a few too many steps and was closed down. Oisin Brady went well and took his points well.

Antrim were poor. Kicked an unmerciful amount of wides. So we need to work on defence. There was a bit of making them have a pop from distance, but otherwise we let them turn us over and have opportunities. We got a load of goal chances, and any other day we'd have scored 5. Their keeper saved at least 4, and we hit the bar. Good to see we're making chances, as last year we didn't make many.

Can't make too much out of yesterday for the opposition and competition, but interesting to see how some lads went with so many missing, and how they shook out the legs. Wednesday will be a bigger test, to see where we are and lead us into League. Nice all the same to start the year rolling. Hopefully lots more to come

Team released for game tonight. A lot of continuity from the team that started Sunday, but with Galligan back in goals (I'd have stuck with Liam Brady for this, although maybe he has a knock as he's not on the panel tonight) and Cian Madden comes in too. Cooke, Maguire, and Tiarnan Madden continue. Gunner and GMac on the bench. Armagh go strong, so it'll be a tough ask. Good to see some of these lads get a continued run, but I would imagine there may be a few changes before throw in.

On another thread someone said Martin Reilly, Killian Brady and Raymond Galligan have retired. Obviously bull. Also suggested James Smith and Paddy Lynch may opt out.

Does anyone know if they're on the panel?

Great win tonight. Armagh came well loaded, but seems all their changes at half time unsettled them. We needed to do that job anyway, and saw it off with some good scores. Nice to see Ryan O'Neill profit off a bad kick out to hit the net. Kept well in it with some nice scores and good free taking from Galligan and Oisin Brady to keep it level at half time. Pulled away with good play 2nd half, but that was a shadow Armagh side by then, even with Rian O'Neill on for them. Did keep up with their stronger team first half anyway. Great work on us for turnovers and movement across the field. McVeety back is a joy, simply. Lots to work on including stopping being so mouthy to the officials. Many times the ball was marched forward. Good to win against a team who gave beaten us well recently, even if it is McKenna Cup. Semi v Tyrone in Breffni at 5pm this Saturday now. Hope we bring a crowd, extra game before the League will be great.

A lot of water lying on the pitch from all the rain,the game against Tyrone would do well to go ahead.
Hard to read too much into last night with the conditions.McVeety should be a big addition to the team for League and Championship.

A Air Dome like they have in Connacht would be a help in each Province.

There was an All Ireland intermediate hurling semi played in December on it. But I thought most of the underage finals in Cavan were on the 3G pitch
The pitch was relaid in 2018 ,so there must be a problem with the drainage

It was rough night for football, not getting carried away before anyone starts howling that its only the McKenna cup but here are a few positives from the game

1. Dara McVeety is back and looks sharp and hungry
2. Delighted to see Ryan O Neill bag that goal, he won plenty of dirty ball as well
3. Marty Reilly what a legend, the man is a freak, such commitment. Mark my words, he will break records yet
4. Ray Galligans 100th appearance, he scored a few lovely dead balls as well
5. New players such as Madden, Cooke, O'Neill and McGuire showing promise

In fairness you couldn't ask for more on such a night, full credit to the players and management. I could see Ricey really enjoyed that win last night, no love for the Orchard there
